Effects of Residual Feed Intake Classification on Feed Efficiency, Feeding Behavior, Carcass Traits, and Net Revenue in Angus-Based Composite Steers

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of residual feed intake (RFI) classification on performance, feed efficiency, feeding behavior and carcass traits, and to determine the relative importance of individual performance and carcass measurements on between-animal variation in net revenue of feedlot steers. Performance, feed intake and feeding behavior traits were measured in 508 Angus-based composite steers, using the GrowSafe feed-intake measurement system, while fed a high-grain diet for 70 days. Residual feed intake (RFI) was computed as actual minus expected dry matter intake (DMI) derived from regression of DMI on average daily gain (ADG) and mid-test BW0.75, and steers classified into low (n = 150), medium (n = 200) and high (n = 158) RFI groups. Following the feed-intake measurement periods, steers were fed the same diet in group pens and harvested at an average backfat thickness of 1.14 cm. Net revenue (NR) was calculated as carcass value minus feeder calf, yardage, and feed costs using 3-year average prices. Feed cost was based on actual feed consumed during the feed-intake measurement periods, and model-predicted intake adjusted for RFI during the group-feeding periods. Steers with low RFI had $48/hd lower (P < 0.0001) feed cost, $16/hd numerically higher (P = 0.29) carcass value, and $62/hd more favorable (P < 0.0001) net revenue compared to their high-RFI counterparts. Net revenue was correlated with carcass weight, marbling score, yield grade, DMI, ADG, RFI and G:F ratio where animals that consumed more feed, had higher rates of gain and were more efficient had more favorable net returns. Models predicting net revenue from performance, carcass quality, and feed efficiency traits accounted for 77% of the between-animal variation in NR. In the base model, that included all traits performance, carcass quality and feed efficiency traits explained 28, 14 and 35%, respectively, of the variation in NR. Results from this study indicate that between-animal variation in net revenue was impacted to a great extent by performance and feed efficiency, rather than carcass quality traits, in Angus-based composite steers based on average 3-year pricing scenarios.

Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo principal analisar o efeito da adoção das tecnologias utilizadas pelos produtores típicos de grãos (soja, milho e trigo) da região oeste do Paraná sobre a rentabilidades de culturas e sistemas entre os anos-safras 2007/08 e 2016/17, período que corresponde à mudança entre a baixa adoção de tecnologias modificadas geneticamente para um cenário de grande dependência e utilização. Este período também corresponde a uma mudança significativa na destinação das áreas e das culturas dentro da propriedade típica, com prioridade para o cultivo da soja no verão e incremento do cultivo de milho na 2ª safra, assim como maior utilização da área total na 2ª safra. A propriedade típica de Cascavel (PR) foi utilizada como base das informações analisadas. O ferramental utilizado se apoiou no trabalho realizado por Paiva (1975), comparando os resultados em termos de receita líquida de dois cenários produtivos específicos, um tradicional e outro moderno. A premissa é que o agricultor escolherá ou adotará a atividade e a técnica que apresentar melhor resultado e vantagem econômica. O período tradicional levou em consideração os resultados produtivos e de custos de produção das safras 2007/08, 2008/09 e 2009/10, em que a propriedade típica de Cascavel cultivava ainda um percentual alto de variedades de soja e híbridos de milho convencionais, assim como no portfólio de culturas semeava o milho na 1ª safra. A 2ª safra foi semeada com milho e trigo, mas sem ocuparem a totalidade da área disponível para o cultivo. O período moderno abrangeu os anos safras 2014/15, 2015/16 e 2016/17. Nestas safras, a propriedade típica de Cascavel (PR) passou a cultivar toda a área com soja e milho modificados geneticamente. A soja preencheu toda a área da 1ª safra e o milho a maior parte da área da 2ª safra. O trigo completou o cultivo da 2ª safra. Milho 2ª safra e trigo passaram a ocupar uma parcela maior da área disponível em 2ª safra. No geral, os resultados aqui apresentados indicaram que as receitas líquidas dos anos mais recentes (2014/15, 2015/16 e 2016/17) superaram as registradas nos anos bases de análise (2007/08, 2008/09 e 2009/10), direcionando para um contexto em que o produtor adotou técnicas com melhor benefício econômico/financeiro. / The research main objective is analyze the impact of technology\'s adoption on typical grain producers (soybean, corn and wheat) profitability on the western region of Paraná and between the years 2007/08 and 2016/17, a period that corresponds a change from low genetically modified technologies adoption to a scenario of high dependence and utilization. This period also corresponds to a significant change in the allocation of areas and crops within the typical farm, with priority for summer soybean production and increment of corn cultivation as second crop, as well as greater utilization of the total area in the second crop. The typical farm of Cascavel (PR) was used as the basis to the analyzed information. The tool used was based on Paiva (1975), comparing results in terms of net revenue of two specific production scenarios, one traditional and other modern. The premise was that the farmer will choose or adopt the activity and technique that present the best result and economic advantage. The traditional period considers productivity and production costs of the 2007/08, 2008/09 and 2009/10 harvests where Cascavel\'s typical farm still cultivated a high percentage of conventional soybean varieties and corn hybrids as well as portfolio of crops sowed corn in the first crop. The second crop was sown with maize and wheat, but did not occupy the entire area available for cultivation. The modern period covered the 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17 season. In these harvests, the typical property of Cascavel began to cultivate the entire area with genetically modified soy and corn. Soybean filled the entire area of the 1st crop and maize most of the area of the 2nd crop. The wheat completed the cultivation of the 2nd crop. Over the seasons it has been found more intensive cultivation system in the 2nd crop area, increasing corn sowing and reducing wheat. In addition, the typical farm no longer sowed maize in the first crop and began to sow only genetically modified soybeans and corn. In general, the results presented here indicate that most recent years (2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17) net revenues exceed those recorded in the base analysis years (2007/08, 2008/09 and 2009/10), leading to a context in which the producer has adopted better techniques over time.

Nos últimos anos, modernas técnicas de gestão de recursos hídricos vêm sendo difundidas e aplicadas à alocação desses recursos, que são escassos e competitivos. O uso dessas técnicas em áreas irrigadas pode permitir o aumento da eficiência econômica dos investimentos e favorecer sua alocação de maneira mais eficaz no dimensionamento e operação da infraestrutura hídrica regional existente. Os modelos de Programação Linear (PL) e Não-Linear (PNL) tem se destacado dado o potencial de resolução e aplicabilidade dos modelos projetados. O objetivo do presente trabalho constituiu-se em desenvolver modelos de PL e PNL que otimizem o dimensionamento de sistemas de irrigação localizada, sob o enfoque da minimização do custo de implantação e operação do sistema de irrigação; e também modelos de PL e PNL para propor planos ótimos de cultivos, sob o enfoque da maximização da receita líquida das culturas irrigadas. Os modelos desenvolvidos foram aplicados no Perímetro de Irrigação Tabuleiro de Russas no Estado do Ceará, especificamente em áreas de agricultura familiar com 8,0 ha, indicando alternativas de culturas a serem implantadas e suas respectivas áreas, incorporando restrições de disponibilidade de área, água e mercado. Os valores otimizados dos custos de implantação e operação do Perímetro foram obtidos com o modelo de PL, com um custo de US$ 1.588,06 ha-1.ano-1 e a maximização da receita líquida anual foi obtida com o modelo de PNL, com um valor total de US$ 77.377,88, utilizando o seguinte padrão de cultivo: 4,0 ha de banana; 4,0 ha feijão verde Vigna 1 no primeiro semestre e 4,0 ha de feijão verde Vigna 2 no segundo semestre, para um volume mensal de irrigação de 20.534,40 m3. / In irrigated activity, water is the most important input, and its optimization is essential. In recent years, modern techniques of water resources management have been diffused and applied to the allocation of these resources, which are scarce and competitive. The use of these techniques in irrigated areas can increase the economic efficiency of investments and favor their allocation in a more efficient way in the design and operation of the existing regional water infrastructure. The Linear (PL) and Nonlinear Programming (NLP) models have been highlighted given the potential for resolution and applicability of the designed models. The objective of this work was to develop PL and NLP models that optimize the design of localized irrigation systems, under the focus of minimizing the cost of implantation and operation of the irrigation system; and also PL and NLP models to propose optimal crop plans under the maximization approach of net income from irrigated crops. The models developed were applied to the Table Irrigation Perimeter of Russas in the State of Ceará, specifically in areas of family farming with 8.0 ha, indicating alternatives of crops to be implanted and their respective areas, incorporating restrictions of availability of area, water and marketplace. The optimized values of Perimeter deployment and operation costs were obtained with the PL model, with a cost of US $ 1,588.06 ha-1.yr-1 and the maximization of annual net revenue was obtained with the NLP model of US$ 77,377.88, using the following crop standard: 4.0 ha of banana; 4.0 ha Vigna 1 green beans in the first semester and 4.0 ha Vigna 2 green beans in the second semester, applied with a monthly irrigation volume of 20,534.40 m3.

