A case study of the relationship between journalism and politics in Sri Lanka

Westerberg, Isabella January 2012 (has links)
This bachelor thesis is conducted as a Minor Field Study (MFS) in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The aim of the study is to investigate the relationship between journalism and politics from three questions at issue: 1) What is the role of media according to the journalists? 2) How do journalists work with political reporting in the Sri Lankan print media? 3) How does print media and politics correspond to each other in Sri Lanka?. The theoretical framework consists of theories onmedia systems, democracy models, the notion of the public sphere, media during elections and types of regulations. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 informants, both editors and journalists, at eight different editorial offices. The newspapers at which the informants were employed were either state-owned or privately owned. The qualitative material was transcribed and analysed using thematisation and meaning concentration to reveal patterns, attitudes and opinions. The analysis is divided into two major sections; 'Media's Role in the Society' and 'Media and Politics'. The first section investigates the first question at issue. Informing and educating people are valued as important responsibilities amongst the informants. Media is considered to be powerful in terms of affecting both people and politicians, although, some reservations are made. The second section examines the second and third questions at issue. The ideal execution of political reportage includes notions of neutrality, fairness, balance and unbiased reporting. In reality this is not necessarily accomplished. The state newspapers seem to report on behalf of the government in a positive and uncritical way. Private newspapers consider themselves to be more independent, but political ties and restrictions can disable their independence. Tendencies towards clientelism, political parallelism and instrumentalization are noted in the media environment. Sensitive, political news is often self-censored by journalists due to fear of consequences. In 'Conclusions and Discussion' the questions at issue are connected to each other in an attempt to discuss the complex relationship between journalism and politics in Sri Lanka.

"Visit My Mosque": Exploring Religious Activism to Help Tackle Islamophobia and Negative Perceptions of Muslims in Britain

Susilo, Moh January 2020 (has links)
Islamophobia and misconceptions or negative portrayal of Muslims have led Muslims in Western societies being discriminated by people who hold religious and racial prejudice. Against this backdrop, Muslim communities in Britain run a national campaign called “Visit My Mosque”. This thesis explores whether the campaign follows the three variables of social movements: political opportunities, mobilising structures, and framing processes to take shape and emerge. Close examination to data, collected from interviews with four Muslim activists, reveals themes which point to the variables. The regional political context in Europe following the terrorists attack at the office of Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris triggers activists in Britain to launch the “Visit My Mosque” campaign. The political climate provides an opportunity for Muslims to take collective action. The pressure on Muslim communities, as a result of Islamophobia and negative portrayal of Muslims by some sections of the media, provides narratives to transform grievances into action. And finally, the campaign emerges due to the presence of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) which facilitates the campaign and provides support to networks of participating mosques. These findings may offer more understanding into the study of social movements in general and religious activism in particular.

Andersson, Ida, Andersson, Ellen January 2022 (has links)
The society use media more and more today compared to the past and the news audience is daily fed by information from different newspapers. Elderly care is a current topic in Swedish newspapers, both in terms of financing, staff issues and an aging society with increased need for care and nursing. The purpose of the study is to examine how media present two selected problem areas, staff shortages and lack of linguistics, in elderly care and how this presentation can influence the news audience’s attitude to elderly care. With a qualitative content analysis, a total of 19 newspaper articles from Aftonbladet and Expressen have been analysed to answer the study’s purpose. The analysis shows that media has a negative presentation about elderly care, and it has been possible to distinguish four different presentations about each problem area from the newspapers. The analysis also shows that the negative coverage of elderly care affects the news audience’s opinions and attitude towards elderly care. The poor working conditions of the staff at their workplace has been dominant through the newspaper articles, connected to low wages and low status. The study also explains the importance of how media chooses to present different topics, through appealing headlines and only certain aspects of a topic is highlighted. The aging population is an existing and a future challenge in elderly care and media’s presentation about elderly care can affect assistant nurses and social worker’s choice of career. For that reason, can medias negative presentations about elderly care contribute to an increased staff shortage, which will be problematic when the country is facing an aging society and the need of assistant nurses and social workers are expected to increase.
