Population structure of coastal cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki clarki) in the Muck Creek Basin, Washington

The relationship of coastal cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki clarki) populations in the Muck Creek basin, a 238 km�� southern Puget Sound stream basin in western Washington, was examined using starch gel electrophoresis and meristic analysis. Coastal cutthroat trout were collected from six sites throughout the basin including tributaries, portions of the mainstem, and a lake. Four sites contained only resident trout, the lower mainstem contained resident and anadromous trout, and the lake contained only mature anadromous trout based on size and appearance. Patterns of allelic and meristic variation suggest a significant structuring and separation of coastal cutthroat trout populations in the basin. The lake population was distinguished from the other populations by significant differences in allele frequencies and meristic characters. The other sites grouped more closely together with significant variation among and between sites meristically and at several loci. / Graduation date: 1996

EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF WEEP BERM SYSTEMS FOR TREATING RUNOFF FROM A HORSE MUCK COMPOSTING OPERATION

Two contour weep berms systems were designed and implemented to evaluate their performance at mitigating water quantity problems from a horse muck composting operation. The field-scale study focused on the hydrologic response of a standard contour weep berm and a modified contour weep berm. The modified contour weep berm incorporated a woodchip trench upgradient of a typical standard contour weep design. Monitoring occurred from July 2011 through spring 2012. Eight storm events produced measureable runoff for the standard contour weep berm; however, only five storm events produced measurable runoff for the modified contour weep berm. The largest storm event occurred on November 27, 2012 with rainfall depth of 49.0 mm. This storm event generated a total runoff volume of 183.1 m3 and 188.5 m3 for the standard and modified contour weep berms, respectively. All runoff produced from the storm events during the monitoring period was completely detained and infiltrated. No runoff was released from the horse muck composting facility through the passive dewatering system to down-gradient vegetative filter strips during the monitoring period.

Die erreichte Zerkleinerung und die Form des Haufwerks sind die beiden wichtigsten Ergebnisse einer Tagebausprengung. Schnelle Informationen über die Eigenschaften des gesprengten Haufwerks ermöglichen eine zielgerichtete und effiziente Produktionsplanung und Kenntnisse über die erreichte Zerkleinerung ermöglichen außerdem Anpassungen in der weiteren Zerkleinerungskette. Durch den Einsatz von UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) gemeinsam mit modernen Algorithmen aus dem Bereich Computer Vision und des maschinellen Lernens soll eine schnelle Erfassung und Interpretation der Daten bei gleichzeitiger Integration in die herkömmlichen betrieblichen Abläufe ermöglicht werden, und außerdem können Schwächen bodengebundener Systeme hinsichtlich Vollständigkeit und Repräsentativität umgangen werden. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird einerseits auf den relevanten Stand des Wissens und der Technik eingegangen und andererseits wird die verfolgte Stoßrichtung bei der Systementwicklung dargelegt sowie erste Arbeiten präsentiert. / The fragmentation and the shape of the muck pile are the two major outcomes of open pit mine and quarry blasts. Fast information about the muck pile properties will help to improve the production scheduling and furthermore this information could be used to optimize the blasting patterns of future production blasts. The combined use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and modern machine learning and computer vision systems offers a new way of acquiring spatial data to determine on-site fragment size distribution, while at the same time enabling integration into common work flows and mitigating the weaknesses of ground-based systems with special regard to completeness and representativeness. In the present paper, we will discuss the relevant related work, present the planned path for system development and give examples of first work.

