A Comparison of the Validity and Reliability of Kincannon's and Hugo's MMPI Short Forms in a Clinical Population

Holmes, Robert Eugene 05 1900 (has links)
To meet the need of making clinical evaluations in the most efficient way, many scales and short forms of the MMPI have been developed. A review of the literature indicated that the Mini-Mult devised by Kincannon (1967) and the Short Form by Hugo (1971a) were the best short forms of the MMPI which have been constructed. The purpose of this study was to determine which of these short forms would most accurately predict the standard MMPI in a clinical population.

Prisoner classification by behavioral, biographical, and psychometric analysis in cross-validation of the Mini-mult prisoner questionnaire

Holmes, Robert Eugene 12 1900 (has links)
The classification of adult criminal populations for training, treatment, and security purposes has been time-consuming and expensive. The main purpose of this study was to develop a classification system which considered a wide variety of behavioral, biographical, and psychometric variables and yet was efficient in terms of time and money.

Relationship Between Personality Characteristics of Incarcerated Juvenile Delinquents as Measured by the MMPQ and Specific Behavior Criteria

McCurley, Roger W. 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the present study was to determine whether or not significant correlations could be obtained between raw scores on fifty-three scales of the Mini-Mult Prison Questionnaire (MMPQ), a personality test, and nine selected behavior variables for a group of thirty-two institutionalized male delinquents. A correlation matrix using Pearson's r revealed that seven MMPQ scales correlated at the p = .05 level of significance with the behavior criteria. Thus, four of the five hypotheses formulated were supported. However, caution was emphasized in interpreting the results due to sample size, sample homogeneity, and the dissimilarity of the adolescent sample from the adult prison population on which the MMPQ was developed.

The Diagnostic Suitability of Goldberg's Rule for the Mini-Mult

Roberts, Dan Haynes 12 1900 (has links)
This study was undertaken to determine whether the Mini-Mult is able to function as well as the MMPI for a limited clinical purpose, the discrimination of psychosis and neurosis by Goldberg's rule. The smaller size of the Mini-Mult (71 items) allows conservation of time .and energy by subjects and professionals. Thirty male residents of the Austin State Hospital completed two standard MMPIs and one oral Mini-Mult. A fourth set of scores was obtained by extracting Mini-Mult from the first MMPI. Correlations and tests of significance were computed for raw scores and Goldberg's index scores. Results indicate no significant differences in the discrimination of psychosis and neurosis between the MMPI and the Mini-Mult.

Curcumin/Melatonin Hybrids as Neuroprotective Agents for Alzheimer's disease

Saathoff, John 01 January 2016 (has links)
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder and the leading cause of dementia, affecting ~5.2 million Americans. Current FDA approved medications provide mainly symptomatic relief and there are no agents available to delay or cure this disease. Multiple factors such as amyloid-β aggregates, dyshomeostasis of biometals, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation have been implicated in the development of AD. Even though significant advances have been made in understanding the mechanisms leading to AD, the exact etiology still remains elusive. Given AD’s multifactorial nature, a multifunctional strategy of small molecule design would help to identify novel chemical templates. Recently our lab has developed hybrid molecules of curcumin and melatonin that exhibited potent neuroprotective ability in various AD models. Further modifications identified a lead compound with potent neuroprotective and antioxidative activity in MC65 cells, while also establishing the hybrid strategy as a viable approach in providing unique chemotypes with novel pharmacology. Further preliminary biological studies suggest that the lead is orally available and exhibits multifunctional properties both in vitro and in vivo on AD pathologies, thus strongly encouraging further structural examination. Herein, we report the structural exploration of this chemical template through structure-activity relationship studies at three domains: the phenyl domain, α,β-unsaturated β-ketone amide domain, and the indole domain. Collectively, the results show that the chemical space around the curcumin portion doesn’t favor electronic or steric/hydrophobic interactions, but might favor pi-pi (π-π) and hydrogen-bond interactions. Additionally, the α,β-unsaturated β-ketone amide domain is not as important as the linearity of the β-ketone acetamide. Moreover, the results indicate that a free rotatable β-OH might be the actual moiety that is important for the observed biological activity through favorable hydrogen bonds. Finally, steric interactions are not favored in the chemical space surrounding the indole nitrogen, suggesting that hydrogen bond interactions are required for the observed neuroprotective activity. Conversely, a hydrogen bond acceptor is necessary at the 5-position of the indole ring and bulky substitutions can be accommodated, with restrictions, suggesting steric tolerance and hydrophobic interactions at this position. These modifications have yielded a series of novel compounds that are capable of modifying AD pathology while shedding further light onto the chemical scaffold thus warranting future investigations into the development, optimization, and characterization of these curcumin/melatonin hybrids as potential treatments for AD.

Desenvolvimento de sistemas de automação da manufatura usando arquiteturas orientadas a serviço e sistemas multi-agentes

Peixoto, João Alvarez January 2012 (has links)
The industrial manufacturing requirements indicate a need for reconfiguration and reprogramming of process flow in order to meet changes in the product with the changing market requirements. These changes imply changes in the manufacturing process, which in many cases, means changing the layout, reprogram controllers, modify interfaces and couplings etc. The production lot sizes are getting smaller and the variety of products in the same line has increased. This makes the preparation time of manufacturing devices crucial factor in the formation of the final cost. Devices with more autonomy, able to manage themselves and allow a rapid exchange of features are to be desired in a manufacturing environment, where conventional systems with centralized scheduling, sequence defined in the central controller and array of features still fall short. Service orientation is a concept that proposes to decentralize the control and disposition of components in order to regroup virtually and form new devices with new features, optimizing investment, resource and production time. In this approach the devices start to act as agents of manufacturing, in a universe of multi-agents, who negotiate among themselves the process required, providing care for the product variation and having a greater number of features, which reduces the switching time processes. A case study of system-oriented services, under a multi-agent platform is proposed in this work, aiming to provide tools for performance analysis and potential of the concept.

Modeling multi-attribute utility theory with object-oriented programming

Wang, Chen 12 January 2010 (has links)
System complexity has continued to increase with the development and application of new technologies. This increased complexity has created great concerns among people about the potential impact of a system on its ecological environment when considering such as plants, wildlife and clean air. A complete awareness of the potential impact requires a thorough understanding of how a system interacts with its ecological environment, and the results are dependent on the expertise of the engineer who is responsible for the design of the system and the analyst who evaluates the system Due to the complexity of these interactions and the difficulty in measuring the appropriate cause-and-effect relationships, a system's impact on its ecological environment has not received due attention. The above complexity and difficulty have led to two deficiencies in the current research of the system's environmental impact. One is the insufficient evaluation of its qualitative attributes. The other is an unstructured evaluation process where the analyst has to rely on qualitative attributes as major inputs while his/her expertise could not be modeled. As a consequence, the current research and evaluation process is deficient because of biases and lack of clarity. This report seeks to instill the necessary clarity into the decision-making process by structuring the decision maker's subjective knowledge. It is concluded that subjective preferences can be quantified and evaluated through utility function assessment. Alternatives are ranked and a final choice is made based on their utility. The modeling process described herein is made a lot more efficient and economical because of the computer software that integrates the assessment mechanisms into a user-friendly operational environment. After the deficiencies in the current evaluation process are identified, possible solutions are explored. The effectiveness of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), Multi-attribute Value Theory (MA VT), and Multi-attribute Utility Theory (MAUT) are compared. MAUT is the preferred approach based on solution requirements. / Master of Science
