The use of chemostratigraphy and geochemical vectoring as an exploration tool for platinum group metals in the Platreef, Bushveld Igneous Complex, South Africa: a case study on the sandsloot & overysel farmsMwenze, Tshipeng January 2014 (has links)
>Magister Scientiae - MSc / The paucity of geochemical criteria for stratigraphic correlations and defining the styles of mineralisation pose serious problems in locating PGE-rich zones in the Platreef. This study is therefore aimed at identifying and appraising process-based mineralogical/geochemical criteria which may be useful in stratigraphic correlations and characterizing the nature and styles of PGE mineralisation. In addition, the work investigated the possible use of geochemical vectoring as a tool to locate the PGE-rich zones. Boreholes OY 482 and SS 330, drilled at the Overysel and Sandsloot farms respectively, were logged, and a total of 119 quarter cores were sampled for petrographic studies. The elemental contents in the rocks were determined by XRF and ICP-OES analyses and were evaluated using various statistical and mass balance techniques. In borehole OY 482, where the floor rock is Archaean granite, the Platreef consists of three feldspathic pyroxenite sills referred to as Lower, Middle and Upper Platreef units, from the bottom to the top, respectively. The results show that the Lower and Upper Platreef units have higher median values of Mg# (0.58 and 0.57) and Ni/Cu (0.68 and 0.75) when compared to the Middle Platreef (Mg#: 0.54 and Ni/Cu: 0.67) which may not be totally suggestive of two magmatic intrusive pulses. In borehole SS 330, where the floor rock is dolomite, the rocks consist of clinopyroxenites and olivine clinopyroxenites (variably serpentinised). These two units are intercalated with each other and are products resulting from the injection of Platreef magma sills within the dolomite floor rock. The hierarchical clustering and mass balance calculations show that when compared to the Platreef feldspathic pyroxenites, which have higher SiO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3 median contents, the clinopyroxenites possess higher CaO median content whereas the olivine clinopyroxenites have higher MgO and LOI median contents. The PGE-rich zones (i.e. Pt+Pd) in clinopyroxenites are marked by low Ca/Mg median values, whereas in both, the olivine clinopyroxenites and the Platreef units, these zones are marked by high Mg/Fe median values. The suggested base metal index [(Cu/Zn) x (Ni/Co)] used to vector towards PGE-rich zones, which reflects the presence of the base metal sulphides (BMS), correlates with the Pt+Pd in the BMS-rich zones. This is not always the case in zones of low BMS contents which may reflect changes in the mineralogy of the BMS. In conclusion, the two boreholes studied show contrasting petrographic and geochemical attributes. This dissimilarity is mainly due to the fact that borehole OY 482 comprises Platreef magmatic rocks whereas borehole SS 330 intersected metamorphic/ metasomatic rocks.

Stratigraphy and Geochemistry of the Palaeoproterozoic Dannemora inlier, north-eastern Bergslagen region, central Sweden.Dahlin, Peter January 2014 (has links)
The Palaeoproterozoic Dannemora inlier is situated in the north-eastern Bergslagen region. The inlier consists of primary and reworked volcanic deposits, stromatolitic limestone and skarn that have been subjected to upper greenschist facies metamorphism. Thicknesses of the different volcanic deposits indicate deposition within a caldera, where syn-volcanic alkali alteration was strong. The deposition was submarine and below wave base in the eastern part of the inlier, but above wave base in the central part where erosion channels together with cross-bedding occurs frequently. The Dannemora Formation is the volcanosedimentary succession of the inlier. Two borehole profiles, a northern and a southern, cover the whole Formation and show different alteration patterns. A strong depletion of Na2O and enrichment of K2O dominate in the southern profile, whereas this pattern is not as evident in the northern profile. The uppermost section of the totally eight constituting the Formation, is intercalated with ore-bearing dolomitic limestone and skarn, and has experienced at least two episodes of alteration. An anticline has been established lithogeochemically from immobile element ratios and the reoccurrence of an accretionary lapilli bed. Numerous altered sub-alkaline, calc-alkaline and basaltic dykes have been recorded in the Dannemora inlier. They are the result of mixing and fractionation of at least three magmatic sources and carry a mixed signature of subduction zone and within-plate volcanic tectonic setting. A seismic profile across the Dannemora inlier images a strong reflector package that dips c. 50° E to the east of the inlier. This package coincides with the polyphase, E-up reverse, brittle-ductile Österbybruk deformation zone (ÖDZ). Yet another steep reflector in the Dannemora ore-field extends to a depth of more than two kilometres. This reflector might represent either a deep-seated iron deposit or a fluid-bearing fault zone.

