Druhá liturgie Církve československé husitské / The Second Liturgy of Czechoslovak Hussite Church

Presented work has in its first part tried to evaluate both textual and theological development of the liturgy in the Czechoslovak (Hussite) church. It has focused on Farsky's translation of the Roman Mass from 1919, first liturgical reforms of the young church, liturgical diversification and unifiction in newly conceived liturgy by Karel Farsky in 1923. The work further follows development of such liturgy, especially its revision in 1939 and attempts of liturgical renewal in seventies and eighties of the twentieth century. The final conclusion of the thesis resides in stating that revision was crucial for blurring certain parts of Farsky's liturgy. It was not conciliated with Učení, official doctrinal document of the Church, and also didn't stay in line with its origin. The main part of the work is focused on analysis of singular parts of Second Liturgy s it was adopted by Assembly in 1991. We attempt to compare this liturgy with earlier versions as mentioned above. This thesis particularly states, that recent version of the Second Liturgy presents two parts of the liturgy of the Word,when the first reading is sharply distinguished from the rest. The diploma thesis consists of three parts. The first one describes the historical role of psalms during masses from their origin until presence. It illuminates the new role of psalms in the Cathlolic liturgy after the second Vatican council and outlines how these liturgical changes projected into Czech Catholic enviroments. The second part introduces significant Czech psalters and their authors. The psalters were created for liturgical needs and in reaction to the conclusions of the 2VC for liturgical needs. The third, main part of the thesis consists of detailed analysis of 1992 Karel Sklenička's psalter Responsoriální žalmy pro neděle a významné dny liturgického roku. The analysis of harmonic and melodic procedures of individual tones serves as a basis for the practival part of the thesis which is an extension of existing Sklenička's psalter to all days of liturgical year. The new psalter preserves the music component composed by Karel Sklenička and also preserves the way of work with the liturgical text in new psalms following the pattern of Karel Sklenička. The new psalter keeps strictly to the liturgically prescribed texts for individual liturgical occasions like the psalter from 1992.

The dissertation concerns the use of modern music during liturgy. The first chapter is devoted to a music mentioned in the Bible. Church documents about the music in liturgy are investigated in the second and third chapter. Fourth chapter describes musical instruments and their use. Fifth chapter brings knowledge about modern scared music in Czech countries from beginning till today. Sixth chapter describes particular genres of modern sacred music. The specification of genres begins with spirituals and gospel music. These songs are traditional sacred music from Africa and America. The chapter continues with church jazz and rock. These genres originate from traditional sacred music. The next is church folk and songs from Taizé. Sixth chapter ends with music with electronic instruments. Seventh chapter describes hymn-books from totalitarianism till the present. The dissertation closes with eighth chapter with the tittle Prognosis in the future which is about modern sacred music in future.

Dr. Josef Hronek as the Cathechetist and the Pedagogue The thesis presents the biography and the work of Josef Hronek (1890-1954) in the field of catechetics and pedagogy. The work is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is devoted to the biography of Josef Hronek, introducing primarily his academic career. The second chapter presents an overview of Hronek`s written works, his monographies and other books and articles in professional journals. Publications are divided into five groups, they are chronologically arranged, and each provides basic data about the publication and its purpose. The third chapter introduces the context in which Josef Hronek worked. The fourth chapter contains thematic analysis of the works dealing with catechetics and pedagogy, particular attention is devoted to the presentation of biblical teaching and liturgical education in his work. It also involves the evaluation of professional work of Josef Hronek, according to the period in which particular pieces arised, and comparison with his predecessors and contemporaries. These evaluations are summarized, in order to express the contribution of Josef Hronek to Czech catechetics and pedagogy.

