A web-based medical radionuclide databaseJue, Tracy M. 24 May 1999 (has links)
Currently the Food and Drug Administration publishes radiopharmaceutical
information for physicians to choose appropriate medical diagnosis and therapy for their
patients. The primary functions of these radiopharmaceuticals are diagnosis and
delivering doses to a patient with appropriate energy, biological half life, chemical
behavior, and radiological half life. These radiopharmaceuticals preferentially react with
certain type of cells. Diagnosis or therapy must be accurately prepared for and planned
by medical professionals. The fast access to the internet has become a key tool for
medical professionals to obtain this type of information. A web page has been developed
that links nuclear and biological data to radiopharmaceutical information. Queries can be
performed on this database to sort the radiopharmaceuticals by radiological half life,
gamma energy, biological half life, medical application, chemical information or other
parameters. This capability allows medical professionals and scientists to select
radiopharmaceuticals by their characteristics. There are approximately 100 medical
isotopes in the database. / Graduation date: 2000

The utilisation of electronic databases by postgraduate students in the faculty of humanities at the University of LimpopoDlamini, Tintswalo Fikile January 2020 (has links)
Thesis (M. A. (Information Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2020 / This study examined whether postgraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Limpopo are aware of, and are using electronic databases optimally to locate information for their academic research. The study employed a quantitative research design through the use of a questionnaire as a data collection method to determine students’ accessibility and levels of awareness of electronic databases; to measure the extent to which they use electronic databases for academic research; to assess the form of training which they attended on the use of electronic databases; to identify factors that determine their usage and non-usage of electronic databases; and to establish challenges that they encounter in using electronic databases. The accidental sampling method was used to select the participants.
The study found that most participants are aware of the existence of electronic databases. Even if they indicated to have used some of these databases at UL library, it appears that they are referring to Google and Google Scholar. This is despite the fact that the majority of them showed to have attended some sort of training on the use of electronic databases. Factors that influence their choice and use of specific electronic databases include familiarity, unlimited access, multidisciplinary as well as their capabilities. Problems and challenges encountered in the use of electronic databases are related to remote access. It becomes difficult for them to access these databases when they are not on campus. Lack of knowledge and skills to search these electronic databases effectively hindered their optimal usage. Other problems identified by postgraduate students include: slow internet connectivity; inadequately networked computers; lack of access to low-cost printing facilities in the library; inability to use advanced search strategies on most databases; and a lack of awareness of most e-resources. It is recommended that studies of this nature should be conducted in other faculties so that the library should identify electronic databases that are not used and to consider cancelling subscriptions to unused electronic databases in order to save costs.

Development of a functional prototype of an environmental risk assessment parameter database on the World-Wide WebPotter, Nathan Kent 06 August 1997 (has links)
The goal of the project was to develop a functional prototype of an environmental
risk assessment parameter database on the World-Wide Web. The ability to develop a
consolidated environmental database has become possible due to the phenomenal growth
of the Internet and the World-Wide Web over the past few years. A large number of
environmental resources do currently exist; however, with the large volume of
information available, access, management, reliability, and retrievability have become
increasingly difficult.
To illustrate the prototype database, a practical environmental concern and the
tools necessary to evaluate and characterize that concern were needed. Uranium (U)
daughters leaching from abandoned mill tailing piles at three abandoned uranium mines
in southwestern Colorado were chosen to demonstrate the database concept. The
RESRAD environmental pathway modeling code served as the evaluation and
characterization tool. Due to the size and complexity of RESRAD, a single radionuclide
release rate equation was isolated as a controllable component of the code. The equation
was a small part of the water pathway factor and examined the rate at which
radionuclides absorbed in soil were leached by infiltrating water. This serves as the
source term for groundwater contamination and directly applies to the U progeny
leaching from mill tailing piles scenario. Parameters selected from the equation dealt with the background data that directly influenced the mobility of contaminates in the environment. Environmental data for the three Colorado sites were gathered and interpreted. Probability Density Functions (PDFs) were developed for input parameters and the results were then incorporated into the web site. / Graduation date: 1998
