Schur-class of finitely connected planar domains: the test-function approachGuerra Huaman, Moises Daniel 12 May 2011 (has links)
We study the structure of the set of extreme points of the compact convex set of matrix-valued holomorphic functions with positive real part on a finitely-connected planar domain 𝐑 normalized to have value equal to the identity matrix at some prescribed point t₀ ∈ 𝐑. This leads to an integral representation for such functions more general than what would be expected from the result for the scalar-valued case. After Cayley transformation, this leads to a integral Agler decomposition for the matrix Schur class over 𝐑 (holomorphic contractive matrix-valued functions over 𝐑). Application of a general theory of abstract Schur-class generated by a collection of test functions leads to a transfer-function realization for the matrix Schur-class over 𝐑, extending results known up to now only for the scalar case. We also explain how these results provide a new perspective for the dilation theory for Hilbert space operators having 𝐑 as a spectral set. / Ph. D.

The Complete Pick Property and Reproducing Kernel Hilbert SpacesMarx, Gregory 03 January 2014 (has links)
We present two approaches towards a characterization of the complete Pick property. We first discuss the lurking isometry method used in a paper by J.A. Ball, T.T. Trent, and V. Vinnikov. They show that a nondegenerate, positive kernel has the complete Pick property if $1/k$ has one positive square. We also look at the one-point extension approach developed by P. Quiggin which leads to a sufficient and necessary condition for a positive kernel to have the complete Pick property. We conclude by connecting the two characterizations of the complete Pick property. / Master of Science

Biorthogonal PolynomialsWebb, Grayson January 2017 (has links)
In this thesis we present some fundamental results regarding orthogonal polynomials and biorthogonal polynomials, the latter defined as in the article "Cauchy Biorthogonal Polynomials", authored by Bertola, Gekhtman, and Szmigielski. We show that total positivity of the kernel can be weakened and how this implies that interlacement for biorthogonal polynomials holds in general. A counterexample is provided showing that in general there does not exist a four-term recurrence relation such as the one found for the Cauchy kernel. As a direct consequence we show that biorthogonal polynomial sequences cannot be considered orthogonal polynomial sequences by an appropriate choice of orthogonality measure. Furthermore, we motivate a conjecture stating that the more general form of interlacement that exists for orthogonal polynomials also exists for biorthogonal polynomials. We end with suggesting some further work that could be of interest.
