________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The use of rootstock resistant to soil diseases have been a short term control alternative, where several wild species of passion fruit have been showing a good potential. The objective of this study is to assess, under greenhouse conditions, the development of two hybrids (P. edulis x P. setacea and P. coccinea x P. setacea) and four species of passion fruit (P. setacea, P. coccinea, P. amethystina and P. edulis) as rootstock for the sour passion fruit, aiming the resistance to the major soil diseases that attack the crop. The viability of the passion fruit asexual propagation through the rooting of herbaceous cuttings using five concentrations of IBA (indolbutyric acid) was studied in Chapter 01. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with 5 repetitions and 30 treatments in a factorial arrangement 6 x 5 (six species and five hormone levels) and 6 useful cuttings per experimental unit. It was observed that P. amethystina stood out among the other species showing excellent percentage of rooting and, as the doses of IBA were increased, the levels of rooting and sprouting of the cuttings also increased. The Chapter 02 was conducted with the objective of evaluating the grafting of the commercial sour passion fruit on herbaceous cuttings. Two experiments were performed: experiment I with bench grafting and experiment II with grafting on rooted cuttings, both made with lateral grafting. In experiment I, the experimental design was in randomized blocks with 5 repetitions, 6 species studied, and given that the experimental sample had 6 useful cuttings. It was assessed the percentage of graft catching, survival and mortality of cuttings with evaluations at 30 days, 60 days and 30 days after transplanting. In experiment II the design was the same as before, however, with 5 species studied. The cuttings have been planted for rooting 60 days before grafting. The assessments were made 30 and 60 days after grafting and there was no transplanting. In experiment I the species P.amethystina proved to be viable due to the fast development of grafted seedlings, achieving 90% of graft catching. The P. setacea species showed higher mortality rates before and after transplanting. In experiment II there weren’t significant differences between species in of the variables examined. Comparing the two methods of grafting and, based on results, it is possible to say that the bench grafting technique, under the conditions which the work was conducted, proved to be viable, with good percentages of survival
