Because people use the Web differently to traditional media, media companies should
investigate the new medium to fully reap its benefits and to understand its future impact on
their revenue streams.
British media companies have co-operated and invested heavily in the Internet for years and
continue to do so through content portals, typically web sites for their newspaper titles.
They initially did so to protect themselves from entrepreneurs who potentially threatened
their classified advertising revenues with Web-only classified advertising directories.
Classified advertising works better on the Web.
A newspaper's website seems to have no adverse effect on its circulation. Via their websites,
newspapers can reach and market to people who would otherwise not buy them.
British advertisers are spending more on advertising online and on advertising in the regional
press.
Rapidly expanding Newsquest is the second-largest British regional publisher. Its
management structure is hierarchial and it aggressively controls costs.
Although the digital media department of Newsquest (London) has some flaws (notably
when it comes to communication with other departments), its strategy is generally sound.
Newsquest's newsrooms are multi-media and all journalists contribute to and maintain
newspaper websites.
Most of Newsquest's Internet revenue comes from charging classified advertisers more for
uploading their adverts to the websites. The adverts are listed in Fish-t, a classified
advertising database maintained by most UK regional publishers.
Whereas Newsquest's regional policies are generally sound, national plans and software
programmes are often not suitable for such a devolved corporation.
Newquest's strategy of aggressive cost control by underpaying staff (and hence often not
being able to retain top performers) jeopardises its classified advertising revenues, as the
competition it faces on the Web is larger than in traditional circulation areas.
Greater automation is necessary to bypass shortomings and errors made by low-performing
staff. The Watford Observer's website is operated similarly to a free newspaper. Newsroom staff
are encouraged to take ownership of it and emphasis lies on convincing online readers to buy
The Watford Observer in print.
The website plays an important role in marketing the newspaper and mainly generates profit
by providing added value to advertisers.
The newspaper's circulation has been falling for some time and some senior managers
ascribe this to the Internet. By means of a home delivery system that allows people to
subscribe to the printed newspaper online, circulation could be boosted through the website.
The current subscriptions model is ineffective.
With the exception of CaxtonlCTP, some major South African media companies with
regional titles follow a pro-active newspaper website strategy.
Although there is a critical mass of wealthy consumers and technological development is
sufficient, government telecommunications policy and the telephone operator's monopoly
seriously undermine Internet use and media companies' profits from it.
As technology advances (portable, fold-up displays are not far off), newspaper content may
in future be displayed exclusively online. This is problematic, as display advertising is
ineffective on the Web.
Newspaper publishers could acquire mobile telephone operators and Internet service
providers to control these developments.
Newspaper companies must (and many do) accept they need to be multimedia publishers in
the future.
South African media companies are forced to maintain low-key Internet operations until
government telecommunications policy changes. Newsquest's online business model is an

community newspaper from which it developed - the DistrictMail. It quickly evolved into a
full blown community newspaper website with its own business model, earning its own way.
Dotcoms are based on a virtual business model not seen up till now, trying to replace 'bricks
and mortar' with 'clicks and mortar', making it difficult for investors to evaluate its worth.
The DistrictMail community newspaper has been the heartbeat of the Helderberg, reflecting
the news and views of the people of the area, for almost seventy-five years. Helderberg.com
adds value and completes the circle.
The success of companies depends on profitability. Bringing old and new media together,
helderberg. com is the first community newspaper website to carry its own advertisers, and the
first to break even and even make profit in the notoriously difficult dotcom internet arena.
This paper examines how a community newspaper website is made - dissecting the internal
and external makings, and shows helderberg. com is based on a structure and business model
that has economic sustainability on which similar sized community newspapers, can launch or

Framing economic news: an examination of coverage of the Growth, Employment and Redistribution (GEAR) strategy in Business DayMudzamiri, Wonder Tariro January 2009 (has links)
This thesis examines the way in which Business Day portrayed the neo-liberal logic of the Growth, Employment and Redistribution (GEAR) strategy as both common sense and natural. It utilises framing analysis, adapting its application to the context of media studies as the guiding theoretical framework in trying to understand how Business Day, as representative of the mainstream financial media, frame economic policy issues. Using content analysis, the thesis examines how elite sources are the preferred news sources above ordinary citizens and are thus in a position to shape news content in line with their neo-liberal views on the economy. The thesis analyses how Business Day, by means of the globalisation frame and other frames, legitimated and in the process perpetuated the GEAR strategy as the macroeconomic policy of choice for South Africa in 1996 against the background of the country’s political transformation and economic policy development in preceding years.

