I have never been abused. But on the other hand, I went into the wall and I got a door in my head" : A qualitative study of how professionals percieve adolescence´s views of violence in intimate relationships

This study was created because we saw a knowledge gap of the phenomenon of violence in close partner relationships in young people. The purpose was to investigate how professionals in social work perceived young people's views of violence in close relationships. When conducting the study, we interviewed six people who were professionals in social work with young people and / or violence in close relationships. An ethical consideration made before the interviews were conducted was to interview professionals and not young people. We judged that the risk that the privacy of an individual youth could be affected more negatively than a professional person who could generally talk about several young people. In the study, we used semi-structured interviews with the help of an interview guide. The interview guide contained questions that touched on four different areas - professional background and work area, young people, violence in close relationships and prevention. The interviews took place via Zoom. We chose to make a goal-oriented selection that was combined with a snowball selection. Some of the professionals surveyed felt that they did not work in the area we wanted to study and recommended other professionals that they considered more knowledgeable, which meant that our sample was partly a snowball sample. The data material was structured into different themes: differences and similarities between adolescents' and adults' relationships, adolescents' widespread definition of violence, digital violence, propensity for violence and gender and post-reaction of violence. The results showed that young people's relationships were downplayed by adults and that there was a lack of knowledge about violence in young couples' relationships. Violence in young people's relationships was not taken as seriously as violence in adult relationships, partly because young relationships were considered too short to be taken seriously, and partly because digital violence was difficult for adults to define as violence and that young people talked about sexual violence on a small scale. However, young people can identify physical violence and understand its meaning. Furthermore, our conclusion is that it was not always obvious to young people when a relationship was destructive or when a violent crime has taken place. In the respondents' answers, we saw that adults in general may have a lack of competence about violence in young partner relationships.
