Evaluating the Effectiveness of Multiple Presentations for Open Student Model in EER-Tutor

As one of the central problems in the area of Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs), student modelling has been widely used to assist in systems’ decision making and students’ learning. On the one hand, by reasoning about students’ knowledge in the instructional domain, a system is able to adapt its pedagogical actions in order to provide a customized learning environment. These actions may include individualized problem-selection, tailored instructions and feedback, as well as updating the presentation of student models. On the other hand, students can reflect on their own learning progress by viewing individual Open Student Models (OSMs) and enhance their meta-cognitive skills by learning from the system’s estimation of their knowledge levels. It is believed that making the information in the student model available to students can raise students’ awareness of their strengths and weaknesses in the corresponding domain and hence allow them to develop a more effective and efficient way of learning. An OSM has been developed in EER-Tutor. EER-Tutor is a web-enhanced ITS that supports university students in learning conceptual database modelling. Students design Enhanced Entity-Relationship (EER) diagrams and receive different level of feedback in a problem-solving environment. The pedagogical decisions on feedback generation and problem selection are made according to student models. Previously, student models in EER-Tutor are presented to students on request as skill meters. Skill meters have been proved useful in helping students to improve their meta-cognitive skills. However, as the simplest presentation of a student model, skill meters contain very limited information. Some studies show that an OSM with multiple views is more effective since it supports individual preferences and different educational purposes. The focus of our work is to develop a variety of presentations for the OSM in EER-Tutor. For this purposes, we have modified the system to include not only skill meters but also other presentation styles. An evaluation study has been performed after the development. Both subjective and objective results have been collected. This thesis presents the extended EER-Tutor, followed by the analysis of the evaluation study.

Technology-enhaced support for lifelong competence development in higher education

A trace of lifelong-learning qualifications has become more mandatory at the European and even at world level. However, for higher education courses, the former could imply complex learning designs and abundance of data to monitor, analyze, and report. This work combine the ideas of personalized, competence-based, and social learning by providing course lifecycle support through competence-based design, outcome based assessment, social learning context analytics, and open student modeling visualizations. A series of studies using a virtual learning environment exploited the idea of the approach and revealed promising results. These results demonstrated the approach helped students and teachers to trace learning outcomes of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) in higher education courses. Thus, this thesis extends the approach of higher education to a larger collection of learning objects for designing, assessing, and analyzing courses. Moreover, this approach verifies its capability of supporting social context visualization for online and blended personalized education. / Un rastreo del aprendizaje a lo largo de la vida es cada vez más obligatorio en Europa y el mundo. Sin embargo, en educación superior, esto implica diseños de cursos más complejos y abundancia de datos para rastrear, analizar e informar. Este trabajo combina aprendizaje personalizado, basado en competencias y social, apoyando diferentes instantes de los cursos universitarios a través de diseño basado en competencias, evaluación basada en resultados, analíticas del contexto social del aprendizaje y modelos abiertos del estudiante. Una serie de estudios exploró el enfoque revelando resultados prometedores. Se demostró el apoyo a estudiantes y maestros para monitorizar el aprendizaje según el EQF en sus cursos. Así, esta tesis extiende la educación superior a una colección más grande de objetos de aprendizaje para el diseño, la evaluación y el análisis de cualificaciones. Además, brinda visualización del contexto social para educación personalizada en ambientes mixtos y en línea.

Entorno de aprendizaje virtual adaptativo soportado por un modelo de usuario integral

El objetivo de esta tesis es mejorar la efectividad y eficiencia de los entornos de aprendizaje virtual. Para lograr este propósito se define un Modelo de Usuario que considera las características del usuario, el contexto y la Interacción. Estas tres dimensiones son integradas en un Modelo de Usuario Integral (MUI) para proveer adaptación de contenido, formato y actividades en entornos educativos con heterogeneidad de usuarios, tecnologías e interacciones. Esta heterogeneidad genera la entrega de contenidos, formatos y actividades inadecuadas para los estudiantes. La particularización del MUI en un entorno educativo es definida Modelo de Estudiante Integral (MEI). Las principales aportaciones de esta tesis son la definición y validación de un MUI, la utilización de un MEI abierto para propiciar la reflexión de los estudiantes sobre sus procesos de aprendizaje, la integración tecnológica con independencia de plataforma y la validación del MEI con estudiantes en escenarios reales. / he aim of this thesis is to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of virtual learning environments. To that end, it defines a user model that considers at the same time the characteristics of the user, the context and the interaction. These three dimensions are embodied into an Integrated user model (MUI, from the Spanish Modelo de Usuario Integral) to provide adaptation of content, format and educational activities in heterogeneous environments of users, technologies and interactions. One problem that arises in such heterogeneous environments is that inadequate content, format and activities are delivered to students. The MUI is a general model, and as an example of its application, an Integrate Learner Model (MEI, from the Spanish Modelo de Estudiante Integral) is introduced in an educational setting. The main contributions of this thesis are the definition and validation of a MUI, the use of an open MEI to promote student reflection on their learning experience, technology integration with platform independence and validation of the MEI with students in the real world.