Text in Afrikaans / Die navorsingsonderwerp van hierdie proefskrif is ondersoekende joernalistiek en die moontlike of waarskynlike
invloed wat die spesifieke joernalistieke praktyk op die proses van sosiale verandering kan uitoefen. Daar word van die aanname uitgegaan dat koerantberigte weens ondersoekende joernalistiek in sommige gevalle kan lei tot die bewusmaking van ongeregtighede en/of onregmatige dade in die samelewing en dat die joernalistieke praktyk 'n bydraende faktor of soms 'n katalisator tot optredes van owerhede en uiteindelik sosiale verandering
kan wees. Om die aanname toe te lig, word eerstens gekyk na die betekenis van sosiale verandering. Antwoorde
word onder meer gesoek op vrae soos: (i) Wat is
sosiale verandering? en (ii) Wat is die invloed van die
media op sosiale verandering? Tweedens word daar gekyk na wat ondersoekende joernalistiek behels en hoe dit

this specific journalistic practice may have on the process of social change. The study proceeds from the assumption that investigative newspaper reports can in some instances lead to an awareness of injustices and/or illegal actions in society. This form of journalistic practice could therefore be a contributing factor, and in some cases, a catalyst for government action and ultimately social change. To elaborate on this assumption, attention is firstly given to the meaning of social change. In this respect answers to the following questions are sought:
(i) What is social change? and (ii) What is the influence
of the media on social change? Secondly, attention is given to the characteristics of investigative journalism
and how this practice differs from conventional journalism. Thirdly a profile of Vrye Weekblad is offered
in order to justify the case study. Fourthly a model for the qualitative content analysis of instances
of investigative journalism is formulated. Fifthly this model is tested empirically on investigations undertaken
by Vrye Weekblad. Finally an attempt is made to reconcile the theoretical perspectives on social change and

"Totally unacceptable" : representations of homosexuality in South African public discourseMutambanengwe, Simbarashe Abel January 2014 (has links)
The 1996 Constitution of South Africa is ranked as one of the most liberal and democratic constitutions in the world. The right to freedom of sexual orientation, equality and the freedom of association amongst other rights is in its Bill of Rights and are thus inherently assured and protected in post- apartheid, democratic South Africa. However, the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community continue to face discrimination and prejudice despite this newly established constitutional order. The present study is interested in how, in the light of the equality clause in the South African constitution, homosexuality is represented and constructed in the South African media. The thesis examines representations of homosexuality between the years 1999-2013 in articles collected from the Independent Online media site which incorporates 30 newspapers. The approach focuses on the topics, overall news report schemata, local meanings, style and rhetoric of the news reports. The results of the study show that negative attitudes towards homosexuality are framed in three main ways: homosexuality is represented as "unAfrican"; "ungodly" and "unnatural". I argue that rather than extreme forms of violence (such as "corrective rape" and murder) directed against LGBT citizens being interpreted as the aberrant behaviour of a few, these need to be understood in the context of the circulation of the above justificatory narratives.

