Male sexual behaviour and protective practices in the context of a generalized HIV/AIDS epidemic : a case study of an urban and rural area in Mozambique.

This study investigates male sexual behaviour and protective practices in the context of a generalized HIV/AIDS epidemic in Mozambique. It focus on how gender norms, particularly notions of masculinity influence sexual behaviour and the ability of men (and women) to protect themselves against HIV infection. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods is used in this study. The qualitative data comes from 16 focus group discussions and 20 in-depth interviews and the quantitative data comes from a survey conducted with 209 men and 217 women. This methodological approach has proven useful in exploring complex and sensitive matters such as sexual behaviour. In this study, where it was possible, the findings from the survey were supported by quotes from focus groups discussions and in-depth interviews. The findings of this study reveal that traditional gender norms, particularly rigid notions of masculinity are still prevalent in the study settings. The existing notions of manhood are mostly associated with traditional views of men as providers and main breadwinners. In contrast, women are seen as the family caregivers. Practices which bring social prestige both in the community and in the society at large are highly valued for men. Meanwhile, traditional notions of masculinity face enormous challenges in the existing socio-economic context which is characterized by a lack of employment and widespread poverty. This has negative consequences for male self-esteem including their sense of manhood. The study shows that some men believe that having multiple sexual partners is part of male identity and is supported by culture. Similarly, some women also believe that a man cannot be satisfied with one partner or stay long without having sex. These beliefs have important implications in a country with a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS. The study found that traditional notions of manhood prevent men from accessing correct health information thereby perpetuating the cycle of harmful practices for themselves and their females partners. The findings of this study suggest that despite a universal awareness of HIV infection and protective strategies, multiple sexual partnerships and unprotected sex among heterosexual men and women are the driving force sustaining the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the study settings. This is worsened by the widespread negative meanings attached to condoms. The study shows that the level of condom use (31 percent among men and 20 percent among women) is encouraging but not sufficient to curb the level of HIV infections. Breeding cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) walp.) for improved drought tolerance in Mozambique

