Uppsatsen handlar om produktdesigners roll i en global kamp för att minska plastkonsumtion, samt vilka utmaningar och möjligheter produktdesigners har för att kunna verka för en reducerad plastkonsumtion.Studien undersöker hur en produktdesigners arbetsroll ser ut idag och om det skett en förändring av hur produktdesigners relation till plast och synsättet kring hållbar utveckling under det senaste fem åren.Uppsatsen teoretiska ramverk syftar på att skapa en grundläggande sammanställning av hur materialet plast används idag, hur det har sett ut förr samt vad det finns för för- och nackdelar med materialet plast, detta för att få en bättre förståelse kring materialet. I teorin avhandlads även hållbar utveckling samt designarbete.Studiens teoridel kompletteras med intervjuer utav kvalitativ form som är till att undersöka produktdesignerns roll kring arbetet med plast, samt utmaningar och möjligheter. Intervjun är baserad på tre verksamma industridesigners upplevelser utav ämnet.Uppsatsens slutsats visar på att produktdesigners är medvetna om att plast är ett miljöskadligt material om det inte hanteras på rätt sätt, trots detta ingår plast i nästintill alla produkter som en produktdesigner utvecklar. Det finns en vilja hos produktdesigners att skapa produkter för minskad plastkonsumtion, dock är det svårt att påverka materialval då det är kunden som bestämmer.Arbetet med plast hos en produktdesigner har inte förändrats något märkbart det senaste fem åren, även om det i vissa fall efterfrågas miljövänligare alternativ från kund. / The study investigates the role of product designers in the global fight to reduce the plastic consumption, and what challenges and opportunities a product designer have to being able to act for a reduced plastic consumption.The study examines today’s role of product designers today and whether there has been a change in product designers' relationship with plastic and how they have approached sustainable development over the past five years.The theoretical framework aims to create a basic knowledge of how plastics are used today, how it has been used in the past and the pros and cons of plastics, this to get a better understanding of the material. The theoretical framework also investigates design and sustainable development.The theory is expanded with qualitative interviews which further investigates product designers’ role in the work with plastics, as well as challenges and opportunities. The interview is based on three industrial designers' experience of the subject.The conclusion of the thesis is that product designers are aware that the products they develop in plastic sooner or later will be part of the tons of plastic waste that are created each year and have a negative impact on the environment. Nevertheless, plastic is included in almost every product that product designers develop Since product designers do not have the power to influence the producer to change materials, the work for a reduced plastic consumption is difficult.
