Motivation på distans : en kvalitativ undersökning om hur den upplevda inre motivationen påverkas av ett påtvingat distansarbete

Gabriel, Amanda, Argus, Alexander January 2021 (has links)
The digitalization that has come through technological development has been the starting point of the change with how and where we work. With Covid-19 many organizations have had to embrace the change earlier than anyone would have thought, and many workplaces have been forced to place the employees' work to their own homes. It also forces many organizations to overthink how to keep productivity high while the work and leadership is being managed remotely. The employee's motivation is a critical factor when it comes to productivity, and how do you make sure that the motivation stays high when individuals who are not accustomed to remote work now are forced to do it? The purpose of this essay is to study how individuals' motivation, who earlier have only been working from an office, now are affected by forced remote work. This will be done through a qualitative study where we examine how changed circumstances connected to three factors - perceived autonomy, fellowship and competence have affected the individuals. The factors are part of Deci and Ryan’s (2000) Self-Determination Theory and are important ingredients for internal motivation. The result shows that the perceived internal motivation, for most, has not changed, a lot because of technological tools which have worked as a good substitute for physical meetings and relations. However, the result shows that age seems to be a crucial factor for how the internal motivation is affected by forced remote work, where the younger study objects experienced a declining internal motivation. For that reason, age is an interesting factor to look into for further research.  The essay starts off with a background description of remote work and motivation as a phenomenon. This is followed by a theoretical review from the framework that is underlying for the essay and the analysis model. Further a method section will be displayed which is followed by a presentation of the empirical data and the analysis of the data. The essay ends with a discussion about the results, a conclusion and suggestions for further research.