Cowpea yields in Mozambique can be increased through breeding farmers’ accepted cultivars with drought tolerance and stability across environments. A study was conducted in the southern region of Mozambique to: (1) determine farmers perceptions on major constraints limiting cowpea production and identify preferences regarding cultivars and traits, (2) determine the variability of selected cowpea germplasm for drought tolerance, (3) determine the gene action controlling drought tolerance, yield and yield components in cowpea, and (4) assess the genotype × environment interaction and yield stability of cowpea genotypes under drought-stressed and non-stressed conditions. The study on farmers’ perceptions about the major constraints limiting cowpea production and preferences regarding cowpea cultivars and traits established that cowpea was an important crop, cultivated for its grain, leaves and fresh pods for household consumption and the market. The study revealed that cowpea grain and leaves were equally important across the three districts in the study. Differences in accessibility to markets between districts influenced the ranking of grain and leaves among districts. Grain was more important in Bilene and Chibuto districts which are situated far from the major urban centre, Maputo, while leaves were more important in Boane district which is near the major market of Maputo. Fresh pods were important in Bilene district which is situated along the major highway connecting Maputo and other provinces. Drought was the most important production constraint followed by aphids, bruchids and viral diseases. The criteria used by farmers to select cowpea varieties included high grain and leaf yield, large seed size, earliness, smoothness of the testa and potential marketability of the variety. The implication of this study is that different types of varieties need to be developed for different areas. Dual-purpose or grain-type varieties need to be developed for areas situated far away from the major markets while varieties for leaf production need to be bred for areas near major markets. During the breeding process, a selection index needs to be adopted whereby drought tolerance, high grain and leaf yield, large seed size, smooth testa, earliness, aphids and bruchids resistance should be integrated as components of the index. High grain yield should receive high weight for varieties developed for areas located far from major markets while high leaf yield would receive high weight for varieties developed for areas located near major markets. The study on variability of cowpea germplasm collections for drought tolerance revealed wide genotypic variability among the tested germplasm. Biplot displays indicated that the genotypes could be grouped into four categories according to their drought tolerance and yielding ability as indicated below: high yielding-drought tolerant (group A), high yielding-drought susceptible (group B), low yielding-drought tolerant (group C), and low yielding-drought susceptible (group D). Examples of high yielding-drought tolerant genotypes were Sh-50, UC-524B, INIA-24, INIA-120, IT96D-610 and Tete-2. Stress tolerance index was the best criterion for assessing genotypes for variability in drought tolerance because it enabled the identification of high yielding and drought tolerant genotypes (group A). The assessment on gene action controlling drought tolerance (stay-green), yield and components indicated that both additive and non-additive effects were involved in controlling all of these traits. Additive gene action was more important than non-additive gene affects in controlling stay-green, days to flowering, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and hundred seed weight. Under no-stress conditions, additive gene action was more important than non-additive gene action while under drought-stressed conditions, non-additive gene effects were more important than additive gene effects. Stay-green can easily be assessed visually in early segregating populations while yield and yield related traits cannot. Hence, selection for drought tolerance using the stay-green trait would be effective in early segregating generations while selection for yield and number of pods per plant would be effective in late segregating generations. Selection for yield could be conducted directly under no-stress conditions and indirectly using the number of pods per plant under drought stress conditions. Genotype INIA-41 would be the most desirable to use as a parent for drought tolerance and IT93K-503-1 would be the most desirable to use as a parent for drought tolerance and yield. The assessment on genotype × environment interaction and cowpea grain yield stability for forty-eight (48) cowpea genotypes grown under drought-stressed and non-stressed conditions indicated that cross-over genotype × environment interactions were present for yield indicating that genotypes responded differently to varying environmental conditions. Genotypes adapted to specific environmental conditions could be identified. Genotypes IT-18, INIA-51, INIA-51A and Nhavanca were adapted to non-stressed environments that were either drought stressed or non-stressed while VAR-11D was adapted to low yielding, stressful environments. Genotypes INIA-23A, INIA-81D, INIA-24, INIA-25, INIA-16 and INIA-76 were high yielding and stable while genotypes IT-18, INIA-51, INIA-51A, Nhavanca and VAR-11D were high yielding and unstable. Genotypes Bambey-21, INIA-36, INIA-12 and Monteiro were consistently low yielding and stable except INIA-12 that was consistently unstable. Chókwè was a high yielding environment and suitable for identifying high yielding genotypes but not ideal for selection because it was not representative of an average environment while Umbeluzi was low yielding and not ideal for selection. Overall, the study revealed that genetic improvement of drought tolerance and yield would be feasible. Potential parents for genetic improvement for yield and drought tolerance were identified. However, further studies for assessing yield stability of cowpea genotypes are necessary and could be achieved by including more seasons and sites to get a better understanding of the genotype × environment interaction and yield stability of cowpea in Mozambique. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2010.

The role of irrigation policies in expanding irrigated food production in Mozambique.

In recognition of the crucial role irrigation plays in stabilizing agriculture production in the face of erratic rainfall that often affects Mozambique, the Government has, since national independence in 1975, implemented several policies regarding irrigation development. Yet, the country is still struggling to expand the area equipped for food crop irrigation. In particular, the formulation and implementation of irrigation policies has faced constraints in the expansion and effective use of irrigated land to ensure increased food production. Despite this, there has not been a systematic effort to consistently document and identify constraints and enablers of irrigation policies and development in to support evidence-based policy dialogue and interventions. This study intends to fill this gap. It does this through an analytical historical trajectory of the irrigation subsector, paying particular attention to critical factors affecting the effectiveness of irrigation policies in contributing to the expansion and effective use of irrigated land to enhance agriculture’s contribution to food production and food security in Mozambique. A qualitative approach is employed in which a review of the existing literature and official documents, along with secondary data collection, is augmented with interviews of key informants and expert opinions. The analysis posits that the ability of irrigation policies to effectively contribute to an expansion and improvement of irrigated production can be enhanced through addressing issues of policy weaknesses, limited investment resources to expand irrigated land, inadequate public institutional support to the irrigation subsector, especially at field level, limited involvement of the private sector in irrigation, weak farmers’ organizations (FOs) and water users associations (WUAs) on irrigated land as well as weak information and knowledge generation and sharing among relevant stakeholders. These issues are particularly pertinent in light of the anticipated implementation of the 2010 Irrigation Strategy. The role, cooperation and partnerships among Government, private sector, FOs/WUAs and development partners need to be taken into account in the formulation and implementation of public irrigation policies. The impact and control of waterweeds in the Southern Mozambique Basin rivers

