"Transformations" is a three-movement work that is approximately 17'30" in duration and is scored for full orchestra. The piece is a tone poem and employs extended tonal pitch content. Each of the three movements is based upon a cell of planing intervals: the cell of I. Molto Moderato consists of two parallel fifths played by the double basses; the cell of II. Adagio is three intervals (a seventh, third, and fourth) sounded first by the violins; and the cell of III. Allegretto is four intervals (a sixth followed by three fourths) played by the bassoons, violas, and double basses. The planing motifs, which evoke both medieval and contemporary popular styles, recur throughout the piece with varied pitch content (including inversions) and in a variety of orchestrations (e.g. in "transformations," as implied by the title).

Methods and ideas for the creation of ‘transparent’ music in the classroom The aims of this port-folio are as follows; To provide a coherent sequence of pieces and methods which can be used to create music in an educational context and also encourage students and teachers to develop their own creativity. To provide pieces which develop student’s confidence in their own ability to create music in a variety of ways including composition, improvisation and creative leadership. To provide exercises and pieces which help to develop the listening and appreciation skills essential for ensemble musicmaking. To provide methods that enable the creation of ‘transparent music’. This is music in which the some, or all, of the decision making involved in the creation of a piece is accessible and apparent to an audience during its performance. This submission consists of a teaching book containing thirteen pieces/exercises, instructions giving guidance on their possible use in a teaching context and recorded examples. Also included are separate instructions where appropriate for the use of pieces in a concert or other non-educational setting and two essays giving context and background information on the ideas behind the pieces.

Sinfonietta is a work of about 18 minutes for orchestra with an instrumentation of 3 flutes, 2 oboes, 3 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, 4 timpani, percussion, harps, piano and strings. Three players are required for the percussion battery. The work is in four movements: Prelude, Theme and Variations, Largo and Finale. Movement I is in a tri-partite design. In the second movement, the theme is first enunciated by a solo violoncello in its high register followed by seven variations in the orchestra. In Movement III, there are three brief sections plus a longer coda which links to the Finale, the last movement of the Sinfonietta. This movement ends the work with a double fugal section where many of the important features used in the work recur. The movements are made coherent by means of cyclic treatment of the material.
