Health status of learners of educational institutions within Selebi Phikwe Ni-Cu mine area, Botswana

Ekosse, G.E., De Jager, L., Van Den Heever, D. January 2009 (has links)
Published Article / Health effects associated with Ni-Cu mining on learners living within the mining area at Selebi Phikwe were investigated through the administration of questionnaires. Results depicted learners suffering from a wide range of different symptoms and illnesses. 70% of the learners complained of coughs, 77% had influenza / common cold, and 80% had headaches. The repeated coughing, constant influenza / common cold and persistent headaches from which learners suffered, were very significantly higher than those at the control site; and incidences of their occurrence increased with closeness to the mining area. The unusual high occurrences of these ailments and illnesses coupled with associated diseases among learners were attributed to several environmental factors including contaminated particulate air matter (PAM) (rich in sulphur and heavy metals) linked to the mining and smelting of Ni-Cu.

Work engagement of employees in the mining environment / Albert Dirk Rathbone

Rathbone, Albert Dirk January 2006 (has links)
The mining industry is one of the largest employers in South Africa in an attempt to thrive in a continuously changing environment and in line with the modem organisation's focus on the various dimensions of employee well-being, mining organisations need the services of engaged workers. The objective of this research was to establish the relationship between work engagement and demographic characteristics, job characteristics and work-home interaction of employees working in the mining industry. A random sample of 320 employees was taken from various mining companies in the Gauteng and North West Provinces. The job characteristics, UWES and SWING questionnaires were used as measuring instruments. Cronbach alpha coefficients, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients, exploratory factor analysis, structural equation modelling and logistic regression analysis were used to analyse the data Exploratory factor analysis with target rotations confirmed the construct validity of the measuring instruments. Chi-square and t-tests indicated positive relationships between work engagement and race, autonomy, social support, instrumental support, task characteristics, positive work-home interference and positive home-work interference. Logistic regression analyses revealed that race, autonomy, task characteristics and positive home-work interference were significant predictors of work engagement. Recommendations were made for further research. / Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007

Discussion And Evaluation Of Mining And Environment Laws Of Turkey With Regard To Eu Legislation

Safak, Sukru 01 September 2006 (has links) (PDF)
ABSTRACT DISCUSSION AND EVALUATION OF MINING AND ENVIRONMENT LAWS OF TURKEY WITH REGARD TO EU LEGISLATION Turkey is trying to become a member of the European Union. Within this frame, studies are proceeding for harmonization of the Turkish legislation with the EU legislation. European legislation might have positive or negative impact on the mineral extraction industry and national mining law. Since there is no title directly related to mining policy in the EU legislation the mining policy of EU was evaluated especially under the titles&ldquo / energy&rdquo / and &ldquo / environment&rdquo / . In this thesis, the Turkish mining regulations and the environmental aspects of the mining activities have been investigated and discussed in comparison with those of EU. The latest developments about mining sectors of Turkey and EU have been evaluated and the comparison between EU directives and Turkish laws and regulations about mining have been made. In this study, modifications that should be realized in laws and regulations and measures that should be taken by Turkey as a candidate country for EU discussed and some proposals have been made.

According to data presented by the Mining and Energy Ministry, 80% of mines and natural deposits of ores are located in permanent preservation areas, however, the total of the concession areas in mine work is around 0,2% of the country's total area. Concerning mining in permanent preservation areas raises a conflict of assets and activities in common interest, as one interest should not overlay another, but yet seek a conjugation between rational use of the natural asset, that is, the ore, and the area preservation for environmental function. Therefore, practical mechanisms for prevention are used, such as environmental licensing of social-environment order and an analysis of EUP- Economical Utilization Plan (PAE - Plano de Aproveitamento Econômico) of social-economics and mechanisms for correction, obliging the miner to recover the degraded areas complying to foreseen constitutional obligation. The guarantee to sustainable development is sought, supported by social, economical and environmental bases / Mestrado / Administração e Politica de Recursos Minerais / Mestre em Geociências

The identification of early lead mining : environmental, archaeological and historical perspectives from Islay, Inner Hebrides, Scotland

Cressey, Michael January 1996 (has links)
This thesis investigates whether lead mining can be detected using palaeoenvironmental data recovered from freshwater loch and marsh sediment. Using radiometric time-frames and geochernical analyses the environmental impact of 18th and 19th century mining on Islay, Inner Hebrides, Scotland, has been investigated. The model of known mining events thus produced has been used to assess previously unrecorded (early) lead mining activity. Previous mining in the area is suggested by 18th century accounts that record the presence of 1,000 "early" workings scattered over the north-east limestone region. While there is little to support the often repeated assertion that lead mining dates back to the Norse Period (circa lOll th centuries) it is clear that it may well have been an established industry prior to the time of the first historical records in the 16th century. In order to use a palaeoenvironmental approach to the question of mining history and its impact, the strategy has been to use integrated loch and catclunent units of study. The areas considered are; Loch Finlaggan, Loch Lossit, Loch Bharradail and a control site at Loch Leathann. Soil and sediment geochemical mapping has been used to assess the distribution of lead, zinc and copper within the catchments. Environmental pathways have been identified and influx of lead, zinc and copper to the loch sediment has been detennined through the analyses of cores from each loch basin. Archaeological fieldsurvey and the re-examination of the results from mineral prospecting data across the study region provides new evidence on the geographical extent and contaminatory effects of leadmining in this area. This study shows how the effect of lead mining can be identified in the palaeoenvironrnental record from circa 1367 AD onwards, so mining in Islay does indeed predate the earliest known archaeological and historical records.