The Nature of Anorthosite - Country Rock Interaction During Granulite Facies Metamorphism: An Example From the Whitestone AnorthositeThompson, Danny Lee 06 1900 (has links)
<p> The Whitestone Anorthosite is a relatively small anorthosite body (160 km2 ) located within the Parry Sound structural domain, Western Grenville Province, Ontario. Both the anorthosite and the surrounding gneisses have been affected by a granulite grade metamorphic event which predates the Grenville Orogeny. The outer margin of the anorthosite body has been strongly deformed and recrystallized and is characterized by a pervasive metasomatic alteration consisting of garnet, scapolite, hornblende, apatite, biotite, sphene, carbonate and opaques. The country rock gneisses exhibit a corresponding discontinuous, and highly variable, reaction aureole. Pre-existing mafic gneisses are particularily affected, being characterized by the breakdown of orthopyroxene and hornblende, an increase in garnet, clinopyroxene, apatite and opaques, and enrichment in Fe, Ti and P. </p> <p> The metasomatic alteration exhibited by the Whitestone Anorthosite is thought to be due to a combination of two processes: 1. Mechanical mixing at the anorthosite/country rock contact during intense deformation (tectonic assimilation), and 2. Widespread absorption of mobile components (predominantly volatiles) from both included material and the surrounding gneisses. </p> <p>The formation of the country rock reaction aureole is a continuous solid state metamorphic process, whereby mobile components are preferentially leached from the rock leaving a mafic restite. Post-deformation cooling of the anorthosite, combined with an increased volatile flux, has imparted a polygonal mosaic texture suggestive of contact metamorphism. The typical garnet-clinopyroxene assemblage exhibited by mafic gneisses within the reaction aureole, is a consequence of the increased Fe/Mg ratio which stabilizes this assemblage at lower P, T conditions. The temperature of final equilibration and recrystallization is estimated to be 750 ± 70 °C, based on clinopyroxene-garnet geotherrnometry. </p> <p> A similar metasomatic interaction, to the one outlined in this thesis, is to be expected at all anorthosite/country rock contacts which have been overprinted by granulite metamorphism. </p> / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Petrology and Geochemistry of the Tuffaceous Footwall Rocks of the Williams Ore Zone, Hemlo Area, OntarioMcIlveen, Douglas G. 04 1900 (has links)
<p> The recent discovery of ore grade gold in the Hemlo area of Northern Ontario has provided the initiative for extensive exploration in that region. This study concentrates on rocks from the footwall to the ore zone on the Williams property of Long Lac Mineral Exploration. </p> <p> The footwall rocks consist of fine grained, finely laminated tuffs. The suite has undergone low grade regional metamorphism. Retrograde metamorphic effects are also present but appear to be confined to certain bands. Some of the minerals may have been introduced by the action of metasomatic fluids. </p> <p> The tuffs are quite felsic and many have the composition of a rhyolite. Samples tested for gold have up to 200 times the background concentration of a rhyolite . The gold is associated with high Sio2 and K20 and low Al2O3, CaO, Na2O, Fe2O3 and MgO contents. </p> <p> The ore deposit is similar in many respects to the Bousquet deposit of Northern Quebec. The Bousquet deposit has been interpreted as syngenetic by some authors and therefore it is quite possible that the Hemlo deposit is syngenetic as well. However the metamorphism and possible metasomatism that these rocks have undergone suggests that it may be an epigenetic deposit. Due to the limited number of samples in this study it could not conclusively be determined which hypothesis is correct. </p> / Thesis / Bachelor of Science (BSc)