In Mozambique, establishment of aquatic weeds has been enhanced through the increased enrichment of water bodies by nutrient runoffs from human and agricultural wastes that lead to an increase in nitrate and phosphate in the water. The aquatic weeds, water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), red water fern ( Azolla microphylla), water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) and salvinia (Salvinia molesta) were found in most watercourses in Mozambique and are becoming aggressive in some watercourses, especially in the Umbeluzi and Incomati rivers. Farmers and people living along the rivers are aware of the negative impact of the water weeds because the large mats of weeds cause loss of shoreline and navigability along the rivers. Other commonly perceived effects of aquatic invasive plants in Mozambique rivers include: reduced navigable surface area; difficulties for fishermen, which reduces income; increased prevalence of insects and insect-borne disease, and decreased aesthetic value. The methods currently used for the control and management of the aquatic weeds are mechanical and manual control. Both methods are costly, time consuming, and only provide a short-term solution to the problem. The study found that the weevils Neochetina eichhorniae and N. bruchi were effective biological control agents in the study area but their impact is too gradual compared to the aggressive proliferation of water hyacinth. The one year lab-experiment clearly demonstrated that the water lettuce weed had a significant impact on the recruitment of macro-invertebrates to the artificial substrates, and water lettuce contributed to the reduction of oxygen in the water and consequent reduction of macro-invertebrate abundance and diversity. The biodiversity recovered at the same time in the pools containing water lettuce controlled by N. affinis and water lettuce controlled by herbicide, but richness and diversity of macro-invertebrates was higher in the water lettuce controlled by N affinis during the first sampling occasion compared to the water lettuce in pools controlled by herbicide, where macro-invertebrates increased only when DO levels recovered after water lettuce mat decay. The number of taxa recorded in this study is an indication of the significance of macro-invertebrates in an aquatic environment. This therefore emphasizes the need for more research efforts into macrophyte and macro-invertebrate associations in the aquatic system to better understand the implications of habitat modification arising from human activities. It will also enable us to be better equipped with a more appropriate ecological understanding for aquatic resources management.

Mapping of the distribution of Mycobacterium bovis strains involved in bovine tuberculosis in Mozambique

Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Bovine tuberculosis (BTB), caused by bacteria of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex is reported to cause economic and public health negative impact in countries where it is prevalent. The control of the disease has been a difficult task worldwide. The main object of this thesis was to use molecular tools to generate useful information to contribute to the design of appropriate BTB control measures in Mozambique. To do so we considered a deep knowledge of the BTB history in Mozambique to be essential. The search was largely based on the reports produced annually by the Veterinary Services and other available information. We found reports of BTB in Mozambique as early as 1940. These cases were mainly identified as a result of post-mortem meat inspection. The higher numbers of cases reported were from 8 locations, namely Maputo, Magude, Vilanculos, Beira, Chimoio, Tete, Quelimane and Nampula, and served as a basis to decide the locations to perform prevalence and molecular epidemiologic studies. Prevalence studies were done in 10 districts selected based on the history of a high number of BTB case reports (intentionally biased towards locations presumably with higher prevalence), a high cattle density, but also to represent districts from the south, centre and north of Mozambique. A representative sample was defined, based on all livestock areas or villages in Massingir and Govuro Districts or by randomly selecting small-scale and commercial herds in 8 districts, specifically Manhiça, Chibuto, Buzi, Gondola, Mutarara, Mogovolas, Angoche and Mecanhelas. Results were obtained from 6983 cattle tested using tuberculin testing. Apparent prevalence varied from 0.98% in Massingir to 39.6% in the Govuro, with prevalence as high as 71.4% in some livestock areas/herds. The analysis of risk factors showed no noteworthy difference with respect to the sex of the animal. Younger age had significantly lower odds of infection compared to the older age class. There was a tendency of cattle from small-scale herds to have lower prevalence when compared to the commercial herds. From the prevalence studies, 187 tissue and 41 milk samples from BTB reactors were collected. Additionally 220 tissue samples were obtained from the Central Veterinary Laboratory routine diagnostic work. Samples were subject to bacteriological culture and a collection of 170 M. bovis isolates were obtained. Eight additional isolates were supplied from another study. All isolates were subjected to molecular typing using spoligotyping, and a sub-sample using MIRU-VNTR and regions of difference (RD) analysis. Fifteen different spoligotype patterns were identified of which 8 were not previously registered in the Mbovis.org database. The pattern SB0961 accounted for 61% of the isolates and was found in all areas of the country investigated. We hypothesize that this was one of the first clones to be introduced in Mozambique. Twenty-nine isolates had the pattern SB0140, which is specific for the European 1 (Eu1) clonal complex. Eleven isolates with this spoligotype were subjected to RD analysis, and all isolates had the Eu1 specific deletion. These were all isolated from cattle from the south of Mozambique and the majority from commercial farms that imported cattle, mainly from South Africa, where the Eu1 clonal complex is common. There were no isolates of the African 1 (Af1) or African 2 (Af2) clonal complexes that are frequent in Central-West Africa and East Africa, respectively. The clones identified from different farms and districts, strongly suggest routes of transmission and/or common source of infection. In conclusion, our results show a potential increase in the prevalence of BTB in Mozambique even taking into consideration i) that the selection of locations in our study was biased towards locations with a history of higher BTB prevalence and ii) the use of a more sensitive technique i.e. the testing in the middle neck region as opposed to the testing in the caudal fold as used in previous studies. Even if no cattle to human transmission was found in studies done in Mozambique so far, the evidence of M. bovis shedding through milk and the lack of correct practices to prevent animal to human transmission (consumption of raw milk), strongly suggests that there is zoonotic risk; a subject that needs to be investigated. The results presented in this work also strengthen the need to reinforce the current regulations that require a negative BTB test result before cattle importation. The same should be enforced for the internal movements, as the frequency of shared genotypes (Spoligotype and MIRU) from cattle originating from different parts of the country strongly suggest intra-contry transmission of BTB. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Beestering (BTB), wat veroorsaak word deur bakterieë van die Mycobacterium tuberculosis kompleks, het ‘n negatiewe impak op die ekonomiese en publike gesondheid in lande waar dit voorkom. Die beheer van die siekte is ‘n moeilike taak wêreldwyd. Die hoofdoel van hierdie tesis was om molekulêre toetse te gebruik om nuttige inligting te genereer wat sal bydra tot die ontwikkeling van toepaslike BTB beheermaatrëels in Mosambiek. Om dit te kon doen, was dit noodsaaklik om ‘n indiepte kennies te hê van BTB geskiedenis in Mosambiek. Die soektog was gebaseer op jaarlikse verslae van Veearts Dienste en ander beskikbare inligting. Resultate is verkry deur 6983 beeste te toets met behulp van die tuberkulien vel toets. Monsters was onderhewig aan bakteriologiese kweking en 'n versameling van 170 M. bovis isolate is verkry. Agt bykomende isolate is voorsien deur 'n ander studie. Alle isolate was onderhewig aan molekulêre-tipering met behulp van spoligotipering en ‘n subgroep met behulp van MIRU-VNTR en analise van genomies diverse areas. Vyftien verskillende spoligotipering patrone is geïdentifiseer, waarvan 8 nie voorheen in die Mbovis.org databasis geregistreer is nie. Die SB0961 patroon is geïdentifiseer vir 61% van die isolate en gevind in alle dele van die land wat ondersoek was. Ons hipotese is dat hierdie een van die eerste klone was wat voorgestel is in Mosambiek. Nege en twintig isolate het die SB0140 patroon gehad wat spesifiek is aan die Europese 1 (EU1) klonale kompleks. Elf isolate met hierdie spoligotipering patroon is verder geanaliseer om genomies diverse areas te identifiseer, waarvan almal die Eu1 spesifieke delesie getoon het. Hierdie isolate is almal geïsoleer uit beeste van die suide van Mosambiek, asook beeste gevind op kommersiele plase wat hoofsaaklik vanuit Suid Afrika invoer- waar die EU1 klonale kompleks algemeen is. Daar is geen isolate van die Afrikaans 1 (AF1) of Afrikaans 2 (AF2) klonale komplekse nie, dikwels gevind in onderskeidelik Sentraal-Wes-Afrika en Oos- Afrika. Isolate wat in verskillende plase en distrikte geïdentifiser is dui roetes van transmissie en/ of a gemeenskaplike bron van infeksie aan. Ten slotte, ons resultate dui op 'n moontlike toename in die voorkoms van BTB in Mosambiek, selfs met inagneming dat i) die keuse van areas in ons studie is bevooroordeeld teenoor areas met 'n geskiedenis van hoër BTB voorkoms en ii) die gebruik van 'n meer sensitiewe tegniek d.w.s. toetsing in die middel nekgebied i.p.v. toetsing in die stert vou soos gebruik in vorige studies. Selfs al is geen bees-na-mens-oordrag gevind nie, is die bewys van M. bovis oordrag deur melk en die gebrek aan korrekte prosedures om dier-na-mens-oordrag te voorkom (verbruik van nie-gepasturiseerde melk), ‘n sterk bewys van die soönotiese risiko; ‘n onderwerp wat ondersoek moet word. Die resultate van hierdie ondersoek beklemtoon die behoefte om die huidige regulasies wat ‘n negatiewe BTB toetsuitslag vereis voor beeste ingevoer word, te versterk. Dieselfde maatreëls moet ingestel word vir interne beweging van beeste, omdat die frekwensie van gedeelde genotipes (Spoligotipering en MIRU) tussen beeste met oorsprong uit verskillende dele van die land aandui dat interne oordrag van BTB plaasvind.

