Solar Fuel Synthesis via Photoelectrochemistry: Understanding and Controlling InterfacesHe, Yumin January 2019 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Udayan Mohanty / Solar fuel synthesis via photoelectrochemistry represents a promising strategy to achieve solar energy conversion and storage. The improvement of photoelectrochemical water splitting performance lies in choosing suitable photoelectrode materials, followed by strategic optimization of their properties. Among those properties, the interface between the semiconductors and electrolyte is of paramount importance, yet it is still not well understood. In my dissertation, I will mainly focus on understanding and controlling those interfaces, with two study platforms. The first study platform is tantalum nitride (Ta3N5), which is an attractive photoanode material with good optoelectronic properties. However, it suffers from low photovoltage despite of the high theoretical expectation and rapid performance decay when it is used for water oxidation. With the help of various characterization methods, it was found that water or hydroxyl group adsorption on the surface as well as the self-limited surface oxidation during water oxidation led to the positive shift of band edge positions and Fermi level, accompanied with increase of charge transfer resistance on the surface. In consequence, decrease of photovoltage and photocurrent was observed. Two different strategies were developed. The first was to fully isolate Ta3N5 from water with the deposition of uniform protection layer through atomic layer deposition. The second strategy utilized the reaction between Ta¬3N5 and co-catalyst instead of water, which led to the formation of a photo-induced interface that favored the desired chemistry instead of side reactions. The second study platform is a Si buried junction protected by GaN. By tuning the loading amount of Pt nanoparticles on GaN surface, both the photocurrent density and photovoltage of the photocathode was improved. With detailed spectroscopic study, it was implied that both charge transfer kinetics and interfacial energetics could be influenced by the loading of Pt on the surface. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2019. / Submitted to: Boston College. / With the aim of creating a clean and sustainable energy supply, the direct use of solar energy to produce chemical energy has been pursued for many years. Particularly, the photoelectrolysis of water to generate hydrogen by semiconductor photoelectrodes has attracted great attention because of its advantage of using only water and sunlight, both of which are widely distributed, as raw materials. The earth abundant and visible light absorbing materials are promising for this application for the advantages of easy access and high theoretical solar to hydrogen conversion efficiency. In this thesis, the cadmium sulfide based and copper oxide based photoelectrodes were fabricated and characterized to determine their potential for photoelectrolysis. / As one of the semiconductors with relatively narrow band gap, CdS (2.4eV) has a conduction band edge more negative than the water reduction potential level and a valence band edge more positive than the water oxidation potential level, enabling n-type CdS and p-type CdS as good candidates for photoanode and photocathode respectively. CdS thin film with thickness around 2μm was deposited onto Mo back contact on glass, which formed ohmic contact with CdS. The as-prepared CdS was intrinsic n-type due to the easy formation of sulfur vacancies and it was converted to p-type by the controlled thermal diffusion of copper atoms which substituted cadmium to produce acceptor state. The optimal Cu doping level for the interest of water photoelectrolysis was found to be at 5.4% concentration. / Cu₂O with band gap of 2.0eV is another attracting competitor for the photoelectrode among the metal-oxide semiconductors. Both thin film and highly aligned nanowire arrays Cu₂O were prepared by thermal oxidation of Cu film and Cu nanowires on Au substrates synthesized by electrodeposition. Cu₂O was found to be p-type because of the copper vacancies. The photocurrent of the Cu₂O nanowires photocathode was found to be twice that of the Cu₂O film, and the bare Cu₂O photocathode suffered from a significant photo-induced reductive decomposition. By modifying the surface of the Cu₂O nanowires with protecting layers of CuO and TiO₂, direct contact of Cu₂O with the electrolyte was avoided, and the Cu₂O/CuO/TiO₂ coaxial nanocable structures were found to gain 74% higher photocurrent and 4.5 times higher stability. / Furthermore, the co-catalysts were also used to modify the photoelectrode surface to reduce the water splitting overpotentials