The purpose of this mission is not only to collect valuable scientific and geological data, but to also determine the value of the asteroid’s materials for possible mining and exploitation [2], [3]. The purpose of this paper is to detail frequency allocation issues and to determine possible return (space to Earth) data rates associated with deep space communications with the NEAP spacecraft.

Synthesis of Novel Fluorescent Benzothiazole Cyanine Dyes as Potential Imaging Agents

Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging has emerged as an attractive non-invasive approach for direct visualization of diseases which depends on the development of stable, highly specific and sensitive optical probes. The NIR region of the electronic spectrum offers a reduction in the background autofluorescence and an increase in the tissue penetration depth. Cyanine dyes have often been considered promising contrast optic agents owing to their photophysical properties. Herein the synthesis of various penta- and heptamethine benzothiazole cyanine dyes has been described and their in vivo imaging efficacy was determined. Varying functionalities on the benzothiazole aromatic ring and changing substituents on the benzothiazolium nitrogen atom reflected subsequent changes in the imaging pattern and have resulted in the development of promising brain targeting agents.

Design and Implementation of NFC-based gym mobile app

This report investigates the technical and economic viability of introducing a Near Field Communication (NFC) client system in a gym environment. The system aims to aid the customers with logging their workout, retrieving information regarding exercises as well as enhancing the attendance control for both staff and customers. To identify what information to be presented, the most important quality factors and what functionalities are most desired, an exploratory case study was conducted. The study showed that there is a discrepancy between the desire to log ones workout and actually doing it. Most people want to keep track of how they workout, but despite the wide variety of workout applications on the market, they choose not to use them. The main concern expressed was that the logging needs to be fast and easy, indicating that the existing apps do not fulfill the ease of use desired. The system presented in this report is coupled to the gym where NFC tags pair an exercise to its corresponding logger and information in the application. The ability for the gym to track its customers’ workout habits is a rare feature that provides several economic benefits such as targeted advertisement, better maintenance control and new customer services analyzing their workout. For the system to be effective the customers need to use the system and log their workout, therefore it needs to be supported by the major mobile platforms. To accommodate this a hybrid platform approach using PhoneGap was used. This approach allows for development in one language that translates into native embedded web applications. At the time of writing Apple’s latest models do include the hardware for NFC communication. However, it is not possible to develop a custom NFC application for iPhone yet. By adopting the hybrid approach there is no need to create a whole new app when they do release the rights to do so. In conclusion, the technical viability of the NFC based system comes with the tradeoffs of dealing with the lack of standards of a new technology and being early on the market with a new feature. This calls for some custom solutions, since each platform adopts their own way of NFC implementation, but is manageable. The economic aspects are tied to the use of the system where the ease of use is the key factor for the customers. The end user tests indicate that NFC provides that small advantage over traditional workout applications needed to make logging attractive.

FIRST RESULTS FROM THE RAPID-RESPONSE SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC CHARACTERIZATION OF NEAR-EARTH OBJECTS USING UKIRT

Using the Wide Field Camera for the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT), we measure the near-infrared colors of near-Earth objects (NEOs) in order to put constraints on their taxonomic classifications. The rapid-response character of our observations allows us to observe NEOs when they are close to the Earth and bright. Here we present near-infrared color measurements of 86 NEOs, most of which were observed within a few days of their discovery, allowing us to characterize NEOs with diameters of only a few meters. Using machine-learning methods, we compare our measurements to existing asteroid spectral data and provide probabilistic taxonomic classifications for our targets. Our observations allow us to distinguish between S-complex, C/X-complex, D-type, and V-type asteroids. Our results suggest that the fraction of S-complex asteroids in the whole NEO population is lower than the fraction of ordinary chondrites in the meteorite fall statistics. Future data obtained with UKIRT will be used to investigate the significance of this discrepancy.

The Green Movement of 2009 was a moment where the Iranians took to the streets and protested for democracy. This is nothing new, throughout the whole 20th century gave Iranian people many different options of their country. This thesis examines those moments and differentiates the Green Movement as an event that is unique in that it has not yet led to top-down reforms. Previous literature has yet to incorporate the Green Movement in contemporary analysis of Iranian history.

Complex Destruction: Near Eastern Antiquities and the ISIS Spectacle

Throughout 2015, the Islamic State (ISIS) was a major news story for its destruction of Ancient Near Eastern collections and heritage sites, which created a spectacle across media. The focus of ISIS’s infamous video uploaded in February of 2015 was the colossal statue of a Lamassu, which was an ancient Assyrian guard deity. By focusing on the Lamassu, this thesis aims to address the Western concept of a “cradle of civilization” and ISIS’s motivation for destroying the sculpture. I utilize Kwame Appiah’s philosophy of cosmopolitanism in order to flesh out the language in which ISIS is communicating, namely through its destruction. What becomes apparent is a complex relationship with Near Eastern antiquities, which is best understood by analyzing the motivations of local looters. To conclude, I use ISIS’s destruction in order to offer thoughts on the concept of destruction with an aim to open dialogue regarding differing cultural value systems.