An Economic Comparison of High Tunnel and Open-Field Strawberry Production in Southeastern Virginia and A Joint Estimation of Acreage Planted to U.S. Major Crops

This thesis covers two separate studies. The first study, chapter 2, was conducted to evaluate whether there are additional economic returns from producing strawberries in the high tunnel compared to the open-field in Southeast Virginia. We develop and compare budgets for eight strawberry cultivars grown in the two environments and sold under three marketing strategies (pre-pick wholesale, pre-pick retail, and U-pick). Almost all cultivars in the high tunnel generated negative net revenues regardless of the marketing strategy. In contrast, net revenues from open-field cultivars were always positive. In the second study, chapter 3, we used a fractional multinomial logit model to estimate the effect of crop revenues, input costs, and fuel ethanol production on the joint acreages planted to eight U.S major crops (barley, corn, cotton, peanuts, rice, sorghum, soybeans, and wheat). We found a positive and statistically significant marginal effect of the expected peanuts' revenue on its acreage share. The expected corn revenue had a negative average marginal effect on soybean acreage share, and the effect of expected wheat revenue was positive on cotton acreage share and negative on rice acreage share. / Master of Science / This thesis covers two separate research studies. The first study, chapter 2}, was conducted to evaluate whether growing strawberries in a simple, low-cost, and passive heat structure known as a "high tunnel" would yield more profit (the difference between total revenues and total costs) compared to growing them outside in an open-field in Southeast Virginia. We estimate and compare differences between total revenues and costs for eight strawberry cultivars grown in the two environments and sold under three marketing strategies. The first two marketing strategies involve growers harvesting strawberries themselves. They can then either retail them (farm stands, farmers' markets, or in a similar setting: pre-pick retail) or sell them in bulk to be retailed by others (pre-pick wholesale). A third marketing strategy involves consumers visiting a farm and picking their own strawberries (U-pick). Almost all cultivars grown in the high tunnel structure resulted in a loss (negative difference between total revenues and costs) regardless of the marketing strategy. In contrast, cultivars produced in the open-field always generated a profit (positive total revenues and costs difference). In the second study, chapter 3, we estimated the effect of crop revenues, input costs, and fuel ethanol production on acreages planted to eight U.S major crops (barley, corn, cotton, peanuts, rice, sorghum, soybeans, and wheat), and we considered the fact that acreages allocated to one crop affect other crops' acreages. We found that increasing the expected revenue of peanuts leads to an increase in its acreage share. Increasing the expected revenue of corn leads to a decrease in soybeans' acreage share. Finally, increasing the expected revenue of wheat leads to an increase in the cotton acreage share and a decrease in the rice acreage share.
