The main goal of the thesis is to answer whether an ability to use maps in different ways is affected by one or more criteria specified by the author. The author has decided to test abilities of fifteen-year-old pupils to work in different ways with actual and old maps. The thesis examines possible impact of type of the school, gender, school marks achieved in History and Geography lessons, and previous experience with using maps. Before the practical part of the thesis was executed the theoretical part of the thesis had been dealt with. Different map skills were specified and characterized. Maps which the author had chosen to use for the purpose of the thesis were thoroughly described and particular odds of work with old maps were emphasised. For the purpose of the research part of the thesis the author developed a didactic test. At pilot testing a sample of 34 pupils completed the test to verify it is suitable for the thesis purpose and it meets all requirements for scientific research. At the second stage of the practical part of the research a group of 125 pupils from two different types of school completed the test. The doctoral thesis is focused on the purpose use of existing symbol sets of national map series to create a new harmonized set and to effective use of existing symbols of large scale maps. The theoretical part deals with the development of the theoretical concept of cartographic language, possibilities of cartographic interpretation and procedures for creating symbol sets. This part also provides an overview of national and international organizations and a summary of legislation, which are related to cartographic production and which seek to facilitate sharing and transfering of data among states. Furthermore, this thesis evaluates the current possibilities of purpose use of symbol sets with emphasis on converging cartographic outputs within the Czech Republic and the European Union. The main aim of the thesis is to design a new symbol key, which will be used by the Land Survey Office to distribute a new edition of national map series. The development of new symbols follows the comparison of cartographic interpretation on maps published by national organizations in the Czech Republic and selected countries of the European Union. Simultaneously the whole national map series is undergoing fundamental innovations. This is also described in the thesis. This part of the thesis was created in closed cooperation with the Land Survey Office in Prague and with the support of the Military Geographical and Hydrometeorological Office of General Josef Churavý in Dobruška. The comprehensive symbol set of the new Base Topographic Maps of the Czech Republic at a scale of 1:5 000, 1:10 000, 1:25 000, 1:50 000, 1:100 000 and 1:250 000 is the main result of this thesis. There is designed solution for more effective use of existing symbols in the form of a purpose-built database of symbols for the creation of large scale maps in conclusion of this thesis.

This master's thesis with draft of GIS tool for mobile platforms. The resulting program will be adapted for collection of geographic data in the field. The program will work with standard file formats for GIS. High emphasis is put on the control, which is particular for mobile devices with capacitive display. The program will be designed for both smartphone and tablet. Explanation of the mapping principle and description of geographic information systems are also parts of the thesis.

The work deals with recording and tracking of the objects in a certain area. It also puts mind to web services, mapping applications and modern standards, which seeks to compare and choose the best for this project. Then explore the existing systems and discusses their pros and cons, which specifies the requirements and propose solutions to information system built of selected technologies in order to create a friendly user interface. The proposed solution implements using modern PHP frameworks based on the MVP design pattern, and finally deals with verification of functionality and outline future developments.

Presented diploma thesis describes the process of map skills development in educational reality. The key element of the thesis composes of teaching reality examination, which has not been explored in connection to map skills before. The reality examination allows us to document current situation in map skills development and to implement possible changes into the process. The main aim of this thesis is to describe various teaching approaches to map skill development in practical use, all documented by video recording which is the main method used for this thesis. Theoretical part defines the term of map skills and their descriptions as well as the personal approach to teaching and its impact on the educational process. Development cartographic means of expression for representing castles on old maps of the Bohemia Abstract This thesis examines the development of cartographic means of expression that are used for the display of castles, palaces, strongholds and ruins on the old maps of Bohemia in the period from the early 16th century to early 18th century. The work evaluates the positional inaccuracies of location of interest sites through cartometric analysis. The first part is theoretical, in which the issues outlined cartographic semiotics and cartographic expression. Next two parts deal with the oldest cartographic references of the Bohemia, or the description of the analyzed maps. Further, the thesis illustrated the method by which the analysis are extracted. The main topic of this thesis are map skills, and the key point of interest are strategies used for map analysis. General reference map was found as a suitable map given its frequent use in the school atlases. The main goal of this study is evaluation of the general reference map analysis strategies in terms of their dimensions, i. e. their repertoire, distribution, efficiency, and adaptability. 20 upper secondary school students participated in an eye-tracking experiment that consisted of the test and the follow-up questionnaire. The eye-tracking data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively to obtain information about the strategy dimensions. Results showed that students used broad repertoire of strategies when analyzing the general reference map and they pointed to the most chosen strategies as well. In some cases, students used more than one strategy to solve the task and thus the most frequent strategy combinations were detected. The efficiency of strategies was evaluated based on the students' success rate and the length of the solving cycle which was affected by the type of elements, respectively map content, used for solving the task. It is necessary to prefer or to suppress some aspects of the preventive evaluation during the landscape character evaluation process on district, regional, microregional or local levels. Thus the modification of the methods of the landscape character evaluation is made in different scales of the problematic and also in different types of the nature. These modifications come out of different aims and different ways of the preventive landscape character evaluation use. The evaluation outcomes, the form of protecting precautions, are different for a different ways of nature structuring and they lead to the specific needs in decision making in practice. These specifics and case modifications can be divided, described and documented according the knowledge based on many of my own evaluation works.

This diploma work is concerned in evaluation of map bases, superposition of different quality maps and preparation of basic materials for the project of land adjustment. The main attention was given to cadastral maps of Land Registr of Czech Republic.
