Reliability Associated with the Estimation of Soil Resilient Modulus at Different Hierarchical Levels of Pavement Design

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: Deterministic solutions are available to estimate the resilient modulus of unbound materials, which are difficult to interpret because they do not incorporate the variability associated with the inherent soil heterogeneity and that associated with environmental conditions. This thesis presents the stochastic evaluation of the Enhanced Integrated Climatic Model (EICM), which is a model used in the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide to estimate the soil long-term equilibrium resilient modulus. The stochastic evaluation is accomplished by taking the deterministic equations in the EICM and applying stochastic procedures to obtain a mean and variance associated with the final design parameter, the resilient modulus at equilibrium condition. In addition to the stochastic evaluation, different statistical analyses were applied to determine that the uses of hierarchical levels are valid in the unbound pavement material design and the climatic region has an impact on the final design resilient moduli at equilibrium. After determining that the climatic regions and the hierarchical levels are valid, reliability was applied to the resilient moduli at equilibrium. Finally, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) design concept based on the Structural Number (SN) was applied in order to illustrate the true implications the hierarchical levels of design and the variability associated with environmental effects and soil properties have in the design of pavement structures. The stochastic solutions developed as part of this thesis work together with the SN design concept were applied to five soils with different resilient moduli at optimum compaction condition in order to evaluate the variability associated with the resilient moduli at equilibrium condition. These soils were evaluated in five different climatic regions ranging from arid to extremely wet conditions. The analysis showed that by using the most accurate input parameters obtained from laboratory testing (hierarchical Level 1) instead of Level 3 analysis could potentially save the State Department of Transportation up to 10.12 inches of asphalt in arid and semi-arid regions. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Geospatial analysis of risk components for elevated blood lead levels in Kansas: geologic and anthropogenic factors

Galinskaya, Karina January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Geology / Saugata Datta / Children are the demographic most susceptible to and affected by lead poisoning. Lead contamination in soil has been recorded as being primarily from lead-based paint, historic leaded gasoline emissions, and from lead point-source emitters. The highest risk of elevated blood lead level (BLL) is correlated with living in an area dominated by pre-1950’s housing. From 1976 to 1994, midst the phasing out and removal of lead from gasoline, the blood lead levels of children in the United States decreased from 16 µg/dL to 3.2 µg/dL. There is evidence showing the irreversible effects of intellectual impairment still occur at levels of BLL below 10 µg/dL. In Kansas, Barton and Ellis counties residential soils were sampled, and chemical composition was examined with a handheld XRF and an HR ICP-MS. Particle size and pH were recorded for all samples. The presence or lack of of lead sulfate and lead carbonate was identified using XRD. Chemical tests revealed elevated Zn and As with increasing Pb concentrations. There was weak evidence of lead sulfate in one of eight tested samples. Barton county has courser sediments and the top five highest Pb concentrations recorded in this study. There is a significant correlation with Pb concentrations and age of housing for houses built prior to1950. Pb Isotopic analysis on eight samples showed multi-source contamination in the soil. We believe the source of most of the lead is from ambient lead mixed with historic leaded gasoline deposits and possible output from factories/coal, along with leaded paint in older homes. Three of the eight samples had paint chips which tested positive for lead. Maps were created showing central Kansas having elevated blood lead levels in children and overlays were made illustrating oil well density in counties. Five variables were used to create a risk assessment map for Kansas: housing age, poverty levels, blood lead levels, number of oil wells, and population.

Avaliação do nível sérico de IL-6 e IL-13 antes e após o tratamento do linfoma de Hodgkin clássico /

Gaiolla, Rafael Dezen. January 2008 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) is a malignant lymphoid neoplasia characterized by abnormal immune response. Part of this disturbance is attributable to the activity of cytokines produced by the malignant Hodgkin/Reed-Sternbergh cells and reactive inflammatory cells. IL-6, IL-10 and IL-13 seem to play an important role in the pathogenesis of HL. Although some features of the disease have been associated with the production of these interleukins, there is insufficient data about changes in its serum levels at diagnosis and after the treatment, as well as its potencial use as biomarkers of HL course. Design and Methods. Serum levels pre and post treatment of IL-6, IL-10 and IL-13 in 28 patients with HL were determined by ELISA. Results were evaluated against clinical and laboratory parameters, as well as response to treatment and presence of infection by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), assessed by in situ hybridization with biotinylated probe directed to the viral transcript EBER-1. Serum samples from 26 healthy blood-donors volunteers were evaluated as a control group. Results. IL-6 and IL-10 serum levels before treatment of HL were significantly higher in patients compared to healthy individuals (p<0,001), and a significant reduction after treatment of the disease was observed (p<0,001). Serum levels of IL-13 were indetectable both in patients (before and after treatment) and controls. Serum levels of IL-6 before treatment were higher in patients with abdominal involvement by HL (p=0,03), hepatomegaly (p=0,04), B-symptoms (p=0,01), and anemia (p=0,02). On the other hand, IL-10 pre-treatment levels were higher in patients with hypoalbuminemia (p=0,04) and hepatomegaly (p=0,01). Multivariate analysis Abstract 54 revealed that lymphocytopenia and B-symptoms were good predictors of IL-6 levels in serum before treatment of patients...
