Phosphorus reduction in dairy effluent through flocculation and precipitation

Phosphorus (P) is a pollutant in freshwater systems because it promotes eutrophication. The dairies in the North Bosque and its water body segments import more P than they export. Dairies accumulate P-rich effluent in lagoons and use the wastewater for irrigation. As more P is applied as irrigation than is removed by crops, P accumulates in the soil. During intense rainfall events, P enters the river with stormwater runoff and can become bio-available. Reducing the P applied to the land would limit P build up in the soil and reduce the potential for P pollution. Since wastewater P is associated with suspended solids (SS), the flocculants, poly-DADMAC and PAM, were used to reduce SS. To precipitate soluble P from the effluent, NH4OH was added to raise the pH. Raw effluent was collected from a dairy in Comanche County, TX, and stored in 190-L barrels in a laboratory at Texas A&M University. Flocculant additions reduced effluent P content by as much as 66%. Addition of NH4OH to the flocculated effluent raised the pH from near 8 to near 9, inducing P precipitation, further reducing the P content. The total P reduction for the best combination of treatments was 97%, a decrease from 76 to 2 mg L-1. If this level of reduction were achieved in dairy operations, P pollution from effluent application would gradually disappear.

The detection of estrus continues to be a primary factor contributing to poor reproductive performance in modern dairy cattle. The objectives of this research were 1) to evaluate performance of automated detection of estrus using a reference standard of ovulation detection with temporal progesterone patterns 2) to evaluate the efficacy of parameters measured by automated detection of estrus systems 3) to evaluate the efficacy of alerts generated by several commercially available systems used for automated detection of estrus and 4) to determine the differences in these parameters among cows with or without poor health conditions at the time of estrus. Systems used for automated detection of estrus can perform better than the previous original reference standard, visual observation for standing behaviors. All systems used for automated detection of estrus tested were similar for estrus detection efficiency.

The Canadian supply managed dairy sector is likely to face more competitive pressure from challenges through the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the changing global trade environment. Therefore, it is highly prudent for Canadian dairy producers to focus their concern on their level of competitiveness and how to improve it. This study investigated the competitiveness of Ontario dairy sector based on a sample of farm level data with a Box-Cox transformed econometric cost model. The data were gathered by the Ontario Dairy Farm Accounting Project, for the years 2005, 2006, and 2007. The impacts of output, yield per cow and several farm-specific characteristics on the average cost of milk production were examined. Results support the presence of significant size economies and yield economies within Ontario milk production. Minimum costs were achieved for farms with approximately 125 cows. The results also indicated that some farm-specific characteristics, breed and region, also had significant impacts on the cost of Ontario milk production. However, it appears that Ontario farms may find it difficult to survive if they are forced to face international competition. Even at their minimum, average costs were above an indicator international dairy price.

Machine-learning assisted development of a knowledge-based system in dairy farming

The goal of this research was to explore the use of machine learning to assist in the development of knowledge-based systems (KBS) in dairy farming. A framework was first developed which described the various types of management and control activities in dairy farming and the types of information flows among these activities. This framework provided a basis for the creation of computerized information systems and helped to identify the analysis of group-average lactation curves as a promising area of application. A case-acquisition and decision-support system was developed to assist a domain specialist in generating example cases for machine learning. The specialist classified data from 33 herds enrolled with the Quebec dairy herd analysis service, resulting in 1428 lactations and 7684 tests of individual cows, classified as outlier or non-outlier, and 99 interpretations of group-average lactation curves. To enable the performance analysis of classifiers, generated with machine learning from these small data sets, a method was established involving cross-validation runs, relative operating characteristic curves, and analysis of variance. In experiments to filter lactations and tests, classification performance was significantly affected by preprocessing of examples, creation of additional attributes, choice of machine-learning algorithm, and algorithm configuration. For the filtering of individual tests, naive-Bayes classification showed significantly better performance than decision-tree induction. However, the specialist considered the decision trees as more transparent than the knowledge generated with naive Bayes. The creation of a series of three classifiers with increased sensitivity at the expense of reduced specificity per classification task, allows users of a final KBS to choose the desired tendency of classifying new cases as abnormal. Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of metabolic acid-base balance on feed intake and susceptibility of dairy heifers to ketoacidosis. Animals were fed two dietary cation-anion difference diets [dietary cation-anion difference is defined as mEq (Na++K+)-(Cl -+S2-) kg-1 dietary dry matter], a high dietary cation-anion difference (positive) and a low dietary cation-anion difference (negative). The heifers fed the positive dietary cation-anion difference had significantly higher blood pH, blood bicarbonate and dry matter intake than heifers fed the negative dietary cation-anion difference. There was an initial decrease in dry matter intake by the heifers fed the negative dietary cation-anion difference. However this difference was not significant by the end of the two week period. It is unclear whether the reduced dry matter intake in the heifers fed the negative dietary cation-anion difference is the result of metabolic-acidosis caused by the anionic salts, poor palatability of the anionic salts or a combination of both. Heifers were induced into a nervous ketosis by feeding 1,3-butanediol. There was no difference in the incidence of ketosis between animals fed positive and negative dietary cation-anion difference. Animals fed the positive diet tended to be more susceptible to anorexia.