A comparative analysis of the coverage of the South African electrical energy crisis during the period 2005-2010 by Cape Town newspapersHoltzhausen, Jacobus Petrus 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Electrical energy has become an indispensable part of the modern world, supporting
industries and economic systems. Any disruption of supply is felt immediately in all spheres
of life. The operation of a power system is a complex process involving rotating machines that
may fail from time even though they are maintained regularly. The overhead transmission
system is likewise prone to faults caused by environmental factors such as pollution and
lightning. Power authorities therefore operate their systems in such a way that they have
sufficient reserve capacity available to allow for contingencies. In the last decade of the
previous century a condition developed, for various reasons, that the reserve margin was too
small in the South African electricity supply system. At the end of 2005, a spate of failures
occurred at Koeberg power station and later in 2007 serious coal supply problems developed
at the large power stations in Mpumalanga, aggravating the situation.
This research project focuses on the complexity of the task of the reporter when
reporting on occurrences such as these. It is required to convey the factual situation to the
readers, avoiding alarmism and sensationalism. At the same time the reporter also has a role to
play in educating the readers. It was a difficult task, seeing that the reporters were not
necessary versed in the technical field. They therefore had to rely on Eskom’s spokespersons.
In this project newspaper clippings of various Western Cape newspapers containing the
word Eskom were analysed. The method of analysis was content analysis. Firstly the
quantitative content analysis was used to obtain distribution of articles over the period and
among newspapers. Thereafter the topics covered and the types of article were obtained for
the various newspapers and years. Next articles for 2006 and 2008 were investigated using
qualitative content analysis. Certain attributes in the articles were detected manually and a
profile was obtained for each newspaper for each year period.
Questionnaires were sent to reporters responsible for some of the articles and to a
technical expert who was consulted regularly by the news reporters.
It was found that the number of articles and style of presentation vary among the
newspapers. There is evidence of framing of Eskom as incompetent. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Elektriese energie het ¢n onontbeerlike deel van die moderne wêreld geword wat nywerhede
en ekonomiese stelsels ondersteun. Enige onderbreking van toevoer word onmiddellik in alle
lewensfere gevoel. Die werking van kragstelsel is komplekse proses met roterende
masjiene en ander toerusting wat onderworpe aan faling is, selfs al word dit in stand gehou.
Die oorhoofse transmissiestelsel is ook onderworpe aan foute wat deur omgewingsfaktore
soos besoedeling en weerlig veroorsaak word. Kragvoorsieners bedryf daarom hul stelsels
so dat hulle voldoende reserwekapasiteit het om toe te laat vir gebeurlikhede. In die laaste
dekade van die vorige eeu het die toestand, om verskeie redes, ontwikkel dat die
reserwemarge in die Suid-Afrikaanse stelsel te klein geword het. Teen die einde van 2005
het reeks falings by Koeberg kragstasie plaasgevind en later in 2007 het ernstige
steenkoolvoorsieningsprobleme by die groot kragstasies in Mpumalanga ontstaan en dus die
situasie vererger.
Hierdie navorsingsprojek fokus op die kompleksiteit van die taak van die verslaggewer
as oor sulke gebeure verslag gedoen word. Dit word vereis om die feitelike situasie oor te dra
sonder alarmisme en sensasie. Terselfdertyd moet die verslaggewer ook rol speel om die
lesers op te voed. Dit is moeilike taak daar die verslaggewers nie noodwendig belese in die
tegniese vakgebied is nie. Hulle moes dus staatmaak op Eskom se spreekbuise.
In hierdie projek is koerantuitknipsels van verskeie Wes-Kaapse koerante wat die woord
Eskom bevat, ontleed. Die metode wat gebruik is, is inhoudsanalise. Eerstens is kwantitatiewe
inhoudsanalise gebruik om die verspreiding van artikels oor die tydperk en tussen die koerante
te verkry. Daarna is die onderwerpe wat gedek is verkry vir die onderskeie koerante en jare.
Vervolgens is artikels van 2006 en 2008 ondersoek deur kwalitatiewe inhoudsanalise te doen.
Sekere kenmerke is in die artikels opgespoor en profiel is verkry vir elke koerant en elke
jaarperiode.
Vraelyste is aan verslaggewers wat sommige artikels geskryf het en ook aan tegniese
deskundige wat gereeld deur verslaggewers genader is, gestuur.
Dit is bevind dat die getal artikels en die styl van aanbieding wissel tussen die koerante

