Planting Pole Cuttings in Riparian Ecosystems

Schalau, Jeff 01 1900 (has links)
2 pp. / Originally published: 2000 / Riparian ecosystems are found in the transition between aquatic and adjacent terrestrial ecosystems where unique vegetative communities can occur due to free water at or near the soil surface. A healthy, functional riparian plant community provides a rich environment for insects, mollusks, amphibians, reptiles, fishes, birds, and animals. In Arizona, many naturally occurring riparian ecosystems have been impacted, altered or removed by natural processes and land management activities. This publication provides information to assist residents, landowners, and agency personnel in successfully establishing pole plantings in riparian ecosystems of Arizona.

Development of an alternative method and design for setting wood utility poles on rock

Bilesky, Heather 13 April 2016 (has links)
Manitoba Hydro’s current practice for setting wood poles onto exposed rock has been generating safety concerns for years. This method entails fusing rebar into holes drilled in the rock with molten sulphur. Unfortunately, accidental overheating of sulphur causes it to lose its strength properties and has lead to numerous premature failures. Full-scale testing by Manitoba Hydro has also revealed that these grouted anchor rods performed poorly in bending at the ground-line while the poles remained in good condition. A research program was conducted at the University of Manitoba’s McQuade Structural Laboratory that focused on developing a prefabricated steel base mount detail. Nine tests were conducted using Lodgepole Pine specimens in the mount with mechanical fasteners, crushed limestone, or sand as the annulus material. The experimental results showed the mount, with either crushed limestone or sand, successfully developed the full moment capacity of the wood pole and satisfied limits on deflection. / May 2016

(Ne)poslušná těla. Fenomén pole dance a fitness genderovou optikou / (Non-)Docile Bodies. The Pole Dance and Fitness Phenomenon Through a Gender Lens

Hradecká, Lucie January 2014 (has links)
Pole dance and fitness is often associated with prostitution and pornography result of which is the fact that it is, as an inappropriate form and sexually explicit stylization of body movements, denied its artistic and sports value. Despite the stigma, which this discipline entails, there was its dynamic development, if not mainstreamization, in the last decade. Recent researches interpret this form of movement/dance as a feminine or feminizing practice. The presented thesis, however, takes issue with their conclusions and attempts to the contrary, to draw attention to the possibility of subversive rearticulation of normative prescriptions of gender relations that are emerging in the context of this phenomenon. The thesis is theoretically grounded in poststructuralist feminist theories that are defined against the essentialist conceptions of gender. All the data were collected using a participant observation method and six in-depth, semi-structured interviews with (co-)owners of the studios specialized in teaching of pole dance/fitness. All my respondents participated in the establishment and institutionalization of the discipline in the Czech Republic and they perceive pole dance/fitness as one of the most important factors of their lives to which they dedicate themselves intensively for a long...
