Analysis, design, optimisation and testing of a gyroscopically stabilized platform

Redwood, Benjamin Philip January 2014 (has links)
Gyroscopic stabilization can be used to maintain an otherwise unstable body in an upright position. Devices equipped with gyroscopes can balance upon a small area or point without falling over when the gyroscopic stabilizing force is greater than a rotational force or moment from an out-of-balance load that causes the device to tip. A new concept for a gyroscopically stabilized platform has been proposed in the form of a schematic diagram. The proposed system comprises of four interconnected gyroscopes that react to the tipping of an inherently unstable external body. The purpose of this research is to evolve a design for, and establish the feasibility of building the proposed stable platform using available materials and technology. If feasible, the gyroscopically stabilized platform will be made at the most practical and economic size. Louis Brennan developed a 37 tonne monorail that was maintained in the upright position with two 3 tonne counter rotating gyroscopes. The Brennan monorail is analysed to better understand the behaviour of a similar coupled gyroscopic stabilization system. The reactions between the components that maintain the monorail in the stable position are studied and comparisons are made between the proposed stable platform and the Brennan system. A mathematical analysis of the proposed system is presented. The equations of motion for the system are derived using the Lagrangian Formalism. The characteristic equation of the system is then determined and from this a set of stability conditions imposed on the design of the physical parameters of the stable platform. The general solutions to the equations of motion are then derived. Expressions that model the behaviour of two of the variables that describe the motion of the stable platform are determined. A systematic approach is adopted for establishing a new concept for the proposed system. Testing of the initial stable platform prototype (Prototype A) showed the system did not behave as intended. The platform was optimised further and this resulted in a second prototype, Prototype B. Prototype B exhibiting the desired oscillatory motion about the vertical of the platform. Predictions made using the mathematical model are compared with empirical results. The mathematical model was found to be an accurate method for predicting the response of the stable platform.

Monorail: An Alternative Transportation Mode For Metu

Gokbulut, Alev 01 September 2003 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this thesis is to investigate an alternative mode of transportation for METU and the impacts of spatial transformations generated by the proposed system in an architectural context. This study embraces modern concepts of space-time in the practice of architectural design, and involves a sensitive consideration of the perception of space relative to position, speed and movement. In an urban context, the thesis unfolds spatial transformations affected by new movement technology. While the notions of movement and speed fundamentally shape the image of the contemporary city, METU campus will be reanalyzed within this framework.

Multi-criteria Feasibility Assessment Of The Monorail Transportation System In Metu Campus

Tarighi, Amin 01 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The overall objective of this thesis is to assess the financial, technical and social feasibility of investing in modern Automated People Movers (APM) transportation systems, generally known as monorails, in METU campus which presents a unique opportunity to fulfill the modern-day transportation needs of METU campus. This study complements the Presidency Office&rsquo / s long term goal to integrate environmental, social and economic sustainability into the policies, practices and culture of the university and ultimately reduce the consumption of all resources on campus and traffic congestion and accidents. In this context, the consequent cost-benefit effects of the proposed monorail system on campus life were quantified in monetary expressions and the corresponding multi-criteria feasibility assessment including: Break-even Analysis, Cost Effectiveness Assessments and Cost Benefit Analysis have been done successfully. According to these analyses the overall capital cost of system is $46.5 million which covers the 24 months project construction period, and an additional annual operating and maintenance cost of $2 million will span the 30 year project life time. Three different scenarios were proposed for financing the project and relevant break-even points were determined for each of the scenarios. Eventually, it appears that based on the evaluations, constructing such a transit system in METU campus will be cost effective and will certainly enhance the transportation, and will contribute to the institutional improvements and environmental preservation schemes of METU campus.

Lately, transportation and traffic have become in both, mid-sized and big cities, a barrier to urban and regional development, due to various antagonistic situations experienced when commuting. Management efforts are engendered by the government in an attempt to find solutions for the matter have proved ineffective so far. The city of Goiânia is a city-center hub of activities of a Metropolitan Area, a region with a population of an estimated 2,206,134 residents (IBGE, 2011), and 1,000,000 vehicles cruising its road system (DETRAN, 2001). The struggle for room in the lanes, among passenger cars, freight and passenger transport, is already noticeable during peak hours. The saturation level of the system undermines the effective public passenger transportation. In turn, the management of a Passenger Public-Transportation System that is effectively integrated has failed to reach satisfactory results, considering the organizational traits that have been put in action up to now. This paper proposes an analysis of the deployment of the monorail technology in the Integrated Passenger Public-Transportation in the metropolitan area of Goiânia, by means of a methodology of cost-benefit analysis, depicting a brief characterization of monorail technology, a database on the transport system and the definition of a basic layout of metro route in territorial space. As a product, the result of cost-benefit analysis proposes a basic model of monorail technology implementation in the Metropolitan Public Transport Network in Goiânia, noting advantages and disadvantages of such a model. Last, but not least, final considerations about the methodology and the proposed model will be discussed.

Avaliação energética, econômica e socioambiental de alternativas para sistemas de transportes urbanos coletivos a partir do modelo de apoio multicritério à decisão / Energy, economic and socio-environmental evaluation of alternatives for urban transport systems based on the multicriteria decision support model.

Pedroso, Guilherme 15 December 2017 (has links)
This research focuses on decision-making support methods to choice public urban transport modes and analyzes the operational and functional performances of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Monorail systems. A multicriteria decision aided model (MDAM) in complex scenarios is used in the analysis and has as input data the subjective preferences of stakeholders and the objective and subjective performances of the three modalities in relation to a set of five criteria and 22 subcriteria. This system covers the axes of energy efficiency, cost, economic and financial feasibility, travel quality and environmental impacts. Stakeholders selected with profiles of operator, neighbor, user, equipment and service provider and consultant in urban transport assign their preferences, scoring them on a numerical scale from 1 to 9. In order to apply the model in the region of the city of São Paulo, 138 opinions were collected through evaluation forms and interviews conducted in that region. Each of the three modes, once configured to meet the operational and functional requirements of the transport service defined by a common functional unit, has its performances against the same set of criteria and subcriteria scored on a numerical scale. A global index (GI), which defines the priority of each alternative, is obtained by aggregating the preferences and performances according to an additive function. The MDAM model was applied in a case study that has simulated the operation of the three transport modalities in the stretch between the stations Vila Prudente and São Mateus of the Line 15 of the São Paulo Metro, whose general requirements did define the functional unit of the case. Within the limits and assumptions defined for the case study, the calculated global indices indicated the first preference for the Monorail modal, followed, in sequence, by the LRT and BRT.