Geology of the KaNyaka barrier island system, Maputo Bay, Mozambique

M.Sc. / The KaNyaka barrier island system consists of the vegetated KaNyaka and Portuguese Islands, and various partially exposed sandbars. It is situated in south-easternmost Mozambique where it forms a barrier between Maputo Bay in the west and the Indian Ocean in the east. It forms part of the northern most limit of the Maputaland Group, which consists of Pliocene to Holocene sediments. The island system is an example of a compound barrier island since it comprises a stacked succession of several ancient shoreline marine and aeolian sedimentary rock units and sediments, along with various active sedimentary environments. This thesis describe the general geology of the island system, the petrography of the various rock and sedimentary units and provide information on provenance of sediment based on detrital zircon age populations. It also provides several new 14C age dates of shell fossils and calcified rhizoliths. KaNyaka Island consists of two high north-south trending dune cordons along its eastern and western shores, with a low-lying dune-covered area in between. The Western dune cordon consists of aeolian calcareous quartz arenite of the Ridjene Formation unconformably overlain by calcified aeolian dunes of the Alto Pocuane Formation in turn overlain by the unlithified red dunes of the Barreira Vermelha Formation. The core of the Eastern dune cordon consists of the calcareous quartz arenite of the Cabo Inhaca Formation comprised of stacked calcified aeolian dunes, the marine and tidal deposits of the Ponta Mazondue and Ponta Torres formations form the eastern and south-western flanks of the Eastern dune cordon. The formations are overlain by unlithified red to orange sands of the Changana Formation and partially lithified light grey to yellow sands of the Muamuluago Formation. The area between these two dune cordons is covered by low-lying aeolian dunes of the Alto Chumine Formation, ancient sandbar and beach deposits of the Chunhe Formation and both modern and paleo-intertidal flat deposits. Modern sedimentary environments include high-energy beaches, intertidal flats, sand spits, sandbars and aeolian dunes. The presence of aeolian deposits extending below the present sea-level, and marine deposits up to 3m above it, indicates that the KaNyaka barrier island system records a long history of sea-level change. 14C dating of marine and freshwater shell fossils and a rhizolith collected from several of the formations on the KaNyaka barrier island system assist in defining the history of the island with reference to sea-level fluctuations. Results from two freshwater shell fossils in the aeolian Alto Pocuane and Cabo Inhaca Formations indicate that they were deposited and subsequently calcified 47 000 and 30 000 years ago respectively, at times when the sea-level was 40 - 60 m lower than at present. The red sand of the Barreira Vermelha and Changana formation overlying these calcified dunes are suggested to have formed when climate was drier and sea-level even lower, during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) around 17 000 years ago. 14C ages on formations overlying the red sand deposits all postdate the Last Glacial Maximum and record sediment deposition of the past 7 000 years when the sea-level was either rather similar or somewhat higher than the present. Detrital zircon age populations, determined by laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), indicate that the majority of the sediment building the barrier island system was derived from the Grenvillian (~1100 Ma) and the Pan-African (~500 Ma) orogenic belts situated along the eastern side of Africa. Sediment was probably transported from exposed rock successions of these belts by large rivers like the Zambezi in the north and the Tugela in the south. The sediment was then dispersed along the coast by the south flowing Agulhas Current and northward directed long-shore current. Rivers feeding into Maputo Bay, like the Phongola, Umbeluzi and Incomati, draining the Kaapvaal Craton and Karoo Supergroup provided very little sediment to the barrier island system.

