Electromagnetic aftereffects of near-death experiences.Nouri, Farnoosh Massoudian 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this quantitative study was first to investigate the comparative incidence of electromagnetic aftereffects (EMEs) during the past year among near-death experiencers (NDErs), people who experienced a close brush with death without an NDE (CBrs), and people who reported never having experienced a close brush with death (LCErs). The second purpose was to investigate a possible change in EME incidence among the three groups before and after a critical life event. The third purpose was to investigate the relationship between the reported overall depth and specific components of the subjective experiences of people who have had a close brush with death -- NDErs and CBrs -- and their reported incidence of EMEs. I used the Near-Death Experience Scale (Greyson, 1983), and developed the Close Brush with Death Question form, Life Changing Event Question form, and Electromagnetic Effects Questionnaire for this study. The final sample included 36 NDErs, 20 CBrs, and 46 LCErs. The results of this study firmly supported more reported problems with EM devices experienced by NDErs compared to CBrs or LCErs. Especially with respect to EM devices such as lights and cell phones, as well as the emotional state of individuals affecting EM devices, this study showed more reports of problems with these devices between before and after NDEs for NDErs compared to before and after a life changing event for LCErs. Moreover, findings of this study showed a correlation between the depth of NDEs and EMEs. This study has important implications for counselors working with NDErs. Findings from this study show that NDErs have a strong possibility of experiencing electromagnetic interferences when close to electromagnetic devices such as cell phones, computers, lights, and watches after their NDEs. This phenomenon can be a stressor in the lives of NDErs and their families and friends. As some participants in this study indicated, information about EMEs can reduce NDErs' stress. Thus, counselors can use information from this study to psychoeducate their NDEr clients and work with them to develop strategies to cope with EMEs, thereby hopefully reducing the stress of EME-related NDE aftereffects.

Narratological techniques in the modern Gulf novel| A case study of the narrative works of Fawziyya Shuwaish al-S?limAlsaad, Anwar A. J. A. 28 June 2016 (has links)

Narratological Techniques in the Modern Gulf Novel: A case study of the narrative works of Fawziyya Shuwaish al-Sālim Narratology began to take shape as a discipline in 1966 when the French journal Communications printed a special issue titled "The structural analysis of narrative." The term narratology (“narratologie” in French) itself was coined three years later by one of the contributors to that issue, Tzvetan Todorov, in his subsequent structuralist manifesto, Grammaire du Décaméron, which was published in 1969.

In this dissertation, I attempt to analyze the narrative texts of the Kuwaiti author Fawziyya Shuwaish al-Sālim, which include five fiction novels and one biography-autobiography, by applying modern narratological techniques suggested by leading narratologists, mainly Mieke Bal. My aim is to provide a systematic and objective assessment of her narrative techniques and style in an attempt to gauge her contribution to the Gulf novel and, perhaps, the modern Arab novel as a whole based on her use of technical and thematic aspects.

Near Point of Convergence : A Comparison of Four Different Target typesBerglund Pilgrim, Caroline January 2010 (has links)

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if there were any differences between four different target types when measuring the near point of convergence in adults.

Methods and Material: The near point of convergence was measured in 35 subjects with a visual acuity of at least 1.0 (6/6) in each eye and without any strabismus. The targets used were: the tip of a pen, an accommodative target, the RAF line target and a penlight viewed through red-green filters. Both break and recovery points were assessed for the different techniques. Each target was used twice in consecutive order. The line target from RAF ruler was copied on to a small plastic ruler in order to be able to use the same ruler for measuring the results. All subjects were fitted with their best correction in the trial frame after a complete refraction. The measurements were taken to the nearest 0.25cm.

Results: There was no difference found between NPC break values for the different target types in the control group. The NPC values were found to be 5.0/7.4 in the control group and 10.8/18.2 in the anomalous group. The accommodative target was found to give more remote values (11.5cm) than expected in comparison to the other targets in the anomalous group.

Conclusion: In patients with normal NPC, the measurements can be taken with line target or Acc. target. Patients with receded NPC values should be evaluated with penlight and red-green glasses or at least twice with the tip of a pen.

Source Localization via Near Field Signal ProcessingVarshney, Vivek C 11 February 2009 (has links)
This thesis is in support of the Precision Personnel Locator (PPL) project being conducted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). The overall goal of the PPL project is to locate firemen and other emergency personnel in buildings using Radio Frequency (RF) techniques. The aspiration is to prevent a tragedy similar to the Worcester Cold Storage fire of 1999. The Mantenna homing wand is a spinoff of the PPL system which uses the Near Field properties of Very Low Frequency (VLF band) waves. The Mantenna has been used to successfully demonstrate the ability to locate targets inside harsh RF environments and other radio opaque environments where normal radiation field based systems have degraded performance, such as commercial, industrial, and apartment buildings. This thesis builds upon the Mantenna rescue device by construction of a transmitter subsystem which is physically smaller than the previous version by redesign of the compact VLF antenna. Additionally, exploitation of the approach used by the Mantenna for homing purposes is explored for full location estimation. This work provides the theoretical background and proof of concept test of a Near Field based location system. Simulation and test results are compared for a minimal configuration involving a single receiver.

Near-rings and their modulesBerger, Amelie Julie 18 July 2016 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Science, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 1991. / After an introduction defining basic structutral aspects of near-rings, this report examines how the ring-theoretic notions of generation and cogeneration can be
extended from modules over a ring to modules over a near-ring. Chapter four examines matrix near-rings and connections between the J2 and JS radicals of the near-ring and the corresponding matrix near-ring.
By extending the concepts of generation and cogeneration from the ring modules
to near-ring modules we are investigating how important distribution and an abelian
additive structure are to these two concepts. The concept of generation faces the
obstacle that the image of a near-ring module homomorphism is not necessarily a
subrnodule of the image space but only a subgroup, while the sum of two subgroups need not even be a subgroup. In chapter two, generation trace and socle are defined for near-ring modules and these ideas are linked with those of the essential
and module-essential subgroups. Cogeneration, dealing with kernels which are always
submodules proved easier to generalise. This is discussed in chapter three
together with the concept of the reject, and these ideas are Iinked to the J1/2
and J2 radicals. The duality of the ring theory case is lost. The results are less
simple than in the ring theory case due to the different types of near-ring module
substructures which give rise to several Jacobson-type radicals.
A near-ring of matrices can be obtained from an arbitrary near-ring by
regarding each rxr matrix as a mapping from Nr to Nr where N is the near-ring
from which entries are taken. The argument showing that the near-ring is
2-semisimple if and only if the associated near-ring of matrices is 2-semisimple
is presented and investigated in the case of s-semisimplicity.
Questions arising from this report are presented in the final chapter.
