Structure-property relationships in conductive nanowire networks

This thesis studies networks of silver nanowires as a transparent conducting electrode material and presents an investigation into the relationship between electrical and optical properties in the networks. The work focusses on two main aspects: the production of networks via different deposition methods; and the development of a predictive model based on theory that relates the sheet resistance to the optical transmittance. The deposition methods of drop-casting, bar-coating and spray-coating are used to create networks and the randomness of these networks is compared using image analysis in ImageJ, a public domain image processing program, and Wolfram Mathematica, a computer algebra program. It is determined that spray-coating results in the most random networks, therefore all subsequent experiments are carried out using this as the deposition method. Annealing condition tests are carried out on the nanowire networks to determine the optimal annealing conditions required to burn off poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) remaining from the nanowire synthesis process and sinter the nanowire junctions to improve network conductivity. The sheet resistances and optical transmittances of the networks are measured and compared to networks created by other research groups. It is found that the networks created in this study exhibited similar optical and electrical properties to those in the literature, obtaining Rs = 100 Ω/sq for T = 81%.The developed model is based on theory and relates the sheet resistance to the optical transmittance using only the length and width of the nanowires used in the network and the mean network coverage as variables. The model can be used to predict the properties of a network if these factors are known. The model is compared with experimental data both from this study and from the literature, along with simulated data from the literature that was obtained by Monte Carlo methods. It is shown that there is an excellent fit between the model and all data that it is compared with. It is demonstrated that < 1% of the network coverage is greater than 2 for typical nanowire networks, proving that the networks are two-dimensional and therefore do not require a bulk regime to describe the relationship, as has been suggested in prior work.

Resistivity and Optical Transmittance Simulation on Metal Embedded Transparent Conducting Oxide Thin Films

abstract: This work focuses on simulation of electrical resistivity and optical behaviors of thin films, where an Ag or Au thin layer is embedded in zinc oxide. Enhanced conductivity and transparency were earlier achieved with multilayer structured transparent conducting oxide (TCO) sandwich layer with metal (TCO/metal/TCO). Sputtering pattern of metal layer is simulated to obtain the morphology, covered area fraction, and the percolation strength. The resistivity as a function of the metal layer thickness fits the modeled trend of covered area fraction beyond the percolation threshold. This result not only presents the robustness of the simulation, but also demonstrates the influence of metal morphology in multilayer structure. Effective medium coefficients are defined from the coverage and percolation strength to obtain simulated optical transmittance which matches experimental observation. The coherence of resistivity and optical transmittance validates the simulation of the sputtered pattern and the incorporation of percolation theory in the model. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. An investigation into the application of light sources in the treatment of glaucoma

Glaucoma is a blinding disease characterized by damage to the optic nerve and often caused by an increase in the intra-ocular pressure. Glaucoma affects from 2% to 8% of the South African population, depending on race and age. Primary Open-angle Glaucoma (POAG) is found mostly in patients above the age of 40 years. POAG is more prevalent in black people, with the number of black persons contracting the disease double that of persons of European origin. In South Africa, the prevalence of blindness is estimated to be 0,6%, thus 240 000 out of a total of 40 million. Glaucoma is responsible for an estimated 20% of the total number of blind people, thus approximately 48 000. The treatment of glaucoma in Africa, and particularly in rural areas, presents many unresolved problems. Conventional conservative treatment with eye drops is difficult, due to the following reasons: -- Logistical problems of providing patients with a supply of medication. -- Appropriate use of drops requires education, together with a high degree of personal compliance. -- Cost of medical treatment. Patients require life-long treatment. Eye drops cost approximately R100,00 per person per month. Thus, over a ten-year period, the cost would be R12 000,00 per person and R576 million for the estimated 48 000 sufferers. Conventional surgery is not very effective, due to the following reasons: -- Scarring takes place at the surgical site. -- Can be performed only in main centres with microsurgical facilities and competent staff. -- Requires travelling expenses, not only for surgery, but also for periodical follow-up examinations. -- Surgical complications are not uncommon. Conventional laser surgery is not effective, for the following reasons: -- Can be performed only in main centres with laser surgery facilities and competent staff. -- Requires travelling expenses, not only for surgery, but also for periodical follow-up examinations. -- Complications of surgery are not uncommon. This dissertation describes an investigation concerning treatment of glaucoma, with specific reference to the use of optical energy sources. The spectral transmission of the human sclera is investigated. Alternative methods of sourcing optical energy to the ciliary processes are presented and compared. Results obtained can be summarized as follows: -- The spectral transmission of the sclera was measured. -- Trans-scleral transmission was measured to be very low (less than 5%). Baigiamajame magistro darbe suprojektuotos ir pagamintos dviejų rūšių šviesos koncentratorinės sistemos: jungtinė parabolinė ir sistema su Frenelio lęšiu. Atlikta saulės elementų efektyvumo analizė, išnagrinėtos šviesą koncentruojančių sistemų rūšys bei aptarti jų optiniai parametrai. Frenelio lęšis ir koncentratorinių sistemų laikančiosios konstrukcijos pagamintos vakuuminio formavimo būdu, ieškant pigesnės gamybos technologijos. Baigiamajame darbe atlikti optinio pralaidumo ir lūžio rodiklio, matomos šviesos bangų ilgių ruože, tyrimai bei saulės elementų, esančių šviesos koncentratorinėse sistemose,voltamperinių ir voltvatinių charakteristikų tyrimai. Iš tyrimų rezultatų nustatyti šviesos koncentravimo laipsniai. Darbe diskutuojama apie pigių optinių sistemų galimus pritaikymus ir jų tobulinimo būdus. Išnagrinėjus teorinę ir praktinę dalis, pateiktos išvados ir pasiūlymai. Darbą sudaro 8 dalys: įvadas, saulės elementų efektyvumo ribos, saulės šviesos koncentratoriai ir jų panaudojimas fotoelektrinėse sistemose, eksperimentinių tyrimų metodika, prototipų gamyba, eksperimentiniai tyrimai, išvados, literatūros sąrašas. Atskirai pridedami darbo priedai. / Concentrated PV systems (compound parabolic and Fresnel CPV) have been designed and investigated. The efficiency of solar cells and the types of light concentrated systems have been analyzed and their optical parameters have been discussed. Fresnel lens and the CPV system holding structure have been fabricated by means of vacuum forming machine in this way making the technology of production less expensive. Optical transmittance and refractive index of Fresnel lens were measured in the range of visible light wavelengths. Current-voltage and voltage-power characteristics of solar cells built inside the CPV systems were investigated, based on results the degree of light concentration by Fresnel lens and compound parabolic CPV has been determined. Some discussions regarding possible applications of concentrated PV systems containing the Fresnel lens as well as possible ways of CPV design improvements are given in current work. After analysed theoretical and practical parts, conclusions and suggestions are proposed. Thesis structure: introduction, theoretical and experimental parts, results of experiments, conclusions and references. Thesis consist of: 82 p. text without appendixes, 95 pictures, 13 tables, 22 bibliographical entries. Appendixes included.