South African tabloid newspapers’ representation of black celebrities: A social constructionism perspectiveMatsebatlela, Emmanuel Mogoboya 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Journalism))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines how positively or negatively as well as how subjectively or objectively the South African tabloid newspapers represent black celebrities. This examination was primarily conducted by using the content analysis research technique. The researcher selected a total of 85 newspapers spread across four different South African daily and weekend tabloid newspapers that were published during the period February to September 2008. The results from the data collected reveal that tabloid newspapers tend to overemphasize negativity when reporting about black celebrities. The findings also reveal a clear differential in the representation of black female celebrities vis-à-vis male celebrities. Unlike male celebrities whose roles were mainly defined in terms of political activities and personal disputes, female celebrities’ roles were largely confined to relationships and sex. The language used by the four newspapers in their representation of celebrities appears to be humiliating and, in some instances, downright disparaging. There is little doubt that media representations of celebrities, whether positive or negative, serve as mirrors to how some members of society behave. To this end, there needs to be a shift from the current preoccupation with sensationalizing negative news when South African tabloid newspapers report on black celebrities. Tabloid newspapers should judiciously use their greater focus on celebrities’ private lives to report on more positive personal stories that focus on the achievements of celebrities, including how some celebrities are living positively with HIV/AIDS. Since this study only focused on South African tabloid newspapers’ representations of black celebrities, and only employed the content analysis method, further research is recommended on the impact of celebrities’ representations on the South African society. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie ondersoek hoe positief of negatief, asmede subjektief of objektief, daar oor swart beroemdes in Suid-Afrikaanse ponie- of skinderkoerante verslag gedoen word. Die ondersoek is primêr met behulp van die inhoudsanaliseondersoekmetode uitgevoer. Die navorser het 85 koerante uit vier verskillende Suid-Afrikaanse dagblaaie en naweekponiekoerante gekies uit die tydperk Februarie tot September 2008. Die resultate toon ‘n tendens in die poniekoerante dat oorwegend negatiewe verslagdoening oor swart beroemdes vooropgestel word. Die bevindinge toon ook ’n duidelike verskil tussen die verslagdoening oor beroemde swart vroue teenoor dié oor swart mans. In teenstelling met die mans wie se rolle hoofsaaklik ingevolge hulle politieke aktiwiteite en persoonlike dispute gedefinieer word, word beroemde swart vroue se rolle hoofsaaklik beperk tot verhoudings en seks. Die taalgebruik in die verslaggewing oor beroemdes in die vier poniekoerante blyk uiters vernederend, en in sommige gevalle, selfs degraderend en wrang te wees. Daar bestaan min twyfel dat verslaggewing oor beroemdes in die media, hetsy positief of negatief, weerspieël hoe sommige lede van die samelewing lewe. Om hierdie rede is ’n verskuiwing in die huidige beheptheid met die sensasionalisering van negatiewe nuus in die verslaggewing oor swart beroemdes nodig. Poniekoerante wat op die persoonlike lewens van beroemdes fokus behoort na meer positiewe verslagdoening oor hul prestasies te strewe, insluitend, hoe sommige beroemdes positief met MIV/Vigs lewe. The coalface of journalism: A qualitative research investigation into development communication objectives amongst rural newspapers in the Overberg DistrictGalant, Raashied 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Journalism))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / 131 p. / This thesis explores how six commercial local newspapers based in the towns of
Swellendam, Bredasdorp, Caledon and Gansbaai are reporting on gender and HIV/AIDS
in ways that may help to shift specific attitudes as well as to generate appropriate
community responses. The overall aim of the study is to advance theories around the
location of commercial news media in the development context. It also aims to inform
and empower development workers and activists on the opportunities or pitfalls in
engaging with rural local media to advance their development goals.
In most prior studies into the nature of gender or HIV/AIDS reporting in the media in
South Africa, the focus has been exclusively on mainstream corporate and/or urbanbased
media titles and very little investigation has been done into the performance of small
ruralbased
media. The study employs two methods of data collection namely, a
quantitative content analysis of newspapers and structured interviews with the editors of
the papers, and a sample group of government employees and community activists in the
respective towns.
The structured interviews provide a qualitative dimension to the content analysis, bearing
in mind the dangers of quantifying media content and making isolated judgements on the
actual context of journalistic practice. Through the interviews, the researcher has been
able to explore the extent to which the perceptions of the media editors visavis
a public
interest role with respect to gender and HIV/AIDS actually differs from the quantitative
evidence of their performance and the perceptions of key informants in their
communities.
The findings of the study suggest that local rural media hold out great hope with respect
to the advancement of development communication goals through commercial media
platforms. The editors in the four towns have established organic connections with their
community, albeit tenuous, but which extend into the ranks of development workers in
their towns. The data from the content analysis suggests that women enjoy high visibility
in the pages of their local papers, and they are most likely to be portrayed as positive
achievers than as women encountering violence.
The tenuous nature of the connections between editor and community are most starkly
evident around the issue of HIV/AIDS, with coverage of this being very low despite much
work being undertaken in the community to deal with the pandemic. With respect to the
issue of gender, there was demonstrable evidence from actual examples of content, that
showed on the one hand the capacity to motivate for change in women's lives, but also on
the other hand a danger of reinforcing attitudes that compound women's oppression. The
study offers recommendations to a range of roleplayers to ensure, firstly, the continued
survival of local rural newspapers, and also support in building capacity to see these

