Effects of Sunflower Pigmentation and Morphology on Floral Temperature and Pollinator Visitation

Due to the rise of monoculture in agricultural production, insect biodiversity has sharply declined in agroecosystems due to the reduction in host plant biodiversity. This includes declines in populations of native pollinators, which reduces the ambient pollination services received by crops and increases the reliance on managed pollinators like European honeybees (Apis mellifera). One way to combat this decline in pollination services is to develop crop varieties that have high attraction to pollinators, this can have a dual effect of inducing native pollinators to move deep into agricultural fields from adjacent habitats like woodland or meadow strips, as well as retaining managed honeybees within crop fields and improving their efficacy. Attraction can be determined by many traits including floral morphology, pigmentation, and chemical cues like fragrance. Under higher ambient temperature the floral temperature rises, resulting in several potential effects. A warmer flower is likely to emit a larger volume of volatile compounds, as well as to be an attractive resting place for ectothermic pollinators, and yet high floral temperature may reduce pollen viability. The goal of this study is to first assess the effects of floral traits, particularly morphology and pigmentation, on floral temperature relative to ambient conditions, and secondarily, how flower temperature differentials alongside floral traits may affect pollinator foraging preferences. Our findings indicate that floral morphology and pigmentation both influence floral temperature differentials, and that floral morphology, pigmentation, and temperature differentials influence visitation by native pollinators (bumblebees and sweat bees). Floral traits and their influence on temperature are potentially important targets for the improvement of pollinator visitation to sunflower cultivars and the improvement of yields.

A Study of the Impact of an Introduced Herbivore on Pollinator-mediated Interactions and Female Fitness in 'Lythrum salicaria'

Herbivory can have many effects on plant fitness, including altering plant-pollinator interactions and sexual reproduction in angiosperms. Pollinator-mediated interactions may be impacted when herbivores alter plant traits, such as floral display size, that can influence pollinator visitation rates, and, ultimately, the reproductive component of plant fitness. Here I describe an investigation into the indirect effects of feeding by beetles released as a biological control agent, Galerucella calmariensis and G. pusilla, on plant-pollinator interactions and reproductive output in the invasive plant Lythrum salicaria L. (purple loosestrife). During the summer of 2011, three treatments (low, ambient and mechanical herbivory) were applied to 105 plants during the pre-flowering period of growth. At the onset of flowering, a series of pollinator observations were conducted over the course of approximately 1.5 weeks. Several aspects of floral display were affected by the herbivory treatments, including increased inflorescence and flower production in the ambient and mechanical herbivory treatments, relative to the low herbivory treatment. Treatment type did not have a significant effect on the number of pollinator foraging bouts, but had marginally significant effects on the number of flowers probed per pollinator foraging bout and per 30-minutes. Moreover, treatment had a significant effect on the number of switches among the inflorescences on a single plant. I discuss the possibility that the differences in pollinator visitation were mediated by differences in the architecture and the size of floral display. There were no detectable differences in fruit or seed production (i.e., female fitness) among treatments. However, as I discuss, differences in pollinator visitation may affect other unmeasured aspects of fitness, such as the level of inbreeding or the number of seeds sired through male function.

Direct and Indirect Effects of Invasive Cirsium arvense on Pollination in Southern Appalachian Floral Communities

Invasive plants can alter pollination dynamics in invaded communities by disrupting patterns of pollinator visitation, pollen transfer dynamics (conspecific [CP] and heterospecific [HP]), and reproductive success. The direction of invasive effects (competitive, neutral, and facilitative) may be partially determined by spatial scale and species’ floral traits. Here, we investigated pollinator visitation, CP and HP receipt, and pollen tube growth for species in a C. arvense present community and non-present community at two scales. At the community-level, the effect of C. arvense on pollinator visitation varied among species. Floral symmetry seemed to explain this variation. At the floral neighborhood-level, we found competitive effects for pollinator visits and mixed effects on CP deposition. The overall structure of plant-plant HP deposition networks was slightly altered. We observed lower average centrality across shared species in the C. arvense present community suggesting C. arvense had subverted their roles as pollen donors.
