This work is about the discursive representations concerning the local justice system found in the newspapers A Aurora Fluminense, published from 1827 to 1835 in Rio de Janeiro by Evaristo da Veiga, and El Lucero, published by Pedro de Angelis and distributed in the streets of Buenos Aires from 1829 to 1833. Based on a crossed-history methodological approach, a variation of relational research, this work seeks to discuss the changes that took place in the Atlantic Southwest region in connection with the growing influence of modern life during the Ibero- American Sattelzeit, i.e., the transition period between the old late-colonial regime and the new arrangements of a so-called modern life. This comparative analysis seeks to understand the changes in the administration of justice at the municipal government level associated with the development of the new national States throughout the nineteenth century. As such, this work focuses on the institutionalization of the Justice of the Peace in the Brazilian Imperial State and the Province of Buenos Aires, and draws on the political speeches published by the news press − a recent sociability of this region − to underline the progress of liberal values such as democracy and representativeness in environments marked by significant social exclusion.
