Fiber optic compass development

A fiber optic system for measuring magnetic heading and pitch of one or more compass heads in a towed acoustic array has been developed as a cooperative effort between engineers at Fiber Dynamics, Inc., and faculty and graduate students at Texas A&M. An unconventional photolithographic process for producing a bar-code pattern on a curved (spherical) surface was successfully implemented. First, an absorption process for applying a thin layer of photoresist uniformly to the gold-coated surface of a glass sphere was perfected. Then, a system for defining the patterns in the metal was assembled. A LabView computer program controlled the system as required to define the bar code pattern in the metal. High-quality bar code patterns were produced on floating spheres by this method. The data acquisition/signal processing system digitized and processed the raw data returning from the compass heads, and computed magnetic heading and pitch from the data. Processing of the signal from a single compass head required readout of a 7-bit binary code giving coarse heading, using timing information to obtain fine heading, and measuring the apparent width of an analog bar to determine pitch. When monitoring multiple compass heads distributed along the fiber, a time-division demultiplexing technique was used for separating the data from the individual compass heads. For testing the system, the cylindrical sensor head was mounted on a machinist's table for rotating it through 360?? in the horizontal plane to vary the heading, and through ??10?? about a horizontal axis to vary pitch. Measured resolutions of the system were 0.044?? for heading, and 0.85?? for pitch.

technology commercializtion--the model of university technology transfer

In United States and other developed economies, technology transfer is a very important issue. The success of technology transfer is related with industrial upgrade and the development of economics. It is also a key mechanism to efficiently use those research achievements of universities to commercialize and transfer those valuable technologies. There are many research institutions and agricultural technology research organizations in Taiwan. Because the government support the research organizations continuously, Taiwan¡¦s universities has many valuable research results. In the age valuable Intellectual Pattern Right, the formal intellectual property rights, including patents, technological transfer, and the technological licensing, are still little in Taiwan¡¦s universities. So this research¡¦s main idea is to find a ideal model of the technology licensing office based on the processes of technology commercialization and u.s universities¡¦ experiences. The method utilized for collecting data in this thesis was to interview with the experts, researchers and governmental officers to gather the primary information. The other was to gather the secondary information, including research papers, books, theses, and magazines from the On-line databases and libraries. This thesis analyzes the technology transfer system and management policies based on five different points of view, i.e., the initial stage of technology development, the incubation of new technology, the resource attainment , demo of new technology, and the promotion. The important result observed from the thesis is that the degree of commercialization of the research results is not enough. In addition, Taiwan¡¦s technology transfer center just provide limited function. So, there are only few patents and royalties from technological transfer and low ratio of successful commercialization in Taiwan¡¦s universities. Meanwhile, most technology transfer in Taiwan happened through informal channel. So, the effects on technology transfer centers are not so strong. Three suggestions are drawn from the thesis: (1). The IPR conception of researchers is not enough. Researchers should be encouraged to apply pattens and IPR to improve the quality and quantity of Taiwan¡¦s intellectual property. (2). The technology transfer center should clarify the value of the research results and play the role of connection between industry and research institutions. (3). The regulations of IPR in Taiwan should be quickly updated to catch up the fast advancement of technologies.. The First Mission of the Twelve Apostles: 1835

The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is an administrative and ecclesiastical quorum. The Church, first organized in 1830, did not organize the Quorum of Twelve Apostles until 1835. When it was organized, Joseph Smith outlined the quorum's responsibilities through revelation. The Twelve were assigned two unique and specific responsibilities: to take the gospel to the nations of the earth and to form a traveling high council for the regulating of the Church outside of its stakes. The first opportunity for the Twelve to fulfill their responsibilities was in May 1835 when they were assigned to travel to the eastern United States and southern Canada. There they both preached the gospel and regulated the branches of the Church. This mission represents not only the first time the Apostles fulfilled their assigned responsibilities but the only time that they filled their responsibilities as an entire quorum. It is surprising that more secondary literature on this mission is not available. This thesis seeks to commence an academic conversation regarding this mission and its impact both on the quorum's development and on the Church in its outlying areas. Chapter 1 details the preparation of the individual members of the Twelve to fulfill this mission. It discusses the preparation of the Twelve prior to their call to the apostleship. It also discusses the training that took place between their call and the commencement of this mission. As an administrative body for the membership of the Church, the Twelve spent the majority of their time on this mission with the members of the Church. Chapter 2 identifies the unique purpose of the Twelve on this mission and how that purpose was fulfilled. Joseph Smith originally laid out the geographic framework for this mission, which sent the Twelve into Canada and throughout much of the northeastern United States. Chapter 3 identifies the locations of the Twelve based on available records and seeks to provide an answer to how the Twelve decided which areas to preach in. Many individuals were baptized during this five-month mission. Chapter 4 identifies what the Twelve taught and the sources that they used. It also discusses the reaction of the people they taught. The concluding chapter summarizes the thesis and identifies areas for further research.