Screening sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas L.) for drought tolerance and high β-carotene content in Mozambique.

Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas, L.) is one of the important sources of carbohydrates and economic income in Mozambique. As with most of the food crops in Mozambique, it is usually produced by small-scale farmers under dryland conditions. Despite the importance of the crop, the storage root yields are still low and it is difficult to keep planting material (vines) for the next planting season. One of the major challenges to production is drought stress. Drought stress affects sweetpotato by retarding aboveground growth, reducing total root yield, percentage of dry mass, and reducing the quality of the roots as a result of the increase in damage caused by the sweetpotato weevil (Cylas formicarius). The objective of this study was to identify sweetpotato genotypes tolerant to drought particularly amongst the orange fleshed types which can be used in breeding programmes to improve the drought tolerance of genotypes grown in Mozambique. To this end, 48 genotypes were evaluated in both field and greenhouse studies conducted at Umbeluzi Research Station (26º 03’ S, 32ºC 23’ E; 12 masl) located about 30 km from Maputo city. The field trial was a three replicate, α-design with split-plots. Genotypes were the wholeplot treatment factor and irrigation levels were the sub-plot treatment factor. The three irrigation levels imposed were: nonstressed plants irrigated from planting to 120 DAP; moderately stressed, plants irrigated until 60 DAP; and severely stressed, plants irrigated until 30 DAP. In the greenhouse trial the 48 genotypes were grown in wooden boxes arranged in a two replicate, randomized complete block design. The plants were exposed to water stress from 10 DAP to the end of experiment at 60 DAP. Genotypes were significantly different for all traits, namely: survival %, vine vigour, aboveground biomass, total and commercial root yield, total fresh biomass, harvest index, β-carotene content, % dry mass, dry mass yield, incidence of sweetpotato virus disease, and incidence of weevil damage. Irrigation levels were significant for the traits: survival %, vine vigour, aboveground biomass, total and commercial root yield, total fresh biomass, harvest index, β-carotene content, % dry mass, and dry mass yield. Irrigation levels were not significant for incidence of sweetpotato virus disease and incidence of weevil damage. The genotypes x irrigation levels interaction was significant for: total and commercial root yield, and incidence of weevil damage; and not significant for: survival %, vine vigour, aboveground biomass, total fresh biomass, harvest index, β-carotene content, % dry mass composition, dry mass yield and incidence of sweetpotato virus disease. The mean dry mass yields across irrigation levels of the national breeding lines and introduced genotypes were higher than the landrace genotypes. Most of the national breeding lines had higher β-carotene content than the introduced and landrace genotypes. The landrace genotypes had relatively higher % dry mass composition compared to the national breeding lines. The stress tolerance index (STI) separated the 48 sweetpotato genotypes evaluated in the field trial into three groups: drought tolerant (high STI); moderate drought tolerant (intermediate STI); and drought sensitive (low STI). Under moderate stress, yield potential (Yp) and yield in a stress environment (Ys) were highly significant, positively correlated with Mean productivity (MP), Geometric mean productivity (GMP), Stress tolerance index (STI) and Tolerance index (TOL). Under severe stress the same correlations were reported. Under moderate and severe stress, the correlation between stress tolerance index (STI) and Stress susceptibility index (SSI) was significant and negative. In the greenhouse trial, differences between genotypes in vine length increment, vine diameter increment, leaf width increment and number of nodes vine-1 were significant (P<0.05). Vine length, vine diameter, leaf width and length increments either increased or were reduced due to water stress. Less than 10% increment in vine length (between 25 and 50 DAP) was recorded in MGCl01, Atacama, Cordner, Beauregard, and CN1448-49. Higher than 40% vine length increment was recorded in Jonathan and UNK-Malawi, Naspot, MUSG0614-24, Resisto, K566632, Tainung64, Ejumula and MUSG0623-09. Vine diameter decreased in Manhissane and MUSG0616-18. No change in leaf length in Tacna and Jonathan and in leaf width in Xihetamakote and Resisto-Nairobi was recorded. The longest petiole length at 30 DAP was recorded by Tacna and the shortest by Nhacutse4. The longest internode length was recorded in 199062.1. Similar to petiole length, Nhacuste4 reported the shortest internode length. The highest number of primary vines was recorded by MUSG0608-61 and lowest by Beauregard. A value chain analysis of the Mezimbite indigenous forestry project : towards sustainable economic development for communities while combating deforestation in Mozambique.

