Pre-Victorian origins of modern architectural theory

McMordie, Michael January 1972 (has links)
Modern architectural theory was a product of the encounter between the classical tradition, formed on Greek and Roman ideas in the Italian Renaissance, and the subjective aesthetics of eighteenth century Britain. Resulting ideas and buildings of the early nineteenth century were the precursors of the architecture and theories of the 1920's and 30's. The development of classical architectural theory is studied in the writings of the philosophers and architects who contributed its leading ideas. The relative importance of the two basic themes, 'reason' and 'experience', was established by Plato and Aristotle. The consequences of their ideas and priorities for architecture can be seen in the treatises of Vitruvius and Alberti. 'Reason' as the way to absolute beauty became the cornerstone of Renaissance theory, while 'experience', subjective and therefore relative, was rejected as leading only to inconsistent and erroneous opinion. In the seventeenth century the critical heritage of the Greeks bore new fruit in the rationalism of Descartes and his successors, and particularly the British 'empirical' philosophers of the eighteenth century. Criticism of classical theory by Perrault, Cordemoy and Laugier in France led to a more rigorous 'rational' theory, still essentially classical in its emphasis on the absolute qualities of building forms. In Britain rational analysis of subjective 'experience' led to a comprehensive aesthetic theory based on the association of ideas and most expounded by Archibald Alison in 1790. Further consequences of the rationalism of this period were the revolutionary economic and political changes which shook France and Britain and had far-reaching consequences for architecture. Most advanced in Britain, these changes together with the new aesthetic theories had their most direct architectural effects on the design of smaller houses. The many books of cottage and villa designs published around 1800 record both the architecture of the period and the ideas on which it was based. Particular attention is given to the writings of J.C. Loudon as the most comprehensive exposition of advanced pre-Victorian theory. The development of architectural ideas in Victorian and modern times shows both continuity with earlier streams of thought, and significant changes in particular as the failure of traditional theory to cope with social change became critical. The writings of Pugin, Ruskin, Fergusson, and Morris reveal the scope of Victorian theory and its contribution to modern thought. The transition from Victorian to modern architecture is shown in a comparison of Lethaby and Muthesius that also exposes a significant divergence in the tendency of their ideas. Their ideas led directly to the architecture of the early modern period. A final comparison of early modern and pre-Victorian ideas and buildings exposes the limitations of modern architectural theory.

Carlos Millan: um estudo sobre a produção em arquitetura / Carlos Millan: an study about the architectural works

Matera, Sérgio 10 March 2006 (has links)
The dissertation approaches the architecture projects developed by Carlos Barjas Millan (1927/1964) from 1951 to 1964, during approximately 15 years of professional work, as well as his personal and academic formation. The study object is the set of this architectural production analyzed from its insertion in the cultural and political moment, since the second Getúlio Vargas government and the country’s democratization until the 1964 Military Coup. This study provides an instrument for a systematic reflection about the architect Carlos Millan’s work and about the Brazilian Modern Architecture, once the literature concerning his career and architectonic production is scarce and little specific. The study concerning Millan’s professional development and his projects from the drawing archives holdings of the FAUUSP library aims at a better understanding of the architect’s career, who worked with architecture, urban planning, furniture design, as a professor of FAUM and FAUUSP, and passed along two polarized groups of modern architecture in São Paulo, in the 50’s and 60’s, represented by Miguel Forte and Vilanova Artigas. Carlos Millan’s work was not very numerous, relatively restrict to São Paulo city, being the great majority of residences, which does not reduce the importance of his production. Through the rescue of the architect’s career, the study of the professional biography and of the projects of this research, the incorporation of this instrument as an organized database characterizes an important stage for future studies about the Modern Architecture of São Paulo and Brazil. This study aims at a better comprehension of the Brazilian architecture development considering that hypothesis that have already been identified by the historiography are reflected in the projects studied here: the concern of a group of Brazilian architects about the technologic development, searching for formal solutions, for techniques and esthetics with cultural roots inserted in a project of modernization of the country. The dissertation gathers in a single research information about projects developed by Millan during his professional activity by a compilation of drawings and pictures of the most significant work of his career, allowing a better access to the projects by means of a research instrument with detailed and organized data, and with analyses relating the projects among themselves and with the historical moment of their production.

O traço moderno na arquitetura religiosa paulista / The modern trait in the religious architecture of São Paulo

