Helping communities to help themselves : the case of Eleos.

Current literature asserts that recipients of social services in South Africa are characterised by their history, race and ethnicity (Pharoah, 2007; Scheurmans and Visser, 2005). This study attempted to either confirm or challenge such assertions, based on the experiences and strategies implemented by Eleos, a unique non‐ profit organisation that is entrenched in communities that are diverse. The primary aim of this study was to explore the ethos of Eleos, in its interventions to address poverty in underprivileged communities. The study drew from two groups of participants. The first sample of eight participants was drawn from the two beneficiary communities of Eleos. One project is located in Booysens West and the other in Danville. The second group of participants were key informants who were drawn from the management committee as well as representatives of the individual projects. The research instruments took the form of two different semi‐structured interview schedules with open‐ended questions. One for key informants and another for beneficiaries. The research design that was used in the study was the case study design and was exploratory in nature. The collected data was transcribed and analysed using ‘thematic content analysis’ or ‘conceptual analysis’. Main findings indicated that donors seemed to impose a more radicalized view of the world, more so than the beneficiaries and organisation it self.

Responsive strategies adopted by non-profit organisations in recessionary times to ensure their financial sustainability

The impact of the global financial crisis, which has its origins in the United States, reverberated through the private sector and brought some country economies to their knees. This highlighted the interconnectedness of world economies. Big companies filed for bankruptcy whiles others were acquired in a bid to avoid total annihilation. Unemployment levels reached terrifying heights. While the world economy was unravelling and the legitimacy of governments was determined by their ability to alleviate the financial pressures their citizens were under; another group was feeling the pressure. However, the impact the financial crisis has had on group has not received nearly as much attention. Although the non-profit sector may not feature highly on the economic scales and matrices; it is part a part of the global economic fabric. It receives funds from governments, corporates, foundations, philanthropists and individual citizens. The size of the donations they receive correlates to the size of the disposable income of their donors. It therefore follows that when the world economy unravelled; non-profit organisations saw a marked decline in the funds received. This paper sets to establish not only how the South African non-profit sector responded to what became a funding crisis for them; but also to test their responsive strategies within the framework of the strategy process. An exploratory research method was used to investigate this problem, and the results showed on the one hand, a spirited sector that has taken the challenge on by adopting more commercial thinking to ensure their financial sustainability. Det idébärande ledarskapet : En fallstudie av ledarskapskulturen i Arbetarnas bildningsförbund (ABF)

This thesis describes and analyses how the leadership culture is constructed by the leadership discourse and leadership practices, in the Swedish non-profit organisation ABF, the Workers Education Association. The theoretical framework for the study is based on the practice theory by Swidler (2001) who claim that culture conceptualizes as practices in interaction with discourse. The empirical material consists of policy documents for the study of leadership discourse, and twelve qualitative interviews with leaders about their leadership practices. The empirical results show that the leadership discourse is based on three concepts: Carrying of idéas, Communicating and Developing. The leadership practice of the organisation is demonstrated through six leadership approaches: The communicative, The democratic, The stringent, The development focused, The situated and The positive. These approaches are used in internal and external activities. The conclusion of the study is that there is a clear stringency between the leadership discourse and leadership practices within the organisation which creates the leadership culture within ABF. The values and approaches expressed in the leadership discourse are also described in the interviews as practiced by the leaders.