Missa chrismatis and Its Changes in the Twentieth Century: A Comparison of Changes in Liturgy and Theology. Missa Chrismatis (Chrism Mass) is a Mass that the bishop celebrates in the Holy Week, together with his priests, which is a sign of mutual unity. During this Mass, the priests renew their priestly vows and the bishop consecrates the oil of catechumens, the oil of the sick and the chrism oil. The ceremony underwent several changes over the past century. These are reflected also in the theology, expressed in the liturgy by emphasizing of certain elements. The major reforms of the liturgy of the Mass took place in several stages in the 50`s, 60`s and 70`s of the 20th century. First, the thesis follows the basics and reasons for the use of oils in the liturgy of the Catholic Church in the context of Easter and then the historical development of the Mass, in which the oils are consecrated. Also it clearly compares the progress of the Missa chrismatis liturgy and captures differences in the liturgical texts and texts of the rite of benediction of oils in the various phases of the reform of the twentieth century. This thesis discusses the history of music in the city of Frenstat pod Radhostem at the turn of the 18th and 19th century, especially regarding the pastoral compositions made by local composers. It presents their life and work and also presents a complex historical contexts. An educational material was developed as a part of this thesis, it could be used in education, as well as in leisure time sector. These materials also include sheet music for potential practical use. Moreover, an analysis, transcription and digitization of selected works are also introduced in this thesis.

This thesis deals with relationship of music and theology. It stems from history of development of the philosophic judgement on the notion of ?musica? in antiquity as well as from the contemporary conceptions and definitions of music. Subsequently it proceeds to the presentation of selected writings of both historical and contemporary theologists? dealing with the subject of the art of music. Based on their analysis this thesis comes to the conclusion that a relationship between theology and music indeed exists and their dialog mutually enriches both of these disciplines. Music transcends the limited capabilities of speech and with its own instruments it speaks about the infinite God. This central thought at which the thesis arrives, is concretely documented in musical activities and pieces of work by selected composers of classical music.

The Abstract The Hymn and its Tradition in Late Medieval Bohemia Veronika Mráčková, Charles University, Prague The present thesis concerns the monophonic and polyphonic office hymns preserved in late medieval Bohemian sources. The author is mainly focused on the repertoire of the hymns written in Strahov Codex from around 1467. This manuscript of uncertain provenance contains an enormous collection of three- and four- voice polyphonic hymns which show plenty of the local characteristics. These domestic traits may be identified not only through texts devoted to indigenous Saints, but also through the melodies which form the cantus firmus in the upper voice of the hymns. The identification of these monophonic tunes in other plainchant sources could help us to determine the origin of Strahov Codex. Additionally, it is clear that this mensural manuscript contains not only music of a high artistic standard, but also a number of less polished compositions, and that it is thus an important witness to the existence of a wide range of daily musical activities in late medieval Bohemia. A crucial part of this dissertation is a critical edition of the monophonic hymn tunes preserved in Roudnice Psalter, as well as an edition of the selected polyphonic hymns written in Strahov Codex.

Parish clergy and religious change in Prague's diocese from Council of Trent till the end of the 17th century The religious change that happens in Bohemia in the 17th century has no equivalent in the Europe at this time: the whole country, where Catholics were in a very minority, comes back to the roman Church. This evolution is here seen from a very prosaic point of view: how lay people live this change, and so how acts the parish clergy in this matter. Conversion's strategy, at the end of the Council of Trent, was to permit the use of the chalice to the laity. The consequence of this permission was a very hazy situation in the parishes, but Holy See did nothing before the battle of White Mountain, and after the battle, he suppressed chalice, mainly for pastoral reasons. During the Thirty years War, the kingdom is the place of a general reform, which has its origins in the catholic missionary movement of the beginning of the century and in the political theories of this time. Bohemia is strongly marked by the war that acts as a catalyst; at the same time political and religious authorities were lacking. Music Culture of the Elisabethan Convent in Prague Jakub Michl Abstract The Sisters of Saint Elizabeth (Elizabethan Nuns) were a spiritual order primarily focused on administering healthcare. Therefore, music was never the main focus of the order's activities, as it often was in others, particularly educational orders. However, thanks to the uninterrupted historical continuity of the Prague convent, which was exempted from the restrictions of Joseph II's era, many sources illustrating the convent music culture were preserved, including an extensive collection of music. The dissertation aims to describe this music culture in the context of the order structure and its personal hierarchy, as part of the city of Prague and its civic institutions, and in its everyday life and characteristics such as enclosure, hospital service and recreational activities. Music in convents was always tightly bound to liturgy. In the case of the Elizabethan order, significant music production was focused on the order's main liturgical feasts such as S. Elizabeth, S. Francis of Assisi, Porciuncula, Christmas, Epiphany, Easter and also memorial services for deceased patrons of the convent. The convent cooperated with many lay musicians and composers such as F. X.
