Inhabiting the ruin

Hart, Juliette Mary 25 November 2011 (has links)
This dissertation addresses the loss of definition of public spaces within the urban enviroments due, in large part, to increased privatisation. Using the Baixa of the city of Maputo, Mozambique as its laboratory, the alienated amd abandoned spaces within the urban fabric which result in these voids will be explored. Critical theory relating to the manner in which we appropriate and define sapces within our urban enviroment will be explored as this dissertation seeks to establish a connection between the architectural realm and its surrounding public landscape. An architecture which explores the reconnection of place to space will be saught through the investigation f the series of thresholds that occur between the two. Specifically, this exploration will be through the lens of the adaptive re-use of a historically significant landmark within the urban core and its ability to be re-integrated into a contemporary urban landscape. / Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Architecture / unrestricted

Threshold between land and sea : new waterborne transport node for the City of Maputo

Deacon, Catherine D. 25 November 2011 (has links)
The chosen project stems from the broader context of Maputo as waterfront city. Increased industrial privatisation of the harbour strip adjacent to the city’s historic Baixa district led to the relocation of public functions, away from the downtown water’s edge and so disconnecting city life from the water. The potential of the city reconnecting to the water is thus latent. The dissertation responds to this potential by reintroducing a public program to the waterfront site. The building integrates with a greater urban vision for the precinct, whereby the industrial waterfront strip is reprogrammed with a layer of mixed use functions. A water-borne public transport node is the architectural typology to be explored. The architectural study aims to investigate the consolidation of currently fragmented water transport modes in one facility and so promote integration between different users and the public. Exploration also includes investigation of dualities and contrasts. Interaction between formal and informal trade, water and land transport, and international trends versus local influences are explored. The projected growth of the city further necessitates the expansion and improvement of water transport infrastructure. The proposed interchange connects all public water -borne modes of transport in Maputo, additionally establishing the link between the city and the water, and subsequently the downtown area with satellite suburbs around Maputo Bay. The design acknowledges the historic nature of the site and context, and adds an additional layer whilst responding to the richness of the existing in an environmentally sensitive manner. The social context of Maputo as a capital city in a developing country is another important consideration. The informal, public, transient nature of the context informs the design, juxtaposed against a first world, international business and tourism centre. The facility will aid in the reintegration of the waterfront with the city, effectively connecting it to other modes of transport. / Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Architecture / unrestricted

This study aims to examine aspects of the urbanization of the city of Maputo in Mozambique from the 1970#s with the emphasis on the production and housing situation of people of low social status incomes located in the periphery (suburbs). For this study, the chosen districts were Polana Caniço "A" and "B", which, in their proper proportions, reveal changes recorded in Mozambican society marked by moments of unrest, continuities and discontinuities. The world (politically and economically globalized) immersed in the struggles of the Cold War was influenced, directly or indirectly, by the fact that local social and spatial dynamics manifested in the structure of the Nation-State and the sociopolitical crisis that accompanied it. In the mid-1970s with the collapse of the colonial system and the establishment of the Popular Republic of Mozambique, the socialist state, supported by the mass of social organizations, became the chief agent of national socio-territorial dynamics. These events led to the occurrence of other processes in the urban space of Maputo city which manifested in the expansion of the peripheries and the concentration of a largely impoverished population in these areas. In the mid-1980s the process began of the political and economical opening and restructuring that led to the beginning of neoliberal capitalism promoted by international organizations, particularly the Bretton Woods institutions. The opening of the domestic market has allowed the emergence of other factors that also began to intervene in the local dynamics through actions that have outlined the organization of the socio- special process in Maputo. Encouraged by the state, economic participants involved in the reproduction of geographical space, invested in various socioeconomic activities including real estate and housing. Looking to meet their economic interests, these agents produced mechanisms which intervened decisively in the local socio-spatial dynamic. Although prevailing in this predominant logic, there remains a segment of society on the fringes of the hegemonic economic relations that participates in the reproduction of the urban space by promoting practices that ensure their survival in that global socioeconomic structure. Consequently, the interactions between the agents of "hegemonic rationality" and the "counter-rationality" (Santos, 2009: 309) reproduce the urban space in Maputo, deploying multiple geographic objects that shelter several practices and a variety of social classes.