information explosion of an unprecedented scope. Twenty-four hour a day news
channels, electronic publications, the Internet, and a proliferation of print publications
feed this media explosion.
Coupled with this has been the growth of a celebrity culture, where the lives of the
rich and famous have been placed under intense scrutiny.
Commercial interests also have to be taken into account. It is conventional wisdom
that sensational news sells newspapers. This news is not limited to celebrity news, but
encompasses crime reporting as well as high profile scandals affecting ordinary
people. As the news becomes more ubiquitous, the competition becomes tougher and
the pressure to print what sells grows.
The other commercial pressure is that of the marketers of the entertainment industry
who have a vested interest in having the stars of their movies, music and television
shows enjoy a high media profile.
This study aims to determine whether the South Africa media has shown a trend
towards reporting a more sensational and celebrity based form of news. It seeks to
discover whether the South African news has become tabloidised.
This will be done by analysing the content and presentation of the front page of The
Cape Times, a Cape Town based broadsheet, over the period of several years. This
will be used as a measure to determine whether or not the content and form of the
South African media is following a trend to tabloidisation. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die vooruitgang in mediategnologie aan die einde van die twintigste eeu het tot 'n
oorvloed van inligting gelei. Nuuskanale wat vier-en-twintig uur per dag uitsaai,
elektroniese publikasies, asook die Internet en die groei van die drukmedia het
hierdie verskynselondersteun.
Tegelykertyd het die media in die jongste dekades meer begin fokus op die lewens
van beroemdes.
Kommersiële faktore moet ook in ag geneem word. Met die groei van die media is
meer druk geplaas op individuele nuusorganisasies om winste te maak. Dit is
alombekend dat sensasionele nuus verkoop. Hierdie soort nuus is nie net gefokus op
beroemdes nie, maar ook op misdaad en skandale deur gewone mense.
Bemarkingsamptenare van die vermaaklikheidsbedryf moedig nuus oor beroemdes
aan, want dit help om hul produkte te verkoop as hul sterre dekking kry.
Hierdie studie wil vasstelof die media in Suid Afrika wel meer fokus op sensasionele

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The print media, especially newspapers, play an important role in providing
information in any society. In the rural communities of South Africa, information
available to the people is scanty. Growth of a newspaper is necessary if a newspaper
is to fulfil its duties. The Zoutpansberger and Mirror are two of the few local
newspapers that circulate in the Far North Region of the Northern Province.
The Zoutpansberger, which started in 1985, has experienced negative growth in the
various departments of the newspaper, while the Mirror, which started in September
1990, has experienced slow growth. Several factors have been responsible for this.
Therefore, there was a need to examine and compare the factors that have affected
the growth/development of the newspapers over ten years.
The aims and objectives of the study are to examine and compare the factors that
affect the growth and development of the Zoutpansberger and Mirror, give
suggestions to facilitate future growth and the best ways of utilising the available
resources. A literature survey was carried out to get the perspectives of other
researchers.
Data was collected after conducting personal interviews, using the interview
schedule. It was analysed and interpreted with the use of graphs and charts. The
findings reveal that economic, social, cultural and geographical factors affect the
growth of the newspaper. A few recommendations have been given to highlight ways
in which the paper can make full use of the available resources. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die drukmedia, in die besonder koerante, speel 'n belangrike rol in die oordrag van
inligting in enige samelewing. In die plattelandse gemeenskappe van Suid-Afrika is
die beskikbare inligting karig. Vir 'n koerant om sy pligte na te kom, is dit nodig dat
die koerant groei. Die Zoutpansberger en Mirror is twee van die plaaslike koerante in
die Verre Noorde-streek van die Noordelike Provinsie.
Die Zoutpansberger, gestig in 1985, het negatiewe groei In verskeie afdelings
ondervind, terwyl die Mirror, gestig in September 1990, stadige groei ondervind het.
Verskeie faktore is hiervoor verantwoordelik. Daar was daarom 'n behoefte om die
faktore te ondersoek wat die groei van die koerante oor 'n tydperk van tien jaar
beïnvloed het.
Die doel van die studie is om die faktore wat die groei en ontwikkeling van die
Zoutpansberger en die Mirror geraak het, te ondersoek en te vergelyk en om
voorstelle te gee wat toekomstige groei en optimale benutting van beskikbare bronne
kan bewerkstellig. 'n Literatuurstudie is gedoen om die perspektiewe van ander
navorsers te betrek.
Data is ingesamel nadat persoonlike onderhoude gedoen is met behulp van die
onderhoudskedule. Dit is geanaliseer en geïnterpreteer met behulp van grafika en
kaarte. Die bevindinge bring aan die lig dat ekonomiese, maatskaplike, kulturele en
geografiese faktore die groei van die koerant beïnvloed. Enkele voorstelle is gemaak
om moontlike maniere te belig waarop die koerant die beskikbare bronne ten volle
kan benut.