Endocrine and metabolic mediators of dietary energy status and reproduction in dairy cows

Five experiments were undertaken to identify metabolites and hormones that could mediate the effect of dietary energy status on reproduction, particularly pulsatile secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) postpartum dairy cows. / In the first two experiments, the concentration of progesterone (P4) in tailhead adipose tissue and plasma in 12 cows at different stages of pregnancy and lactation was determined as was P4 produced in vitro by explants of tailhead adipose tissue. Concentration of P4 in adipose tissue was correlated with that of plasma P4 near estrus and during the luteal phase of the estrous cycle, and P4 was released in vitro by fat mobilization. / In the third and fourth experiments, blood was collected continuously for 16 h from four ovariectomized cows offered maintenance or restricted energy diets after priming with P4 or estradiol (E2) using a crossover experimental design. The results indicated that P4 released during body fat mobilization is minor and is not related to LH secretion. Dietary energy restriction influenced plasma LH concentration and pulse amplitude but the effect was modulated by P4 and E2 priming. Dietary energy restriction decreased glucose concentration but did not influence plasma non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), cortisol, P4 and insulin levels. Cortisol was negatively related to LH pulse frequency. Glucose and insulin were positively and negatively correlated with LH pulse amplitude, respectively. Cortisol, NEFA and glucose jointly had a negative correlation with LH concentration. / In the fifth experiment, blood samples were collected daily for 60 d and every 10 min for 8 h on 18, 36 and 54 d postpartum from 24 cows (12 ovariectomized) fed low (1.4 Mcal/kg DM) (L) or high (1.7 Mcal/kg DM) (H) energy in a 2 x 2 factorial treatment design. LH pulse frequency was reduced at 18 d postpartum in ovariectomized cows, but not in intact cows, fed L. First postpartum ovulation occurred later in intact cows fed L compared to those fed H. Energy balance and plasma glucose concentration were lower, but plasma NEFA, $ beta$-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and E2 concentrations higher, in cows fed L compared to those fed H. E2 concentration in intact cows fed L was elevated for a prolonged period prior to first ovulation. Diet had no influence on plasma P4 and insulin concentrations. Plasma E2 and BHB concentrations were positively correlated with LH pulse frequency in intact cows across diets and ovariectomized cows fed L, respectively. NEFA were negatively correlated with LH pulse amplitude in ovariectomized cows fed L. Glucose, NEFA and P4 were negatively, but BHB, E2 and insulin positively correlated, individually or in association, with LH concentration. / Overall, the results suggest that the effect of dietary energy status on LH patterns and timing of onset of postpartum ovulation is modulated by priming with or presence of ovarian steroids. The relationships of metabolites and hormones with LH patterns appear to change with dietary energy level, ovarian status and mutual associations among the metabolites and hormones. These parameters, especially glucose and BHB, may be potential mediators of the effect of dietary energy status on LH patterns. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