Work for free? : Motivation of voluntary workers in the Red Cross

Background: Non-profit voluntary organisations are becoming increasingly important and many people are dependent on them in today’s society. These organisations could not work as well as they do or might not even survive without its volunteers, therefore the motivation of volunteers is of great importance. The Red Cross is the largest voluntary organisation in Sweden and also highly valued internationally. We wanted to find out what the employees at the Red Cross do to motivate its volunteers, if they use any guidelines for motivation and if they know what motivates volunteers. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate how the employees and the management of the Red Cross motivates its voluntary workers, as well as examine what actions can be taken to improve this. Method: To investigate human behaviour, such as motivation, a qualitative study is suitable. We have therefore chosen to perform such a study and have made ten personal interviews. In order to get the full picture we decided to do five interviews with volunteers and five with employees at the Red Cross. Some of the interviews were performed at the headquarter in Stockholm, a few at the local office in Jönköping and a couple over the phone. Conclusions: The employees at the Red Cross motivate its volunteers by letting them set goals, by offering education, acknowledge contributions among other things. No outspoken guidelines for motivating volunteers are used and we think it should be implemented into the organisation. It has come forth during the study that the voluntary leaders are given large responsibility and we suggest that these responsibilities should be divided and delegated to a larger amount of people. We have also found that there is a difference in motivation between the older and younger generations. To attract younger volunteers it is important to adhere to the differences and be aware of the shift of values in society.

A Relationship with benefits: Relationship Marketing in Non-­profit Organisations in South Africa

Purpose: The purpose of this article was to see how NPO’s can use relationship marketing in their activities to secure donors and funding for their causes and projects. Methodology: Unstructured interviews were held with representatives from different hospices as well as with representatives from the umbrella organisation, the HPCA. Findings: The findings showed that the concerned hospices all had similar issues and suffered with the same problems, both economical and communicative. Successful relations were built on personal contacts and projects where donors took an active part The higher the grade of involvement the higher commitment and loyalty towards the hospice/organisation. The factors that were salient in the successful cases are also factors that are salient in the theory of successful relationship marketing (e.g. loyalty, commitment, interaction). Value: The article highlights the complexity of the market of NPO’s in South Africa and some of the issues they are faced with.

The aim of this dissertation is to study the conditions of and changes in sociative democracy processes at club level. One sports club is studied, Örebro Sportklubb (ÖSK), from its foundation in 1908 up to 1989. The main sources are club minutes, member magazines and annual reports. Democracy, and its twofolded relation to sport and economy processes, is the main problem area of the study. The specific question is how aspirations for economic effectiveness and sporting success influenced the democracy processes in ÖSK between 1908 and 1989. The Swedish sports movement has been described as a democratic movement. But the same movement has also been portrayed as an undemocratic movement made of men, for men. The study is based on a broad understanding of the democracy concept where issues of representativeness, influence, participation and knowledge are prominent. At a club level, the study is analysing the contents of the Swedish sports movement's democracy and its change during the 1900s. The thesis also illustrates how the pursuit of economic efficiency affected the associative democracy. These efficiencies were visible already in the 1920s, but was deepened during the 1970s. In short, the democratic range decreased, and successful sections became less and less motivated to finance the deficits of other sections. But the increased market orientation did not only represent a threat to the associative democracy. Marketisation and commercialization also preconditioned the democracy. At the club arena (Eyravallen), the members met in the clubhouse and café which, in turn, deepened the social capital and friendships within the club.

Financování neziskových organizací v oblasti ochrany spotřebitele / Funding of non-profit- organizations in the area of consumer protection

This diploma thesis deals with analysis of forms of financing of a specific non-profit organisation in the field of consumer protection and preparation of proposal for improvement including its economic assessment. The work is focused on the TEST Civil Consumers? Association (TEST CCA). The first part of the thesis is made up of literary research. In terms of the actual thesis, working hypotheses were first determined, which were subsequently assessed on the basis of data gained during an interview with the Vice Chairman of the administrative board of TEST CCA, Mgr. Karel Pavlík, MBA, or on the basis of information gained from approx. 200 respondents by means of enquiry. When formulating proposals for improvement, I above all concentrated on the possibility of gaining further subscribers to the dTest magazine, which is closely related to strengthening of the financial independence of the association. I recommended holding a presentation of TEST CAA in shopping centres in individual regional cities in the Czech Republic. In my opinion, it would also be of benefit to publish adverts in the press.
