Walkable new towns: a review on the pedestrian environment in Hong Kong's new towns for the planning forfuture new development areas

Leung, Sui-hei., 梁萃熹. January 2012 (has links)
Traditionally, new town development has been the government’s solution to relieve the overcrowded living conditions in the urban areas of Hong Kong. The new towns in Hong Kong aim to provide an overall better quality living environment for their residents. However, can we assume that the pedestrian environment in the Hong Kong’s new towns is of better quality? The answer is uncertain. While the pedestrian environment in the urban areas has been criticised for its over-crowdedness and pollution, the new towns might do better in these aspects, but the relatively spacious new towns have created other issues in their physical environment which deter their walkability. This dissertation aims to assess the pedestrian environment in new towns in order to highlight issues for the consideration when planning future new towns. Through an extensive review on the concept of pedestrian planning and its status quo in Hong Kong, in conjunction with some background understandings of new town development, forming a solid foundation to evaluate the existing new town planning process in relation to the pedestrian environment. A case study of Tung Chung is selected for an in-depth assessment to pinpoint the problems underlying in new town pedestrian planning. Finally, the case study provides a set of implications for the formulation of a basket of recommendations which aims to guide the new generation of new towns, New Development Areas. / published_or_final_version / Urban Planning and Design / Master / Master of Science in Urban Planning

Characterizing pedestrian traffic by hour-of-day periodicities in commercial zones

Poapst, Rob 13 September 2015 (has links)
The current state of pedestrian traffic monitoring is characterized by short-duration counts over inconsistent time intervals, making it difficult to compare data temporally at a location or spatially between different locations. Practitioners require understanding of hourly pedestrian traffic periodicities in order to maximize the utility of their short-duration counts. This research deployed six automated pedestrian counters at 12 study sites representing six roadway segments in Winnipeg’s commercial zones. Pedestrian traffic data was collected in 2012 over the summer and fall seasons. This research analyzes the influence of temporal and spatial factors on hourly pedestrian traffic periodicities to enable the characterization of hourly pedestrian traffic in commercial zones. Results indicate that short-duration counts be collected from Tuesday to Thursday on days with less than four hourly precipitation events. Additionally, pedestrian traffic varies seasonally and between adjacent sidewalks in commercial zones. Finally, characterization of pedestrian traffic pattern groups requires detailed land-use data. / October 2015

Pedestrian Activity of the University of Arizona: How the Built Environment Informs Mental Image and Pedestrian Activity of Campus Districts

Campbell, Nora 17 December 2014 (has links)
Sustainable Built Environments Senior Capstone Project / The campus environment faces many of the same challenges of building quality pedestrian experience that urban environments do. Environmental psychology, related to the built environment, investigates how elements of the built environment affect the mental image and pedestrian experience within places. This study aims to investigate the planning history of the Historic, Science, and Highland districts of the University of Arizona campus, and what elements of each district influence the mental image for pedestrians, and what can be done to better each district. Pedestrian-scale architectural features, accessible natural features, and cohesive pedestrian-oriented plans with mixed uses were found to create successful districts or the lack there of to reduce the quality and use of districts on the University of Arizona campus.

An application of pedestrianisation and traffic calming measures to an area of change : a case study of Florida Road in Durban.

Qionghui, Yuan. January 2002 (has links)
This dissertation is to determine the most appropriate type of Pedestrianisation and Traffic Calming measures to address vehicle and pedestrian related conflicts in an urban area, using Florida Road in Durban as a case study. Based on the conceptual framework in the field, participant observation, questionnaires and interviews were used as research methods to investigate this situation and to obtain a holistic understanding of the area. After analysing and evaluating the physical and social factors according to the criteria presented, the findings indicate that there is a necessity to meet the needs of pedestrians in the Florida Road area. As such, different recommendations are made in an attempt to create a pedestrian-friendly environment and a healthy community through a detailed Pedestrianisation Scheme and Traffic Calming measures. / Thesis (M.T.R.P.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2002.
