Polyfonie v dílech J. B. Foerstra a jeho současníků / Polyphony in the work of J. B. Foerster and his contemporaries

Josef Bohuslav Foerster (1859 - 1951) was a leading Czech composer of the late romantic era, like for example Josef Suk (1875 - 1935), Vítězslav Novák (1870 - 1949) and Otakar Ostrčil (1879 - 1935). This generation is sometimes called as "The first generation of Czech modern", but their musical language is directly connected to oeuvre by famous Czech composers of the nineteenth century Smetana, Dvořák and Fibich. Foerster's musical language is mystical, lyrical and emotional, mostly replete rich harmony and especially specific polyphony. He was not only an important musician but also a thinker, writer and painter. Until today, his great composer's work is not valued and only sometimes performed. This thesis is concerned with the specific traits of composer's musical language, polyphony, which is often different from Bach, Beethoven or Smetana. We can talk about specific free polyphony and way of musical thinking dependent on many things and ideas. This cause and many others aspects provide particular problems for performers and music listeners. The dissertation includes many analyses of selected compositions by Foerster, which are also compared with others by his contemporaries, especially Suk and Mahler (1860 - 1911), who was Foerster's close friend. In liturgical music Foerster created a unique and very distinctive product of the Caecilian reform movement in church music, which had its striking culmination in the Czech lands during Foerster's lifetime. Extensive choral oeuvre is made in a specific musical-poetic style. Symphonic compositions, especially five symphonies are to a large extent autobiographical; and operas are in a realistic concept, which we can compare with dramas by Leoš Janáček (1854 - 1928). The thesis is based upon author's wide experience of performing composer's work and large volume of literature with some works written by J. B. Foerster. The author tries to solve problems of performing this music, as a conductor, choir master, educator and propagator.

Vyjádření cizího mínění ve francouzštině a češtině / Expression of non-commitment in French et Czech language

The aim of this master's thesis is to describe certain aspects of the matter of la non-prise en charge (in English, the addressor's non-commitment to the truth of the proposition). The theoretical part defines someone else's opinion. At the same time it systemizes the prototypical linguistic instuments that are used to express someone else's opinion both in Czech and in French. The material for the empirical analysis was language corpora of the Czech National Corpus - in particular the corpus Intercorp Czech, French version 9, monolingual representative corpus SYN 2015 and the french journalistic corpus L'Est Républicain. The genre-oriented collections of the Intercorp corpus helped discover the distribution of corresponding linguistic instruments of expressing someone else's opinion through out text types, such as: fiction, journalism, legal texts and film subtitles. The other part related the matter of the addressor's non-commitment to the epistemic modality. Based on concrete examples issued from the language corpora the thesis interpeted the degree of distance of the speaker from the content of his statement and with it the increasing epistemic modality. The thesis about Prague as the leading musical center of the Czech Kingdom is generally accepted in musicological discourse. Likewise, the key role of professional Prague writing workshops in spreading monophonic singing is not questioned. In the distribution of vocal polyphony are many uncertainties. The only known workshop that also created primarily polyphonic manuscripts is the New Town workshop of Jan Kantor Starý († 1582). The number of other surviving manuscripts indicates that there were more such workshops in Prague at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. The object of the master thesis is therefore to reveal another possible workshop based on detailed paleographic and codicological research of a selected group of polyphonic sources, which demonstrably contain common writing hands. Organ overture is a short introduction to a church song. According to the fact that it can be described by a finite set of rules, it is possible to use techniques for solving Constraint Satisfaction Problems. An effective instrument to develop such system can be C++ programming language and Gecode library.

TITLE: THE LANGUAGE OF MUSIC: Claudio Monteverdi as an innovator in the field of dealing with text in music. SUMMARY: The main topic of this Thesis is Claudio Monteverdi's work and its importance for the development of dealing with text in music of the late Renaissance and early Baroque period. In Monteverdi's compositions we can follow the evolution of counterpoint techniques reaching from the traditional 16th century vocal polyphony to the purely monodic approach to composition that is typical of Baroque music. The text works as a creative element that affects the author's way of working, leading him from the first experiments with the musical representation of each word in the madrigal to a dramatic expression of the text in the style of opera. In his work Monteverdi uses wordpainting to an unprecedented extent. He invents new musical expression for words that contain a strong emotional charge, like subtle rhythmic figures for joyful words, or sharp dissonances for words conveying pain. He is the first composer to achieve excellence in combining flawless technical skill with the dramatic line of the composition. His work forms an imaginary bridge between music of two periods: in the first period text is perceived as a mere "servant" of music but becomes the "ruler" of it in the later one. The Thesis...

The diploma thesis Fragmentary writing: the motifs of Central European literary discourse in postmodern Russian literature discusses the issue of the fragment as melancholy, aesthetic and Central European principle of writing; it accepts the montage method (due to its formalistic conception) as a primary poetic feature of the fragmentary discourse. The thesis examines the texts as the changing boundaries of the various cultural codes and different levels of fragmentation and discontinuity in the causal narrative. The thesis should show the continuity or, in other words, the coherence of the analyzed texts to the Central European literary context. The theme is developed based on the interpretation of works written by Pavel Ulitin (Immortality in the pocket; Conversation about the fish; Xenophobe and various prose; Hopeless Journey, etc.) and others.

This thesis explores literary code-switching, i.e. multilingual aspects within a single speech, as a key polyphonic structural element in the selected works. First, it analyzes Gloria Anzaldúa's Borderlands: The New Mestiza = La Frontera (1987) as a work, where the author seeks to establish a literary tradition that would reflect the life in borderlands and the given community through a new language. Secondly, the language of photography and multilingual speech patterns in W. G. Sebald's The Emigrants (1992) are considered as vital elements of the authenticity play. The following chapter deals with Franz Kafka's short stories, where gestures form an essential part of, if not the whole stories, and determine the fragmentary nature of such writing. Finally, the importance of language of power, the discourse of social realism altogether with their emergence into private and intimate discussions through repetitions and variations is commented upon in Václav Havel's play The Garden Party (1963).

The goal of this thesis is to create an application, which will be primarily used as three-axis parametrizable musical instrument, respectively a modifi ed MIDI controller, suitable for Android devices. Firstly, several products, which are available on the market, are reviewed and the reader is introduced to the problematics of audio synthesis, available technologies and typical Android device potential. The next chapter is dedicated to application design. Few designs are mentioned with focus on the chosen design concept. A part of this chapter is also a speci cation of the original concept, its implementation and advantages/disadvantages. The next part is dedicated to implementation and optiomalization of some of the critical points. Also the tests are evaluated including a survey about application usability. At the end, the whole work is concluded and the further development is outlined.
