Overthrow the autothrone: Structures for people, not parking

January 2018 (has links)
We have too much parking. The automobile-oriented utopia promised by optimistic modern architects like Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright did not come to pass. Personal motor vehicles have indeed become ubiquitous, but the effect in urban environments, at least has been more tyranny than democracy. Cars have taken over the city. Huge areas of urban land are dedicated almost exclusively to cars, and narrow-minded engineer-driven planning continues to widen streets, raise speed limits, and increase parking space, to the detriment of alternate (and by most metrics superior) methods of transportation, or any other potential use of urban space. Additionally, with technological advances allowing car-sharing and the projected explosion of self-driving cars, parking garages are likely soon to become obsolete. We don't have enough housing. As more people move to cities, vulnerable established communities are displaced, property taxes soar, and city footprints balloon. Increased residential density, through both n construction and infill, can assuage these problems while decreasing the necessity of automobile travel. I will begin my research by analyzing the typology of the American parking garage and its relationship to the urban fabric. This analysis will yield a taxonomy of the formal and material components of parking structures. Many components will be challenges to human habitation; a few will be benefits; all will present opportunities for a symbolically and actively revolutionary form of urban housing. From this taxonomy, I will develop a catalog of strategies for responding to these challenges at least to address them and ideally to reframe them as assets. I will test these strategies by applying them to a local parking garage, adapting it as a multifamily housing complex and alternate transportation hub. These strategies could later be enacted city- and nation-wide to transform a mainstay of stubborn car culture into an urban asset. / 0 / SPK / specialcollections@tulane.edu

Návrh rekonstrukce ulice Húskova v Brně / Reconstruction design of Húskova Street in Brno

Přívara, Jakub January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis is reconstruction design of Húskova Street in Brno, which is located in Černovice district. Static traffic, cycling and movement of pedestrians will be solved within reconstruction. The project was processed in four variant solutions. Variant A is emphasised on maximal number of parking space in draft form 45° angled parking driving ahead, variant B takes into account existing condition, the number of parking space and cycling, variant C leaves current status and adjustment consists of marking by horizontal road marking, in variant D is once again effort for maximal number of parking space, but with driving to the place by reversing. Evaluation of variants was done and variant B was chosen for detailed processing

Studie dopravního řešení ulic Meluzínova, Františky Skaunicové a Komprdova v Brně / Road design of streets Meluzínova, Františky Skaunicové a Komprdova in Brno - study

Tkáčová, Klára January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to design varied reconstruction solutions of Meluzínova, Františky Skaunicové and Komprdova streets. Given the current situation, emphasis was placed on appropriate solution of static transport and overall concept of the transport space that will meet today's requirements. All variants were then developped in form of a study, into situation drawings and model cross sections. By a multi-criteria evaluation the optimal variant was chosen and further elaborated in detail.

Návrh revitalizace ulice Fryčajova v Brně / Revitalization design of Fryčajova Street in Brno

Kolbábek, Jiří January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is made to propose revitalization of the Fryčajova street. It is elaborated in two ways which are focused on different properties. Priority of variant A is to creat so much parking spaces as is possible. Beside this variant B makes street more safeful for cyclists using pictograms and bicycle path.

Evaluating LoRaWAN for IoT applications by developing a wireless parking space monitoring sensor

Jontegen, Felix, Good, Emma January 2018 (has links)
The process of finding a parking space can be a tedious task that drivers spent too much time on today. With the rising threat from global warming, reducing the time spent driving is vital. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the use of LoRaWAN for urban IoT applications by developing a sensor system for parking space monitoring to make this process easier. The main component of the developed prototype of the sensor system consists of a The Things UNO, which is a modified version of the Arduino Leonardo with an integrated RN2483 LoRaWAN transceiver module. Two types of sensors, an ultrasonic distance sensor and a magnetometer, were tested for car detecting abilities in the sensor system. The distance sensor was proven to be the more reliable sensor for detecting cars, but a combination of both a distance sensor and a magnetometer can be used to improve the power usage of the system. LoRaWAN has a high potential to work great in a parking space monitoring system and other urban IoT applications, but its coverage and reliability in different conditions requires more testing.

Problematika parkování ve městě České Budějovice / The issue of parking in České Budějovice

Sezemská, Stephanie January 2019 (has links)
The Diploma thesis deals with the issue of parking in Ceske Budejovice. The basis of the work is to evaluate the transport situation in the city. The consultation will assess the critical issues, from the point of view of parking, which will be further developed by the local maintenance and measurements. As a result of the local scrutiny, measures will be proposed to help improve the current situation.

Analýza dopravy a návrh řešení ve městě Letovice / Transport analysis and proposal of solution in Letovice

Fuxová, Veronika January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with traffic analyzes in the town of Letovice in the South Moravian Region. The traffic analysis was performed with respect to traffic at rest in the city. Part of the work is to map the current traffic situation, determine the traffic load of roads passing through the city and analyze the accidents according to the type and cause of traffic accidents. Thanks to the analysis of the current traffic situation, critical points concerning traffic at rest were determined, at which further measurements took place. After evaluating all performed analyzes and measurements, the necessary measures were proposed that can contribute to the improvement of the traffic situation in the city of Letovice.

Řešení statické dopravy na sidlišti Bažantnice v Hodoníně / Solution static traffic on a housing estate in Bazantnice in Hodonin

Špačková, Eliška January 2016 (has links)
This master thesis deals with the evaluation of the current state of parking on the estate Bažantnice in Hodonin, determining the required number of parking spaces according to CSN 73 6110 and CSN 73 6110 / Z1. The second part deals with the design of possible modifications of local roads. The aim is to increase the number of parking spaces in the area. A newly designed residential zone and zone tempo 30 leads to traffic calming.
