As an alternative to current trends in literary criticism, this thesis argues that the rigorous methods of obtaining knowledge as well as the concepts and insights developed in systematic psychology and psychoanalysis can and should be applied to both creative writers and their texts. Though the relationship between writer and text is a complicated one, a synthesis of well documented evidence from psychology can illuminate confusing aspects of the personality infused in the work and can thus move the critic closer to scientific literary truth, without dehumanizing literature.
The introduction outlines some of the reasons why psychological findings and insights should be useful and why there has not been widespread application of them in the humanities. Biography in particular, as an art form, can benefit from being psychologically informed. Conversely, the discipline of psychology has much to learn from the in-depth study of extraordinary individual lives" The first chapter provides a more detailed inquiry into the methodological problems associated with psychobiography and suggests some applications of scientific method to biography. The example of Virginia Woolf, whose life and works are particularly intricately connected, will be foremost amongst those used to demonstrate the specific problem of hypothesis testing. Some of the proposed strategies will be executed in the second chapter through a case study of the early life of Bertrand Russell, who provides a good example of some of the difficulties likely to be encountered, as well as the advantages of a psychological approach, especially since his life spans the entire development of modern psychology. Measuring the Approximate Number SystemSabri, Jomard January 2012 (has links)
Recent theories in numerical cognition suggest that humans are equipped with a mental system that supports the representation and processing of symbolic and nonsymbolic magnitudes, called the Approximate Number System (ANS). Prior research also suggests that the acuity of the ANS can predict individuals’ mathematical ability. However, results from research within the field has proven to be inconsistent with one another which raises questions about the reliability and validity of methods used to measure the ANS. The present study attempts to replicate the results found in studies suggesting that ANS acuity correlates with mathematical ability. The study also investigates the reliability and validity of different task that have been used to measure the ANS, and also presents a new method of measuring the ANS with an adaptive method. The results show that two tasks correlate significantly with mathematical ability, and multiple regression analyses show that ANS acuity can predict mathematical ability when controlling for general intelligence. Furthermore, the results also further highlight the issue of methodological flaws in previous studies.

METHODOLOGICAL QUALITY OF CHIROPRACTIC MIXED METHODS RESEARCH / Methodological Quality of Chiropractic Mixed Methods Research: A Meta- Epidemiological Review and Application in a Health Services Evaluation of Chiropractic Integration and Prescription Opioid UseEmary, Peter January 2022 (has links)
Background: An increasing number of mixed methods studies have been conducted across health care professions in recent years. However, little is known about the methodological reporting quality among mixed methods studies involving chiropractic research.
Objective: To examine the methodological quality of published chiropractic mixed methods studies, provide recommendations for improving future chiropractic mixed methods research, and apply these recommendations in two mixed methods health services evaluations of chiropractic integration and prescription opioid use for spinal pain. Methods: We conducted a meta-epidemiological review of the chiropractic mixed methods literature and examined reporting quality using the Good Reporting of A Mixed Methods Study guideline and risk of bias using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. We used generalized estimating equations to explore factors associated with higher methodological quality. We applied our findings in two sequential explanatory mixed methods investigations of the association between chiropractic care and opioid prescribing for non-cancer spinal pain.
Results: Among eligible mixed methods studies, we found that many were both poorly reported and at risk of bias. Publication in journals with an impact factor and/or more recent publication were significantly associated with higher methodological quality. In our sequential explanatory analyses, we found that receipt of chiropractic care was associated with decreases in initial opioid prescribing and long-term opioid use, and our qualitative results suggested these relationships were multi-factorial. Conclusion: We identified areas for improvement in the methodological reporting quality of chiropractic mixed methods research. Our mixed methods studies suggest that integration of chiropractic services into primary care centres may reduce the use of opioids for spinal pain. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / We reviewed the literature to assess the methodological reporting quality of mixed methods studies involving chiropractic research and found that most studies had important omissions. We applied these results to optimize methodologic reporting of two mixed methods studies on the association between chiropractic care and opioid prescribing. We found that patients with non-cancer spinal pain were less likely to receive an initial prescription for opioids if they accessed chiropractic care. Further, among chronic pain patients receiving opioids, we found that providing access to chiropractic care reduced their chances of continuing to receive opioids. The qualitative aspect of our studies provided important context to inform how patients and their primary care providers felt access to chiropractic care had reduced reliance on prescription opioids. These findings will increase awareness among researchers for opportunities to improve reporting quality of mixed methods research and highlight the potential role of chiropractic care in helping to address the opioid crisis.

