The performance of the Rhodes 22 GHz radio telescope and its improvement are discussed in this thesis. The reflector surfaces of the Cassegrain antenna were surveyed and the surface errors minimised, while the magnitude of thermal and gravitational defomations was calculated. The design and operation of the microwave front end has been improved, and the mixer performance characterised. The continuum and spectral line receivers and their sensitivity are described. The aperture efficiency, which has been raised from 0,47 to 0,57, was deduced from solar and lunar observations and atmospheric attenuation measurements. The antenna beam pattern was also obtained from the observations, with the aid of a computer program, and is compared to that predicted for the telescope.

This thesis reports on the design, construction, testing and operation of the spectral line and continuum receivers built for the 22 GHz Radio Telescope. First results from 'the telescope were obtained and have been analysed to give an estimate of system efficiency. Tests have been performed on the front end and in particular on the 22 GHz mixer in order to determine the minimum detectable temperature. The Sun, Moon and major planets are sources suitable for antenna alignment and consequently a literature survey of emission at 22 GHz from elements of the Solar system has been made.

A spherometer is often used to precisely measure the radius of curvature of a spherical surface. It can also measure the vertex radius of a more complex surface such as an off-axis parabola (OAP). This paper provides a reliable algorithm to find the vertex radius of an OAP by solving a few equations based on the test geometry. This algorithm can also be easily expanded to any conic surface with high-order aspheric coefficients. The algorithm was verified by measuring an 8-inch diameter OAP and comparing the results with its known prescription. Results show good agreement. An example of measuring the vertex radius of a 4-m diameter OAP is also presented. In addition to this, a calculation was done to show that the coma and astigmatism are independent of the clocking of the spherometer on the optic. Detta projekt handlar o att bygga sitt eget hem. För tillfället är majoriteten av de småhus som byggs i Sverige kataloghus. De konstrueras så billigt som möjligt för att passa så många som möjligt och kan anses vara en fortsättning av de typologier som utvecklades under egnahem-rörelsen, som i sin tur plockade mycket från svensk stugtradition. De har dock utvecklats och funnit form från huvudsakligen ekonomi och anpassning till byggregler istället för brukarens behov. Mitt mål har varit att utmana detta genom att rita en byggnad som är uppförd med traditionella tekniker som tittar längre bak i tiden, och som jag valt på andra kriterier såsom miljöpåverkan, inomhusklimat och möjlighet till expansion utan att behöva kassera material. Den färdiga byggnaden är förhoppningsvis möjlig att konstruera på egen hand, samtidigt som den är anpassad till brukarens behov och kan utvecklas i takt med att de behoven förändras. / This project is about the tradition of constructing your own home. At the moment, the majority of small houses built in sweden are catalogue-houses. They are constructed in the cheapest way possible and designed to suit as many as possible. They could be considered an evolution from the type houses of the early 20th century, evolved within, and from, the swedish building codes and regulations. My aim was to challenge the status-quo by selecting building techniques not based on price or whats common practice at the moment, but to look further back in time and prioritizing living climate, eco-friendly construction and flexibility. The finished building is hopefully possible to construct by yourself, suitable to ones needs and flexible enough to evolve as they do.
