Androgyny and Dominance: Gender Construction in Anaïs Nin's Erotica Series

Watson, Bruce Wallace 27 April 1999 (has links)
Anaïs Nin's Diary and her fiction have been lauded by critics for their imagery, Freudian allusions, and creativity. What has not been considered, and is equally important, is her Erotica series, Delta of Venus and Little Birds. These books, her most popular, not only address the issues that she covers in her other works, but also ask questions about how humans are gendered, and consider the degree to which individuals construct their own gender identities. In exploring these questions, she presages not only the theorists who effectively deconstruct her message, but also the gender-bending society which inspired them. Queer theory is particularly effective for considering the sexual messages with which Nin populates her writings. Much as Judith Butler de-emphasizes totalizing gender roles, Nin allows her characters to occupy multiple gender roles. Thus, Nin's female protagonists often take on the sexual positions generally granted to men in American society. Conversely, her male characters are often relegated to less-empowered roles. Although these shifts might not seem particularly impressive in our more liberated society, they were undoubtedly surprising in Nin's day. Moreover, it is impressive that these role-reversing characters were created over forty years before the advent of queer theory, and long before the popular rise of the Feminist movement. / Master of Arts

El Niño and the structure of mutualistic and antagonistic bat food webs revealed by DNA barcoding

de Oliveira, Hernani Fernandes Magalhães January 2018 (has links)
El Niño is a climatic event that can have large-scale impacts on global rainfall patterns, causing severe droughts in some regions and floods in others. The frequency of strong El Niño events is expected to increase in the future under scenarios of climate change. Despite this, the consequences of El Niño-induced droughts for ecological interactions are poorly understood. Here I applied DNA barcoding to assess the diets of frugivorous and insectivorous bats in the dry forest and rainforest of Costa Rica during one of the strongest El Niño on record (2015) and compare it with a non-El Niño year. My data indicated that the mutualistic network structure observed during the El Niño event was similar in both dry forest and rainforest, despite these habitats experiencing droughts and flooding, respectively. However, during the non-El Niño wet season in the dry forest, niche overlap was higher than the El Niño event. Antagonistic networks showed little change in the overall size and diversity of modules of interaction, but there were significant changes in modularity and the position of the nodes between the networks constructed during the El Niño year versus the normal year in dry forest. Additionally, I evaluated the relationship between wing morphology and diet specialization and differentiation of individuals. I observed that individuals of a common insectivorous bat species, Pteronotus mesoamericanus, showed differences in diet that correlated with wing morphology. To conclude, El Niño was associated with similar changes in the organisation of mutualistic networks in both dry and wet forests, as well as with modifications at the node level in antagonistic networks of dry forest. Such changes could have profound impacts for network resilience and the maintenance of interactions and species at both sites over time.

Optimisation of the purification process of a zinc sulfate leach solution for zinc electrowinning

Krause, Bernard Josef January 2014 (has links)
The leach solution obtained by leaching of zinc containing ores typically has to be highly purified before it can be used as electrolyte for the electrowinning of zinc. Cobalt is a troublesome impurity in the sense that not only has it even at relatively low concentrations a very significant negative impact on the zinc electrowinning process, but that is also difficult to remove by the zinc cementation process typically used for this purpose. The aim with the present work was to better understand the arsenic activated cementation of cobalt using zinc powder to enable the optimization of an industrial purification plant. Thermodynamic based calculations confirmed that the role of arsenic in the process is to allow for the precipitation of the cobalt at more positive potentials as cobalt arsenide and that it should be possible to remove the cobalt to very low concentrations with zinc cementation. The kinetics of cobalt cementation was studied using batch cementation experiments using different sizes and quantities of zinc dust and by varying the temperature. The nature of the cementation products was characterized using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. It was found that the cobalt cementation could be described by a first order rate equation but with a faster initial stage with an activation energy of 43 kJ/mol followed by a much slower temperature insensitive second stage. Activating species such as copper, cadmium and arsenic cemented faster than the cobalt on the zinc. The rate of cobalt cementation was increased by using the same mass of finer zinc, increasing the temperature and recirculation of some of the cemented cobalt. It was shown that the zinc dust consumption and/or the minimum temperature required to achieve the required cobalt removal could be reduced by recirculation of the cobalt cement from the early stages of a train of backmix reactors or by using zinc dust with a finer size distribution. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering / unrestricted
