Promising practices in superintendent evaluation : a case study of Texas School districts in Education Service Center Region 4

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the current practice of the superintendent’s evaluation process in three public school districts in Texas. This study collected information about current criteria used, the process as described by superintendents and school board presidents, and their perceptions regarding the effectiveness of the instrument used to measure the performance of the superintendent. A qualitative case study research approach was used to provide the researcher with rich, in-depth, relevant data. The researcher conducted multiple interviews of three superintendents and school board presidents in public school districts in Education Service Region IV of Texas. Additional data was gathered through documents and a reflective journal. There were six themes that emerged from data collected regarding superintendent evaluation: timing, rating, alignment, relationships, performance-based evaluation, and local control. The participating district modified and adjusted criteria and the process to align with the district context to more closely measure the school districts goals and priorities. The perspectives of superintendents and school board members offer insight into the process and struggles that each has with the overwhelming nature of the job of measuring the performance of the superintendent. / text

Where Have All the Shadows Gone is an immersive, interactive, site-specific performance that exists at the intersection between game design and live performance. This performance was crafted to inhabit the architecture and culture of the F. Loren Winship Drama Building located at the University of Texas at Austin. There were four performances and two previews each lasting seventy-five minutes. Live actors began the game by presenting the audience with a problem: a mysterious figure had developed a device to steal people’s shadows. The audience used their cell phones as digital, interactive tools to find and follow clues to uncover their antagonist. The audience solved puzzles that challenged their spatial reasoning, cryptographic skills, and critical thinking. Over the course of the interactive performance the audience coalesced into an intelligent gaming collective. The primary goal of this research is to analyze and devise a methodology for developing a performance that integrates game design with live theatre, as well as to evaluate the resultant performance of Where Have All the Shadows Gone. / text

This production was presented at the B. Iden Payne Theatre, (Department of Theatre and Dance) with guest artist John Langs directing. This document includes a discussion of certain aspects of my MFA curriculum, and the methodology studied. In addition, it also contains personal observations on my strengths and weaknesses as an actor, and the steps that were taken to transfer those discoveries into my work on stage in the production of Loves Labour’s Lost. / text

Assessment of N2 fixation in 32 cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp) genotypes grown in the field at Taung in South Africa, using 15N natural abundance

The aim of this study was to evaluate plant growth, grain yield and symbiotic N contribution by 32 cowpea genotypes, at Taung in South Africa. The data from a 2-year field study conducted in 2005 and 2006 showed that genotypes Fahari, Pan 311 and Glenda exhibited the highest dry matter yield and N contribution as they produced 2.9-, 2.7- and 3.5-fold more dry matter than cv. ITH98-46 and yielded 2.7-, 2.2- and 3.2-fold more N than cultivar ITH98-46 from IITA. Except for Benpila, all the 32 cowpea genotypes derived between 52.0 and 80.9% of their N nutrition from symbiotic fixation in 2005, with IT82D-889, Botswana White, IT93K-2045-29 and Ngonji exhibiting the highest %Ndfa values. The genotype Fahari showed the highest amount N-fixed (182 kg N-fixed/ha), followed by Pan 311, Glenda, TVu11424 and Mamlaka which contributed 160, 146, 130 and 125 kg N/ha, respectively. Genotypes Pan 311, Fahari and Glenda were among those that produced highest grain yield in 2005 and except for CH14 and IT86S-2246 (which produced 131 kg N/ha each), Fahari, Glenda and Pan 311, were again the highest in symbiotic N contribution (112, 106 and 105 kg N/ha, respectively). Grain yield was similarly high in Glenda, Pan 311 and Fahari (3.3, 3.1 and 2.9 t/ha, respectively) in 2006. In general, these data show that genotypes that fixed more N also produced more biomass and grain yield and are therefore, the best candidates for inclusion in cropping systems as biofertilizers.