Tropical deforestation threatens both the livelihoods of people that inhabit forests and the environment. The Mezimbite sustainable indigenous forestry project in Mozambique aims to develop livelihoods and use community forest resources in a sustainable manner by harvesting timber and non-timber resources at an environmentally sustainable rate. The project brings together a private company, two communities that own forest resources, workers from other communities, and funding from external sources. Livelihoods are developed by transforming forest resources into a wide range of products such as furniture, doorframes, bracelets and household goods. A value chain analysis of two of the projects most important product categories in terms of revenues, designer bracelets and furniture, reveals that the project captures important economic rents that give it the potential to become economically sustainable. The design and training skills of the project leader and the skills of turners and carpenters (human resource rents), combined with access to high quality hardwoods (natural resource rents) result in quality products of unique design that can be sold in high-end markets in Europe, the US and South Africa. These products can realise high margins because they are competitive with similar products that are less environmentally or socially friendly. The project also has access to marketing agents at reduced cost (marketing rents), while the personal network of the project leader (relational rents) brings in private customers to buy furniture, interior decorators who resell furniture, bracelet retailers, and a marketing agent. The environmental and social character of the project helps to secure the cooperation of the agents, gives the project access to grants from foundations and NGOs (financial rents), and it ensures access to niche markets of environmentally conscious consumers in Europe and the US. Unfortunately, there are no infrastructural rents as the project site is not connected to the electricity grid, and no fixed telephone, fax or email is on site. It is also far away from markets, which leads to long delivery times and high transport cost, especially for furniture. A number of recommendations are made in order to increase sales and strengthen the project's economic sustainability. These recommendation relate to functional, product and process upgrades of the value chain. Firstly, the project should consider bringing its furniture into retail stores to reduce dependency on relational rents, which requires development of a standard furniture collection with a catalogue. This also requires stocking furniture closer to the markets in the US, Europe and South Africa to reduce transportation cost en delivery times. Secondly, the bracelet collection should be reduced to small limited editions that change every twice a year. Thirdly contact with customers, agents and retailers should be improved, for instance by establishing a small office in the nearby city of Beira with email, fax and telephone and of a dedicated sales person. The amount of wood that can be harvested under the sustainable management plan is large enough to deal with an increase of furniture and bracelet production. However, it remains unclear whether the economic benefits are large enough for the community to keep their support for the project. Only a small percentage of the sales revenues of the bracelets and furniture flow towards members of the forest communities and most jobs are created outside the community. I recommend that the project consider employing more people in the Mezimbite Forest Centre from the participating communities. In spite of low employment rates, community members receive fruit trees from the nursery, degraded woodlands are reforested and income is derived from the sales of the other products manufactured in the project. An increase in sales and production would lead to higher benefits and more employment. A recommendation is that further monitoring and evaluation of the project take place to ensure dual goals of economic development and sustainable use of forest resources is achieved. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2006.

Effectiveness of agricultural micro-credit projects for poverty reduction : a case study of the Marrambajane In-kind Project in Chokwe District, Mozambique.

