A finite element model of fibre metal laminate (FML) fuselage was developed in order to evaluate its impact response under survivable crash event. To create a reliable crash finite element (FE) model of FML fuselage, a ‘building block approach’ is adapted. It involves a series of validation and verification tasks in order to establish reliable material and damage models, verified impact model with structural instability and large displacement and verified individual fuselage structure under crash event. This novel development methodology successfully produced an FE model to simulate crash of both aluminium alloy and FML fuselage under survivable crash event using ABAQUS/Explicit. On the other hand, this allows the author to have privilege to evaluate crashworthiness of fuselage that implements FML fuselage skin for the whole fuselage section for the first time in aircraft research field and industry. The FE models consist of a two station fuselage section with one meter longitudinal length which is based on commercial Boeing 737 aircraft. For FML fuselage, the classical aluminium alloy skin was replaced by GLARE grade 5-2/1. The impact response of both fuselages was compared to each other and the results were discussed in terms of energy dissipation, crushing distance, failure modes, failure mechanisms and acceleration response at floor-level. Overall, it was observed that FML fuselage responded similarly to aluminium alloy fuselage with some minor differences which conclusively gives great confidence to aircraft designer to use FML as fuselage skin for the whole fuselage section. In terms of crushing distance, FML fuselage skin contributed to the failure mechanisms of the fuselage section that lead to higher crushing distance than in aluminium alloy fuselage. The existence of various failure modes within FML caused slight differences from the aluminium fuselage in terms of deformation process and energy dissipation. These complex failure modes could potentially be manipulated to produce future aircraft structure with better crashworthiness performance.

This paper presents the axial compressive behaviour of stub concrete-filled columns with elliptical stainless steel and carbon steel hollow sections. The finite element method developed via ABAQUS/Standard solver was used to carry out the simulations. The accuracy of the FE modelling and the proposed confined concrete stress-strain model were verified against experimental results. A parametric study on stub concrete-filled columns with various elliptical hollow sections made with stainless steel and carbon steel was conducted. The comparisons and analyses presented in this paper outline the effect of hollow sectional configurations to the axial compressive behaviour of elliptical concrete-filled steel tubular columns, especially the merits of using stainless steel hollow sections is highlighted.

Modeling and Control of Tensegrity-Membrane SystemsYang, Shu 30 June 2016 (has links)
Tensegrity-membrane systems are a class of new bar-tendon-membrane systems. Such novel systems can be treated as extensions of tensegrity structures and are generally lightweight and deployable. These two major advantages enable tensegrity-membrane systems to become one of the most promising candidates for lightweight space structures and gossamer spacecraft.
In this dissertation, modeling and control of tensegrity-membrane systems is studied. A systematic method is developed to determine the equilibrium conditions of general tensegrity-membrane systems. Equilibrium conditions can be simplified when the systems are in symmetric configurations. For one-stage symmetric systems, analytical equilibrium conditions can be determined.
Three mathematical models are developed to study the dynamics of tensegrity-membrane systems. Two mathematical models are developed based on the nonlinear finite element method. The other model is a control-oriented model, which is suitable for control design. Numerical analysis is conducted using these three models to study the mechanical properties of tensegrity-membrane systems.
Two control strategies are developed to regulate the deployment process of tensegrity-membrane systems. The first control strategy is to deploy the system by a nonlinear adaptive controller and use a linear H∞ controller for rapid system stabilization. The second control strategy is to regulate the dynamics of tensegrity-membrane systems using a linear parameter-varying (LPV) controller during system deployment. A gridding method is employed to discretize the system operational region in order to carry out the LPV control synthesis. / Ph. D.

Nonlinear Analysis of Conventional and Microstructure Dependent Functionally Graded Beams under Thermo-mechanical LoadsArbind, Archana 2012 August 1900 (has links)
Nonlinear finite element models of functionally graded beams with power-law variation of material, accounting for the von-Karman geometric nonlinearity and temperature dependent material properties as well as microstructure dependent length scale have been developed using the Euler-Bernoulli as well as the first-order and third- order beam theories. To capture the size effect, a modified couple stress theory with one length scale parameter is used. Such theories play crucial role in predicting accurate deflections of micro- and nano-beam structures. A general third order beam theory for microstructure dependent beam has been developed for functionally graded beams for the first time using a modified couple stress theory with the von Karman nonlinear strain. Finite element models of the three beam theories have been developed. The thermo-mechanical coupling as well as the bending-stretching coupling play significant role in the deflection response. Numerical results are presented to show the effect of nonlinearity, power-law index, microstructural length scale, and boundary conditions on the bending response of beams under thermo-mechanical loads. In general, the effect of microstructural parameter is to stiffen the beam, while shear deformation has the effect of modeling more realistically as a flexible beam.
