Using the lens of a community-based childhood obesity intervention, it is possible to examine the role of non-profit organizations in community development and to deconstruct the “community” in community-based research and identify the many competing interests within a community. This contextual understanding includes how the community is formed, how a community’s agenda is set, and who will complete the tasks outlined in that agenda. In applied anthropological settings and public health interventions that are community-based, it is essential to understand the context of community and which community (or communities) the researcher is working with to ensure that the data you collect reflects the community you wish to impact. The data collection for this dissertation occurred across phases. In Phase One, the focus was on collecting baseline data for a childhood obesity intervention using participant observation, unstructured interviews, and a community canvassing survey conducted with community volunteers who collected data going door-t- door. A midcourse review of results led to a shift in the research focus from the evaluation of a community-based intervention to an analysis of how community is conceptualized, with its various competing interests, in this particular context. To examine community membership, agenda setting, and how the community seeks to achieve its goals, this project utilized participant observation, unstructured interviewing, and semi-structured interviewing. Phase One data revealed that the community had limited interest in a childhood obesity intervention; additionally, local and county level data was ambiguous about the actual need for such an intervention. As a result, Phase Two data was collected to shed light on the role of community. There are three actors that make up “the community” at this project’s research site: 1) long-term residents, 2) short-term residents, and 3) the non-profit service providers, who work in the community. The extent to which the service providers are members of the community is somewhat contested, and honorary membership may be exchanged for other forms of capital. The agenda in the research setting appeared to be set by the local non-profit service providers, but data collection showed the importance of long-term residents (and, to a lesser extent, short-term residents) in guiding the focus of the non-profit agencies. To accomplish the goals of the agenda set in the community, a group of women emerged as key actors. In this dissertation I use the termed “Wonder Women” to connote an archetype of a resident in this community context; these women are residents who are committed to the agenda of the community and, through volunteering, are tested for their ability to work often exorbitant hours to achieve the goals of the community. The Wonder Women are worked until a breaking point, at which time they typically leave their post as key players in the community. This research not only contributes to identifying and operationalizing the concept of “communities” in community-based research but presents a new cultural phenomenon: the emergence of “Wonder Women.” Further research into this phenomenon is required to determine if they are occurring elsewhere and to what extent. Moreover, this dissertation informs the work of non-profit organizations working in the United States. The importance of true community participation and ways to prevent volunteer burnout are emphasized in the lessons learned from the research.

The Master´s thesis aims to assess the overall CSR strategy of Tesco by using KORP analysis. It also evaluates the CSR projects of the company through media analysis. Research has shown that the company is targeting its activities to social and environmental pillar. They are both ranked above average . The economic pillar has the potential to be improved, therefore there are some recommendation how to achieve it . The work points to effectively set CSR strategy of the company

Thesis deals with the human resources management of the Czech non-profit organizations. The theoretical part focuses on the description and the importance of the voluntary sector and key areas of personnel management. Practical part analyzes the practical working environment in particular non-profit organization in order to assess the level of corporate culture, the performance of the organization and performance of individual employees.

Diplomová práce se zabývá možnostmi financování neziskových organizací a finanční analýzou, která je nástrojem k jejich efektivnímu řízení. Teoretické poznatky jsou konfrontovány s praxí na příkladě občanského sdružení IQ Roma servis z Brna. Práce se podrobně zabývá možnostmi financování činnosti a projektů neziskových organizací, charakteristikou potenciálních partnerů a příklady z praxe. Teoretická část dále poskytuje metodiku finanční analýzy upravenou pro oblast neziskových organizací. Praktická část práce představuje občanské sdružení IQ Roma servis, které se věnuje začleňování romského etnika do majoritní společnosti. Na základě jeho projektů je prozkoumáno financování činnosti této organizace a za použití finančních výkazů je provedena finanční analýza.

The aim of this Master Thesis is to analyze the processes of human resource management in non-profit organization USE-IT Prague. The theoretical part is an introduction into the topic of non-profit organization's management in general, volunteerism and specifics of human resource management in non-profit organization's practice. The practical part introduces the background of USE-IT Prague non-profit organization and analyzes each activity of its human resource management, especially recruitment of volunteers, their motivation, development, team-work and communication. The support of the analysis are results of a survey among USE-IT Prague's volunteers. In the last part those activities are evaluated, compared with the theoretical knowledge acquired and, if necessary, are provided recommendations for improvement.

This work deals with networking activities and communication of non-profit organizations and their representatives with external subjects. Networking is a strategic tool, which NGOs can use to make contacts and get new opportunities. As well as in the private sector non-profit organizations must deal with many obstacles. Most often it is a lack of resources. Due to lack of funds non-profit organizations cannot afford to employ experts. Therefore we can see that non-profit organizations struggle with a certain amount of unprofessionalism. They lack the strategy and they do not have set organizational processes. Communication with external subjects or networking activities are not an exception. This has been fully compensated with their energy and enthusiasm. Employees of non-profit organizations are not motivated financially but by doing a good thing. The study shows that employees of non-profit organizations are interested in new trends, what networking undoubtedly is.

The thesis deals with the legal aspects of civic associations and connections with their transformation into guilds as a result of the entry into force of the New Civil Code. It also deals with the issue of lack of legal certainty in some areas of accounting and taxation. This section is dedicated to the largest part of the thesis, which displays typical transaction of guildss. All this part is dealt in parallel look of simple accounting and double-entry bookkeeping. In conclusion, these transactions are considered as all transactions of fictitious guild and transferred into annual reports and tax returns.

The main goal of the diploma thesis is to analyze the communication strategy of the non-profit organization Otevřená OKNA, z. ú. including its assessment, and to suggest an optimization of the communication strategy based on this analysis. The real possibilities of non-profit organizations and the environment in which it is located and operates were taken into account. The theoretical part defines and formulates the fundamental findings related to the non-profit sector, non-profit organizations, management, the concept of strategic management, communication, marketing, PR and communication strategy of a non-profit organization. The practical part consists of an introduction of the non-profit organization Otevřená OKNA, z. ú., and of an analysis of the organization communication's current state on which a new proposal of communication strategy was made.

This thesis deals with the issue of vulnerable children. This topic is very current as a legal reform on social and legal protection of children was adopted in 2013 promoting the development of children in a family environment by professionalization of the foster care. The reform should help reduce the number of children in institutional care, as the Czech Republic ranks at the top of the list while assigning children into institutions, compared to other developed countries in the European Union. The aim of this work is to analyze the funding of foster care and care of children in orphanages by government and by private incomes. The theoretical part describes the state social policy concerning the care of vulnerable children and describes the types of non-profit organizations working in this area. The practical part analyzes and compares the types of the care of vulnerable children in terms of institutional arrangements and financing. The thesis also examines what the costs are for both a child in foster care and a child placed in orphanages.

This diploma thesis deals with the role that non-governmental non-profit organizations play in the integration of immigrants into Czech society. Its aim is to introduce their activities, ways of cooperation with other participants, target groups and potential constraints. The first part contains a basic overview of various models of integration and presents multiculturalism as the principal theoretical approach. The second part is focused on the legal and financial status of non-governmental non-profit organizations. Afterwards, the thesis explores the history of immigration into the Czech Republic and the main legislation. The last part introduces a case study of Integration Centre Prague, which reveals the real potential of non-profit organizations in the process of integration.