This study addressed a gap in knowledge about the outcomes of in-kind agricultural microcredit projects on the welfare of the poor and ultra-poor smallholders. This research focused on an in-kind agricultural micro-credit project in Marrambajane village (Ch6kwe district, in southern Mozambique). Within the framework of the project, beneficiaries were given in-kind credit (seeds, fertilizer) to grow cash crops (tomatoes, onion, cabbage). To participate in the project farmers joined an Association which was part of a larger Union of Associations. The study measured the changes in material wellbeing of beneficiaries and development of social capital as a result of participation in the project. Material wellbeing was measured through income gene~ation and acquisition of assets through participation in the project. In addition, the sustainability of the intervention was also assessed. The study made use of a case study design adopting both quantitative and qualitative methods. Multiple data collection tools were used to collect data. Participatory methods were used to develop a wellbeing ranking of beneficiary households. A questionnaire was administered with beneficiaries (farmers) as the primary unit of analysis; this was used primarily to measure acquisition of assets and levels of trust in Association and Union. Data on amount of income generated and credit owed was compiled from the project archives. Observation was used to assess condition ofinfrastructure and equipment. The microfinance triangle model was used to evaluate whether the project had achieved poverty outreach, improved the welfare of participants and was financially sustainable. Findings showed that the project led to slight increase of income and household asset value. This increase of income and growth of household asset value was exclusively observed during the period of project implementation (2001-2004), and one year after the end of sponsorship (2005). While participating in the project, households ranked as 'rich' and 'middle' received 1.2 times more credit and 1.6 times more income was generated compared with 'poor' and 'poorest' households. While there is no evidence of a difference in average median number of items bought in each of the wellbeing categories, the monetary value of the items acquired appeared to correlate with household wellbeing categories. The project was successful in building social capital through formation and legalisation of Associations integrated into one fanners Union, the Union of Association Uamechinga. However, high levels of trust between the beneficiaries and project technicians and between the beneficiaries and the Union management team were not achieved. The project collapsed in late 2005. Based on my analysis I argue this occurred because of multiple factors. Firstly, the emphasis on farming tomatoes, a high return but unpredictable cash crop, was problematic. A more effective project design would include production of tomatoes in combination with more reliable crops such as rice and beans. Secondly, the project enforcement of loan repayments was very weak and there was extensive subsidisation of operational and administrative costs. Analysis suggested that the project was distributing income above the real profit generated by the fanners. It is recommended that future projects implement direct or indirect methods to achieve stronger levels of repayment. Thirdly, the project's irrigation system was inadequate. In spite of the fanners recommending a furrow system an unsustainable piped system was implemented. This reflects lack of communication between project technicians and the community during the project design, and partly explains the poor level oftrust between the project staff and fanners. I argue that to ensure sustainability of in-kind micro-credit projects like the Marrambajane case, stronger capacity and infrastructure must be in place before state and donor assistance is withdrawn. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2008.

This dissertation outlines a comprehensive study about Zambezia Agricultural Development Project Phase 2 (ZADP 2). It examines its impact and its relationship to the targeted communities. The study analyses development in the targeted areas and presents an outline of the activities, its conceptual basis, its approaches and its goals. It explores the impact of poverty alleviation and livelihoods between households and their strategies to overcome the food insecurity through on-farm and off-farm income generation. ZADP 2 applied several strategies to help the communities in their struggle against poverty and vulnerability. It was assumed that rural people do not improve their surplus because of the backward technology they use in their farming. To resolve this problem ZADP 2 realized that improved seeds would enable rural people to deal with improved agriculture through an increase in agricultural output, which would increase the quality of life of many. This led to the introduction of improved seeds, which were multiplied on the peasants' farms. It also introduced livestock restocking component. Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) is an approach put in place in order to involve the targeted communities to actively participate in development process aimed at them. It is recognized in this dissertation that Participatory Rural Appraisal and problem-solving are crucial to successful outcomes, and that, as a result, PRA approach is a fundamental instrument in motivating the targeted people to be fully involved in prioritising their problems and needs. This dissertation also remarks that PRA can succeed if development practitioners are committed to local problem-solving by not overturning real local needs and not disregarding the local knowledge. Several African and international development models were reviewed in order to see how the applied development has been undertaken and how it can be applied in Mozambique. This dissertation shows that the assumptions held during the ZADP's implementation that all stakeholders involved such as facilitators, livestock promoters, the government and the smallholders would guarantee the sustainability of the project were merely an assumption.
