Madame James McGill (1747-1818) : Marie-Charlotte Guillimin, ou, La vie d'une femme mondaine à Montréal au dix-huitième siècle / Marie-Charlotte Guillimin

Tanguay, Lynda January 1993 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to reveal the life of Marie-Charlotte Guillimin, the wife of James McGill, the founder of the University that bears his name. Marie-Charlotte Guillimin life spans the XVIIIth century and takes place in the cities of Quebec and Montreal. She was also the wife of Joseph-Amable Trottier DesRivieres, a Montreal merchant, in a first marriage. / The education that she received at the Ursulines convent in Quebec city, her two marriage contracts as well as various other legal documents all tend to demonstrate that Marie-Charlotte Guillimin's lifestyle was other than the traditional one of wife and mother that we usually attribute to the women of her era. / Using Marie-Charlotte's life as an example, this thesis will attempt to show that the women of her social class and status probably contributed much more to Montreal's early economic growth than we have usually given them credit for.

The distribution of rainfall with rate at McGill Observatory.

Weiss, Marianne. January 1964 (has links)
Distributions of amount of rain with rainfall rate and of duration with rate are determined for all rain of 1963 and for the heavy rain of 1958 to 1962. The rainfall rates are obtained from the rain chart records of the McGill Cbservatory tipping-bucket recording rain gauge. Separate distributions for winter and summer rain are evaluated. The distributions of amount with rate for both winter and summer rain are log-normal; they have logarithmic means of 2.5 mm hr⁻¹ and 12.6 mm hr⁻¹ respectively and logarithmic standard deviations of 0.4 and 0.7 respectively. A comparison of the distributions of amount with rate for winter rain and for snow shows that the two distributions are similar in form. [...]

McGill Institute for Learning in Retirement : a case study of change in a volunteer-led organization

Rafman, Carolynn. January 1997 (has links)
The case study examines the process of change undergone by the McGill Institute for Learning in Retirement (McGill ILR), a volunteered organization. ILRs have emerged across North America in the past 15 years and their success is attributed to the congenial participatory learning environment and the fact that members volunteer to administer the program activities in collaboration with a host university. / Four years after it was founded, leaders sensed the need to evaluate McGill ILR's strengths and weaknesses. Under the aegis of McGill Centre for Continuing Education, a Planning Committee designed and implemented an organizational self-assessment to provide recommendations for change and ensure sustainability. / The study revealed: (a) that this community of older adults taught themselves how to respond to change effectively and (b) that the overarching characteristics of an ILR, together with a spirit of dialogue, provided an organizational structure which helped volunteers absorb change.
