Data integration issues for a farm GIS-based spatial decision support system

Jones, Marion January 2003 (has links)
Farming has a unique role to play in shaping the landscape and enhancing our environment. In recent years, the industry has declined and no longer makes a significant contribution to the national economy. The impact of animal diseases such as BSE and Foot and Mouth has reduced consumer confidence in the quality of food produced. The UK Government, through the introduction of funding schemes, is aiding the recovery of the industry by encouraging farmers to diversify their farming enterprise. One option is the conversion from intensive to organic farming practices, a decision that involves a high level of risk and uncertainty. This research proposes a role for GIS as a decision support tool for a farm manager exploring the options for organic conversion. Where data is captured and held in multiple applications, the GIS-based Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) must integrate data and models. The use of the GIS must be intuitive, allowing the farm manager to explore different scenarios for land allocation effectively. The interface must allow the amendment of input parameters and present the results from each scenario in a clear, understandable format. This functionality raises important data handling issues that are investigated through the development of a prototype GIS. The identification and assessment of relevant datasets and the seamless integration of data are fundamental to the design of the GIS. Metadata, adhering to international guidelines, are identified as the chief means for discovering, exploring and acquiring spatial datasets from diverse sources. An assessment of the quality and accuracy of the data is essential if they are to be the basis for decision support. Interoperability issues are discussed and suggestions are proposed for the successful integration of data and models for the SDSS through the GIS interface. By providing a visual medium in which alternative strategies can be evaluated, the GIS will enhance the quality of the final decision made by the farm manager.

An examination of the social structure of the women's unit, Oakalla Prison Farm

Coutts, Dorothy Mae January 1961 (has links)
This is an examination of the social structure of a women's prison. The prison has five primary tasks: custody, internal order, self-maintenance, punishment and reformation. Verbal priority is given to reformation, but custody and internal order take precedence in actual practice. Matrons prefer to play their roles in different ways. Those who subscribe to a habit-forming philosophy of reformation prefer working on the morning shift. Their views and practices are in harmony with the requirements of custody. Those who subscribe to a basic-change philosophy prefer the more relaxed and permissive atmosphere of the afternoon shift. Their views and practices are frequently in conflict with the requirements of custody. And structural pressure tends to force these matrons to become more custodial over time. In exchange for obedience and conformity in some spheres the matrons agree not to tamper with the attitudes and values of the inmates. This bargain for compliance seems essential given the present social structure of the prison. The inmates suffer from the deprivation of liberty, goods and services, heterosexual relationships, autonomy, security and, at the Women's Unit, privacy. The addicts and "rounders" adopt cohesive modes of response to these deprivations. "Squealers", "hack lovers" and "part players" adopt alienative modes of response. The inmates differ by groups in their characteristic responses to official oppression. The younger addict groups rebel habitually, the older groups conform overtly but do not change their basic values. / Arts, Faculty of / Anthropology, Department of / Graduate

The Study of Assessed Farm Values in Grey County

MacDonald, Patricia Dianne 04 1900 (has links)

The problem studied in this thesis is variations in assessed farm values in a selected area of Grey County, Ontario. A random sample of eighty farms was taken from four townships located in the vicinity of the city of Owen Sound.

Data was collected on distance to the city, farm size, quality of buildings, soil, land use and type of road. Hypotheses were developed and tested with the use of multiple regression. The analysis provided empirical proof of the validity of the a priori hypotheses. The directional impact of the variables can be predicted.

Two of the variables, quality of buildings and size of farm were found to be statistically significant. The low level of explanation of the variation in farm values is related to the size of the sample and to the relative uniformity of conditions in the area being investigated.

The use of actual sale values, a larger sample and a more diverse area near a city that is an important market centre is recommended as a basis for further research.
/ Thesis / Candidate in Philosophy
