Economic integration in the EU : competitiveness and convergence

Novak, Elza January 2013 (has links)
The EU's lagging economic growth and global competitiveness require the pro- motion of technological innovation, the key determinant of long term economic growth. On the other hand, increasing disparities among EU member states require the promotion of convergence as they may threaten the EU's economic feasibility and political viability. Cohesion policy has adopted the dual role for the promotion of EU global competitiveness and EU economic cohesion; concepts incompatible by nature. The objectives of Europe 2020, specifically the promotion of technological innovation through investment in R&D, are as- sessed in terms of their compatibility with the objectives of Cohesion policy, specifically the reduction of disparities within the EU. An analysis of conver- gence in the EU determines that both beta convergence and sigma convergence are taking place, although large disparities in GDP per capita persist. An em- pirical analysis of the relative effects on GDP per capita of investment in R&D and investment in human capital determines that investment in human capital plays a significant role. Thus, key policy focus areas that meet the objectives of both Europe 2020 and Cohesion policy include investment in human capital as well as purposive diffusion of technology within the EU and the distribution of the...

Endogenní teorie optimálních měnových oblastí

Huk, Václav January 2018 (has links)
This thesis operates with the Endogenous Optimum Currency Area theory. It tests the main assumption of the endogenous theory by applying correlation and regression analysis on selected EU Member States. It compares correlation of economic cycles of selected states with the Eurozone over time along with testing significance of particular correlation factors. The results note significant synchronization of economic cycles during the economic crisis of 2008 as well as important desynchronization after 2013. As far as correlation factors are concerned statistical significance of Bilateral Trade Intensity, Intra-Industry Trade and Fiscal Differences Index on correlation of economic cycles is confirmed. However, the endogenous OCA hypothesis could not be unambiguously confirmed due to important European synchronization trend throughout the economic crisis that impacted large part of the results. Based on significant synchronization of European economies during economic crisis application of common monetary policy during this period can be recommended.

Konvergencia zemí strednej a východnej Európy

Jesenská, Denisa January 2019 (has links)
The thesis deals with the term convergence in connection with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. In the 1990s, the transition process of centrally planned economies into market economies occurred in the countries in question. The countries had been isolated for almost half a century from a market-oriented economic system. The aim of the thesis is therefore to assess to what extent there is convergence between the more advanced states of Western Europe and the post-Soviet countries. Fulfillment of the objective of the thesis will be realized by analyzing the development of economic and non-economic indicators in the countries under review and assessing their convergence rate. Another aim of the thesis is to identify the main causes of different convergence rates between countries.

Ekonomika Španělska a jeho postavení v EU / The economy of Spain and its position in the European Union

Hlávková, Eva January 2009 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to assess the economy of Spain and its position in the European Union. The European integration processes significantly influenced the development of democracy in Spain as a member state of EU. The period after Franco regime would last undoubtedly much longer and it would grow less dynamically without these processes. The influence of EU affected not only the Spanish economy, but also the current position of Spanish monarchy in Europe and in the whole world. The thesis is structured in three main parts. To be able to assess the Spanish economy during its membership in the EU, it is essential to study the procedures of negotiations between the candidate country and the Community. That is the reason why the first part is engaged in the pre-entry phase. The second part examines in detail the development of the economy after the reintroduction of democracy in the country. It deals mainly with the macroeconomic tendencies, their causes together with consequences. The progress concerns the economic situation in Spain before the entry to the Community, in the second half of eighties, as well as during the nineties. The thesis does not forget to be engaged in the current situation in the new millennium and it also outlines the possible development in the following years. The last part is devoted to the position and the influence of Spain on the main integration directions in the European Union. The coherence and the extent of evaluation can be considered one of the benefits of this work. The thesis introduces the complex view of the Spanish economy since the entry to the EU. It also deals with possible following tendencies. The understanding of the development is facilitated by a large number of graphs and tables, which help to outline the essence of the topic.