No / The objectives of this paper are to raise awareness of the methodological standards that can affect the quality of radiographer plain-film reading performance studies and to determine the frequency with which these standards are fulfilled. Multiple search methods identified 30 such studies from between 1971 and the end of June 1999. The percentage of studies that fulfilled criteria for the 10 methodological standards were as follows. (1) Performance of a sample size calculation, 3%; (2) definition of a normal and abnormal report, 97%; (3) description of the sequence of events through which films passed before reporting, 94%; (4) analysis of individual groups of observers within a combination of groups, 50% (5) appropriate choice of reference standard, 80%; (6) appropriate choice of arbiter, 57%; (7) appropriate use of a control, 22%; (8) analysis of pertinent clinical subgroups, e.g. body areas, patient type, 44%; (9) availability of data for re-calculation, 59%; and (10) presentation of indeterminate results, 69%. These findings indicate variation in the application of the methodological standards to studies of radiographer's film reading performance. Careful consideration of these standards is an essential component of study quality and hence the validity of the evidence base used to underpin radiographic reporting policy.

The first objective of this thesis was to review the methodological issues with an emphasis on the quantitative techniques typically employed. A comparison of group and individual based analyses found negligible effects for both univariate and multivariate approaches while individual based analyses identified severe declines in function in a subset of participants. A standardized-regression based (SRB) approach was recommended as the method of choice. Furthermore, it was recommended that the number of tests be limited since comprehensive batteries can complicate identification due to increased risk of misclassification. Therefore, the second goal of the thesis was to evaluate the sensitivity of a reduced battery to the declines associated with chemo-fog. A comprehensive neuropsychological battery comprising 23 tests was compared to a subset of nine tests. SRB analyses demonstrated that a more selective battery was equally useful and may be appropriate for identification of chemo-fog. Given the variability in the composition of neuropsychological test batteries, the final aim of this thesis was to compare the structure of the theoretical cognitive domains with ones identified through exploratory factor analyses (principle axis factoring) to evaluate the convergence between the two. The results demonstrated there is statistical support for the conceptual framework that underlies the composition of the domains. The contributions of this thesis include providing methodological guidelines for those conducting future research in this area to ensure that results are comparable across studies and are meaningful, and evaluating the utility of a screening battery to facilitate identification of chemo-fog. In addition, it was demonstrated that despite the lack of professional guidelines informing the selection and construction of neuropsychological test batteries, there is statistical evidence to support the practice of grouping tests into domains based on theoretical grounds.

The “global war on terrorism” has pervaded the social scene following the attacks of September 11, 2001. Although the ripple effects of the wars are continuing to spread across the globe in the various political and foreign policy arenas, the aim of this study is to turn attention to the individuals who bore the battle, have returned home, and now face new challenges. The United States veteran population has experienced an unprecedented increase in numbers as a response to troop withdrawals in Iraq and Afghanistan. Although previous research has considered the potential difficulties veterans face when reintegrating into society, this study goes a step further and investigates how news media sources are called to participate in narrating veteran stories of war and specifically their stories documenting post-traumatic stress disorder. Drawing on a variety of theoretical perspectives and utilizing a multi-methodological approach, this study seeks to answer four central questions: First, how and by what channels do sources enter the news media conversation to comment on the veteran experience? Second, are veterans the main sources narrating their experiences or do other individuals, groups, or organizations speak more often in the news media? Third, what stories circulated and gained traction by narrating the lived experiences of veterans with PTSD? And fourth, what stories did veterans tell about their experiences, and what stories were told about veterans who suffer from PTSD? This study is organized in two distinct parts. Part one employs a quantitative content indexing analysis of four veteran related news media events across various newspaper, broadcast television news, and cable television news outlets in order to determine how sources entered the news media landscape, and who the sources were. Part two turns to examine four dominant news narratives that emerged from the direct quotation and paraphrased remarks gathered from part one’s analyzed news media texts. The study concludes by illustrating the powerful role news media sources play in the news, as well as the stories that emerge to define the lived experiences of veterans who suffer from PTSD. / text
