This thesis explains the origins of the 1936 Hull-Alfaro Treaty between Panama and the United States. It examines how Panamanian politics and Panama’s relationship with the United States changed over the decades leading up to this new treaty. The Panama Railway and then the Panama Canal placed Panama in a unique position within the growing American Empire as the isthmus linked the United States to the resources it needed to fuel its domestic industry and to markets for its manufactured goods. Recurrent political unrest and economic challenges within Panama forced the Panamanian government to attempt to renegotiate its relationship with the United States. The concept of the double in literature has long enjoyed controversy. Originally, its purpose was to function purely as a comic device or to create an atmosphere conducive to the theme of mistaken identity. As the artistic and social milieu changed, the double came to embody unconscious desire in the form of a projected second self. Although its popularity as a theme seems to have waned in recent times, the double has re-emerged with a new twist as it has moved into the realm of postmodernism. Panamanian writer, Enrique Jaramillo Levi, has become synonymous with the concept although to date the theme has not been researched at all in its application to his work. This thesis deals with the treatment of this literary device in the work of Jaramillo Levi from a modern and postmodern perspective by using representative writers from around the world.

A Neogene contourite depositional system was identified and mapped along the DeSoto Slope in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, U.S.A. A series of drift deposits comprising the larger contourite depositional system were interpreted from a 2-D industry seismic data set. The now subsurface drift deposits are adjacent to the anomalous seabed feature, the DeSoto Canyon, and these data suggest contourite deposition and ocean currents are in integral part of the canyon’s depositional history. The contourite depositional system is underlain by an extensive, middle Miocene aged, erosional unconformity formed by ocean currents. The timing of this erosional surface is in alignment with the widely accepted premise that the Miocene represented a transitional period in Gulf of Mexico basin circulation. The discovery of this contourite depositional system adds to an established list of Miocene-aged features pointing to the onset of enhanced Loop Current circulation in the Neogene Gulf of Mexico.