Lima Junior, Márcio Antonio de 17 June 2016 (has links)
Basically on the philosophical and historical basis of Modernity there is a marked separation between matter and the more diffuse field of feelings and the \"spirit\". This dualism would also extend to the artistic field, which in architecture would be characterized in the production of projects where the resolution of functional and technical problems was valued. However, twentieth-century architecture would conform to something larger than strictly functional concerns, the forerunners of modernity themselves did not believe that forms simply followed or deduced from function. The project of secularization existing in Modernity, which aimed at a society based solely on a model of strict rationality was not fulfilled. What we saw was the continuation of a request for a program that was apparently more focused on poetic and metaphorical issues, such as sacred space, even though it was no longer the center of the twentieth century\'s plastic concerns. Guided by this context, the present study deals with the production of religious architecture developed in the modern São Paulo scenario, identifying the continuities, ruptures and new appropriations in the formal, functional, liturgical and symbolic field. The identification of several projects of São Paulo Christian temples attuned to the modern language made it possible to relate this production to the process of modernization initiated in the first half of the twentieth century, as well as to analyze the architectural projects important for the changes that have occurred in the state of sacred architecture. Such projects show great sensitivity in working with pure forms, justifying within an aesthetic and poetic spectrum the integrity of the geometric tracing of the simple and abstract lines to the modern Temple. The various architects of São Paulo show in their religious production an engagement with the project of the sacred space where it is possible to verify the translation of the presuppositions of Modern Architecture for the theme. A critical historiographical construction guides the work, which together with the presentation of little known projects, recognizes and positions such production as a program belonging to the ideology of the Modern Movement. It also discusses the formal reasons and meanings in the construction of the sacred space, property redeemed by modern architects, who were constantly asked to solve programs like this. The course of the modern trait cut by the religious bias thus seeks to contribute to a broader architectural debate surrounding issues relating to the historiography of modern architecture.

Entre linhas e curvas: a teoria e a prática na obra de Zenon Lotufo / Between lines and curves: theory and practice in the work of Zenon Lotufo.

Modenese Filho, Eduardo 18 April 2008 (has links)
The focus of this work is the relationship between theory and practice in the professional career of the architect Zenon Lotufo (1911-1985) pointing out remarkable facts that determined a personal evolving picture in a certain historical context. A period when the Brazilian modern architecture began to appear and consolidated . Facts as his academic formation in the Engineer-Architect course at the Escola Politécnica de São Paulo (33-36) and the influence of Professor Luis Anhaia Mello give origin to this itinerary. The contacts with Abelardo de Souza and Hélio Duarte (46-48) and with Oscar Niemeyer  in the project of the Ibirapuera Park (51-54) complement his modern repertory. His experience as a professor at the new founded Faculty of Archictecture and Urbanism (48) culminates with the polemic Chair Exam (57). And finally this route closes down in a mature production phase (58-77), based on the characteristics of the so called paulista brutalism\".

Residências em Ribeirão Preto (1955 a 1980): discussão sobre uma produção moderna através de uma perspectiva urbana / Dwellings in Ribeirão Preto (1955 to 1980): a modern production\'s discussion through an urban perspective

Ferreira, Fernando Gobbo 18 May 2017 (has links)
In the XIX century, the city of Ribeirão Preto (314 kilometers from São Paulo) gathered wealth within Coffee agriculture crop, establishing a peculiar architectural basis compared to other important cities in the São Paulo State. That are only a few dwellings and \"palacetes\" that remain in the city, nevertheless rightly preserved or in the process to guarantee it\'s legacy. The preservation of such pieces of architecture is constantly in the media\'s focus, raising the population awareness about its importance. Even though the preservation of Ribeirão Preto\'s modern residential architecture from the 1950\'s, 1960\'s and 1970\'s decades has not been given the deserved importance. This dissertation is supported by a discussion and questioning about the preservation of such production through its representations: photographs, interviews with architects and dwellers, approval projects in the city hall and bibliography. Walking by the city, one can find neighborhoods with dwellings that still preserve their original characteristics. The prime architects to work in the city, in strictly residential neighborhoods, author these dwellings. Good examples are the dwellings designed by the architects Cássio Pinheiro Gonçalves and Ijair Cunha, graduated in the first classes of Architecture and Urbanism in the Mackenzie Presbyterian University (1950) and the University of São Paulo (1952), which dictated different relations with public and private spaces, projects in consonance with the Avant-garde modern architecture designs produced in that period of time, mainly in the city of São Paulo, whose constructive systems, relation with the surroundings and aesthetic were in conflict with the architectural patterns of it\'s time. In Ribeirão Preto, in Jardim Sumaré and Alto da Boa Vista neighborhoods, these architecture dwellings designed by young urbanists, persist as a memory of an idealized city that has not consolidate itself. Nowadays, these houses are unnoticed to the population\'s sight, in neighborhoods that are occupied by commercial buildings that demeanor the original residential landscape. Once these dwellings begin to be demolished, photographic registers, backed up by the collaborative social media Arquigrafia, planned always by a street view perspective, guarantee that this legacy can be preserved. A general research creating a scope of this never yet disclosed architectural production, is the first step to a research model that can be replicated, that guarantees a representation databank of architectural design such as the social media Arquigrafia, to future studies of the real scope of such Brazilian modern architectural production, beyond the \"official\" architecture. The disclosure of original documents, photographs and drawings, as well as oral registers of people involved in its constructions, contribute to the modern architecture history, to the construction of knowledge about project, representation and modern urban imaginary in Brazil. The single-family dwellings are the most common architectural program in the cities and its studies clarify one of the architectural professional paths and its current role into the contemporary urban landscape.