Fertilizer Studies as Conducted on Muck Soil in Sanpete County, Utah

The reclamation of muck soil is a new development in the state of Utah. Knowledge concerning the various properties and requirements of the newly-drained area in Sanpete County, Utah, is extremely limited. A need for fundamental information concerning this type of soil was the basis for the establishment of an experimental farm in this region. The fact that most organic soils respond to mineral fertilizers soon after they have been reclaimed was an important reason for starting fertilizer work on this soil as soon as it was possible to do so. This thesis reports some of the fertilizer work being conducted on the farm. The soil on which the experimental work is being conducted seems to be fairly representative of an area of about 6500 acres located near the south end of the Sanpete Valley. The muck soil has been developed here in what was originally a shallow lake, with an impervious blue clay as the bottom. The soil was formed by the growth of marsh plants, the remains of which have accumulated and have been preserved in the water. From the time the valley was settled with white people up until 1926, the area had been used for the production of native hay and for pasture. The native sedge sod was first broken up in this region in the fall of 1926. The drainage of the area was started in the fall of 1925 and consisted of constructing canals around the project to control spring flood water. A central drain was installed, through the bottom of the area, with sufficient small laterals to properly drain the soil. The development of the area for at least two years after breaking the sod has consisted of pulverizing the coarse sod, allowing sufficient time for the roots to decay, so that crops could be grown.

Dammed If You Don't: The Palmertown Tragedy of 1924 in Collective Memory

On December 24, 1924, a wall of water and alkali muck engulfed Palmertown, a small community in Saltville, Virginia. Houses were swept away and by the time all of the bodies were pulled from the wreckage, the death toll had reached 19-an immense loss for the tight-knit community. A dam, owned by Mathieson Alkali Works, loomed approximately 100 feet above Palmertown, keeping at bay the chemical muck produced by the company plants. Despite the extent of the damage, the flood is largely absent from discourse and no historical marker exists to memorialize the tragedy. Furthermore, Palmertown and neighboring Henrytown were expunged in the mid-twentieth century when Olin Corporation rebuilt the dam overtop of the town sites. Stories of the event have been passed down for generations, immortalizing a specific story of the disaster in the memories of many local residents of Saltville, so why is it not memorialized? The cultural framework of Saltville determined how and why this disaster and others have been remembered or forgotten. In 1924, Saltville residents were accustomed to tragic events; to some extent these events were seen as part and parcel of life in a company town in Appalachia. Yet, nearly a century after the tragedy, the process of unearthing of difficult events can illuminate much of the community's collective history and restore the fragmented communal memory. The memorialization of the Palmertown Tragedy of 1924 establishes a framework for acknowledging an arduous past and identifying the roots of a town's resilience. / Master of Arts

CHARACTERIZATION OF TWO BIOCHARS DERIVED FROM HORSE MUCK AND THEIR ABILITY TO REDUCE PATHOGEN TRANSPORT IN SOIL

Biochars have been created and characterized from a variety livestock manure biomass including poultry, dairy, and swine. However, no research has been conducted on the physical and chemical makeup of biochar pyrolyzed from horse muck. Two horse muck derived biochars containing either straw (HS) or woodchip (HW) bedding were pyrolyzed at 700°C and characterized for their physical and chemical properties. Tests revealed both biochars had high alkalinity, moderate specific conductivity, and low surface area as compared to other biochars in the literature. HS contained more mineral structures than HW. Scanning electron microscopy presented differences in particle shape, size, and presence of xylemic structures. The chemical makeup of both biochars was similar, while HW contained about 23% more C than HS while HS contained more calcium and magnesium. The effect of biochar-amended soils on the transport of two Escherichia coli isolates was studied using saturated soil columns. The results show that HW significantly reduced the transport of isolate SP2B07 over the Soil control, and reduced the transport of isolate SP2B07 more than isolate SP1H01. Horse muck biochars may show promise in reducing bacterial transport though agricultural soils.

My thesis is focused on process preparation and building construction technology of primary lining road tunnel, implemented in city part of Troja in the capital city Prague. Specifically it is a part of tunnel complex Blanka. The name of this part is Kralovská obora. If the all tunnel parts are built this tunnel complex Blanka can be complemented to already opened tunnels Zlíchovský, Mrázovka and Strahovský which are the part of city traffic circle. This technology preparation includes schedules and financial plans of the building, technological prescription for the primary tunnel lining, safety plan, control and trial/test plans, environmental plan, project of construction site, design of the main working machines, items budget of the north tunnel tube, coordination situation plan with wider relationships transport routes and technical report of building technological project.
