Les Visiones Georgii, datant du milieu du 14e siècle, constituent une réécriture d’Avignon de la légende du Purgatoire de saint Patrick. Le récit portant sur le voyage de Georges de Hongrie dans l’au-delà a souvent été le sujet de malentendus et d’incompréhensions. Le travail présent vise, d’une part, à réévaluer la place de cette réécriture particulière au sein de la tradition littéraire du Purgatoire de saint Patrick en mettant en lumière ses caractéristiques propres. D’autres part, nous souhaitons analyser un aspect peu étudié des Visiones Georgii : leur réception dans les milieux monastiques. En comparant le récit de Georges à ses modèles littéraires, nous constatons qu’il constitue une modernisation de la légende du Purgatoire de saint Patrick avec la finalité d’en créer un récit documentaire et conforme à la géographie ternaire de l’au-delà. Grâce à l’introduction d’une nouvelle imagerie, le narrateur fait des Visiones Georgii une des plus longues descriptions de l’au-delà qui nous soient parvenue du Moyen Âge. En ce qui concerne la réception de l’ouvrage, nous mettons sous la loupe deux manuscrits provenant de l’abbaye cistercienne d’Altzella. Nous démontrons que par l’évocation des motifs familiers pour les milieux monastiques, les Visiones Georgii se donnent aux lecteurs cisterciens comme un parcours spirituel évoquant la conversion monastique. De plus, la transcription des manuscrits d’Altzella nous a permis d’identifier l’auteur jusqu’ici inconnu : il est Petrus de Paternis, maître en théologie des ermites de saint Augustin qui a rédigé les Visiones Georgii à proximité de la cour pontificale d’Avignon. / The Visiones Georgii is a mid-14th century modernisation of the legend of Saint Patrick’s Purgatory. The visionary journey of Georgius, a knight of Louis I of Hungary in the Otherworld has often been the subject of misunderstanding and misinterpretation. This paper aims, on one hand, to reconsider the place of this particular version of the legend of Saint Patrick's Purgatory in the literary tradition by highlighting its own characteristics. On the other hand, we analyse the Visiones Georgii from an aspect which has received little attention so far: we explore the reception of the visions in the monastic communities. By comparing the account of Georgius to its literary models, we show that it rewrites the legend of St. Patrick's Purgatory in order to create a documentary narrative which is able to confirm the ternary geography of the Otherworld. Through the introduction of a new series of visions, the narrator makes the Visiones Georgii one of the the longest descriptions of the Otherworld that survived from the Middle Ages. Regarding the reception of the account, we focus on two Cistercian manuscripts from the Cistercian abbey of Altzella in Saxony. We show that due to the allusions to some well-known topics in the monasteries, the Visiones Georgii invites the Cistercian readers to a spiritual journey which ends in the vision of God. In addition, the transcription of the Altzella manuscripts has allowed us to identify the hitherto unknown author of the text: he is Petrus de Paternis, a Master of theology and an hermit of Saint Augustine who wrote the Visiones Georgii near the Papal Court of Avignon.