An investigation into near-nativeness at the syntax-lexicon interface : evidence from Dutch learners of English

This thesis investigates whether there are differences in language comprehension and language production between highly advanced/near-native adult learners of a second language (late L2ers) and native speakers (L1ers), and if so, how they should be characterised. In previous literature (Sorace & Filiaci 2006, Sorace 2011 inter alia), nonconvergence of the near-native grammar with the native grammar has been identified as most likely to occur at the interface between syntax and another cognitive domain. This thesis focuses on grammatical and ungrammatical representations at the syntax-lexicon interface between very advanced/near-native Dutch learners of English and native speakers of English. We tested differences in syntactic knowledge representations and real-time processing through eight experiments. By syntactic knowledge representations we mean the explicit knowledge of grammar (specifically word order dependence on lexical-semantics) that a language user exhibits in their language comprehension and production, and by realtime processing we mean the language user’s ability to access implicit and explicit knowledge of grammar under time and/or memory constraints in their language comprehension and production. To test for systematic differences at the syntax-lexicon interface we examined linguistic structures in English that differ minimally in word order from Dutch depending on the presence or absence of certain lexical items and their characteristics; these were possessive structures with animate and inanimate possessors and possessums in either a prenominal or postnominal construction, preposed adverbials of location (locative inversions) followed by either unergative or unaccusative verbs, and preposed adverbials of manner containing a negative polarity item (negative inversions) or positive polarity item followed by either V2 or V3 word order. We used Magnitude Estimation Tasks and Speeded Grammaticality Judgement Tasks to test comprehension, and Syntactic Priming (with/without extra memory load) and Speeded Sentence Completion Tasks to test production. We found evidence for differences in comprehension and production between very advanced, near-native Dutch L2ers and native speakers of English, and that these differences appear to be associated with processing rather than with competence. Dutch L2ers differed from English L1ers with respect to preferences in word order of possessive structures and after preposed adverbials of manner. However, these groups did not differ in production and comprehension with respect to transitivity in locative inversions. We conclude that even among highly advanced to near-native late learners of a second language there may be non-convergence of the L2 grammar. Such non-convergence need not coincide with the L1 grammar but may rather be a result of over-applying linguistic L2 knowledge. Thus, very advanced to near-native L2ers still have access to limited (meta)linguistic resources that under time and memory constraints may result in ungrammatical language comprehension and/or production at the syntax-lexicon interface. In sum, in explaining interface phenomena, the results of this study provide evidence for a processing account over a representational account, i.e. Dutch L2ers showed they possess grammatical knowledge of the specific L2 linguistic structures in comprehension and production, but over-applied this knowledge in exceptional cases under time and/or memory pressure. We suggest that current bilingual production models focus more on working memory by including a separate memory component to such models and conducting empirical research to test its influence on L2 production and comprehension.

Synthesis and Determination of Optical Properties of Selected Pentamethine Carbocyanine Dyes

This thesis begins with a brief review about the role and importance of the small molecules containing fluorine atoms in medicine and imaging. Then, the first part of the thesis will discuss the synthesis, purification and characterization of pentamethine cyanine dyes. The structure identification of the final dyes is done by using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 19F NMR, and mass spectrometry. The studies performed after full characterization were the determination of optical and physicochemical properties. After these properties were performed, the fluorophores were evaluated to be good candidates for in vivo testing.

Hardware Control of a Near Infrared Fluorescence System : LabVIEW Programming and Evaluation

Indocyanine green (ICG) is a fluorescent dye used as an indicator in medicine and surgery. The maximum absorption wavelength of ICG is at 785 nm, while the maximum emission is around 820 nm. ICG is nontoxic and is rapidly excreted into the bile. Near infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging or spectroscopy offer new settings for seeing the blood vessels, and also in oncological applications for finding sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) to investigate if the cancer has spread from the tumor to the lymphatic system. Given the aforementioned applications, the aim of this thesis was to develop a hardware control and a user interface in LabVIEW, and to evaluate the software, as well as the instrumentation using phantom measurements.The system consisted of a spectrometer, a laser (785 ± 5 nm) for ICG excitation, optical filters, and a fiber optical probe containing five fibers for light excitation, and one for light collection. The basic LabVIEW program designed for the spectrometer was used, and additional features were added such as the recording functions, online measurements, opening of the recorded files, saving comments, and a loop was created for the laser control. Optical phantoms were prepared to model tissue for measurements using 20 % intralipid that gave μs = 298 mm−¹ at the excitation wavelength. Agar 1% w/v and ICG were added to the phantoms using different fluorophore concentrations of 2 μg/mL, 10 μg/mL, 20 μg/mL, 25 μg/mL, and 40 μg/mL. The objective was to perform controlled measurements of steady state ICG fluorescence, the dynamics of photobleaching at different concentrations, and to find the optimal ICG concentration for obtaining the maximum fluorescence intensity. The light to excite ICG fluorescence emission was provided by using a laser output power of 10.4 mW and 200 ms of integration time in the spectrometer for optimal measurements.Measurements using the different gel phantoms showed maximum fluorescence ICG concentration to be between 16 μg/mL and 20 μg/mL. Moreover, photobleaching measurements showed to be ICG concentration-dependent, where those concentrations higher than the optimal one incrementally photobleached with time after being exposed to light. Higher concentrations presented an incremental photobleaching where they first reached a maximum peak and then the intensity decayed with time. Additionally, laser reflection at 782 nm showed that the reflection increased with time ranging from 130% – 460% as the ICG photobleached to 50% of its initial value. Normalization of ICG by the laser reflection signal was investigated to compensate for the intensity variations due to the measurement parameters including the distance from the light source to the target, and the angle of inclination of the probe. The lowest ICG concentration detectable by the system was 0.05 μg/mL.In conclusion, a LabVIEW hardware control and user interface was developed for controlling the spectrometer and the laser. Several measurements were made using the different phantoms, where the optimal concentration of ICG was estimated. It was shown that ICG fluorescence intensity and photobleaching behavior were dependent on the concentration. The results gave suggestions for future experimental design. / NIRF