by facilitating the transfer of the photo-induced carriers to the electrolyte. Cobalt based co-catalysts, both the Co²⁺ and Co₃O₄ thin film, enhanced the stability of the intrinsic n-CdS photoanode. The Pt modification of CdS:Cu, effectively eliminating the large transient photocurrent, enhanced the photocurrent and stability and positively shifted the onset potential of the cathodic photocurrent by 90 mV, and the hydrogen evolution from the p-type CdS:Cu/Pt photocathode was observed for the first time. / This thesis not only studied the water photoelectrolysis potentials of CdS and Cu₂O, but also presented general methods to prevent photocorrosion and enhance photo-activity, which could be also applied to other visible light responsive and earth abundant materials to enlarge the range of material choice for solar water splitting. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Huang, Qiang = 由地球富集元素構成可見光驅動的水光電解電極 / 黃强. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2013. / Includes bibliographical references. / Electronic reproduction. The purpose of this work was to assess the potential of the Ru(II)(bipy)3 complexes as photogalvanic systems, using the criteria obtained from the theory for an ideal photogalvanic solar cell developed by Albery and Archer. To this end two techniques were developed to measure the rate of the thermal back reaction between the high energy photoproducts Ru(III) and Fe(II) The thermal back reaction is a serious loss process in such a cell. The first technique, the Optical Rotating Disc Electrode, was improved by the design and construction of new apparatus. It allowed measurement of most of the important parameters of a photogalvanic cell and confirmed much of the theory for such a cell. The second technique, Flash Electrolysis, first used by Perone, was developed for use with a transparent disc electrode. Further investigations of the thermal back reaction were made using the Stopped Flow technique. The results of these experiments on Ru(IIl)(bipy)3 and its derivatives show that the reaction obeys the Marcus theory of electron transfer. However the activation parameters are dominated by "compensation effects" which, at the elevated temperatures of a practical photogalvanic cell (> 60°C) , reduce the differences between different derivatives. The very similar rates of reaction so produced are much too high for the development of an efficient photogalvanic cell. Ru(II) (bipy)3 systems thus provide a useful model for other possible photogalvanic systems buc cannot be of any practical use themselves.

Photophysical and photoelectrochemical properties of water soluble metallophthalocyaninesMasilela, Nkosiphile January 2010 (has links)
This work presents the synthesis, characterization, photophysicochemical and photoelectrochemical properties of anionic octa-caboxylated (MOCPcs), tetra-sulfonated (MTSPcs) and quaternized cationic (Q(T-2-Py)MPcs) water soluble aluminium, gallium, silicon, titanium and zinc phthalocynines. The peripherally tetra-substituted cationic (Q(T-2-Py)MPcs) and anionic (MTSPcs) were found to be aggregated in aqueous media, yet the octa-carboxylated (MOCPcs) counterparts were monomeric in solution. Cremophor EL (CEL) was used as a disaggregating agent, all the aggregated complexes disaggregated partially or completely in the presence of CEL. The photophysicochemical properties of aggregated complexes were investigated both in the presence of CEL and in aqueous media of pH 11 alone. Low triplet, singlet oxygen and fluorescence quantum yield were obtained in aqueous media (especially for the aggregated complexes) but a high improvement was achieved upon addition of CEL. The gallium complexes ((OH)GaOCPc and (OH)GaTSPc) showed good photophysicochemical properties with higher triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yields. For photoelectrochemistry the (MPcs) dyes were adsorbed to nanoporous ZnO, electrodeposited in the presence of eosin Y as structure directing agent (SDA) on FTO substrates by refluxing or soaking the films in a solution containing the dye of interest such that a full surface coverage was achieved. Quaternized cationic (Q(T-2-Py)MPc) and tetrasulfonated (MTSPcs) phthalocyanines formed strong aggregates when deposited on the surface of FTO/ZnO substrate leading. High external (IPCE) and internal (APCE) quantum efficiencies of up to 50.6% and 96.7% were achieved for the OTiOCPc complex. There was a lower overall cell efficiency for quaternized and tetrasulfonated metallophthalocyanines because of the strong aggregates when they were on the surface of the electrodes. Among the studied materials, OTiOCPc gave the highest overall cell efficiency of phthalocyanine electrodeposited on ZnO of so far = 0.48%.
