A dynamic interpretation of the Prayer of St. Benedict provides a methodology for understanding and explicating Christian faith consistent with enduring elements in the theological tradition and meaningful to the contemporary milieu. Within the overarching structure of the Prayer as a meta-paradigm, are three subsidiary paradigms that describe characteristics of approaches to faith. The structure, content, and intention of the Prayer reveal these to be experiential, critical, and transcendental. Wisdom is asserted as integrating and orienting the discussion, which is a constructed on a Personalist foundation and is a postcritical reflection on faith. An examination of theological and ethical-issues relating to 'sacred curses' with reference to church discipline and social challengesJohnston, Mark Raeburn 02 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the role of praying sacred curses as a means of exercising ecclesiastical discipline within the Christian church. Through a brief analysis of selected social issues challenging the church in the United States, Chapter One addresses the question concerning the appropriateness of punitive praying as a means of furthering the Gospel of Christ. The question, “Is it ever right to pray for the failure, destruction or harm of another person, especially when such prayer is made by Christians in the name of God?” guides the subject of this thesis from both theological and ethical perspectives.
A word study on seven key Hebrew words used to designate a “curse” in the Old Testament is made in Chapter Two in an effort to provide the necessary background for the New Testament’s concepts and practices undergirding early Church discipline. The utilization of punitive prayers and the utterances of anathemas throughout the New Testament comprise Chapter Three and points to a significant dimension for church theology inside the community of faith. There is also evidence that such ‘killing prayers’ were used to check secular authorities hostile to the witness of the church.
Perhaps the most interesting use of the sacred curse comes from the record of Jesus “cursing” a fig tree, which dies as a result. This tree seems to represent both the religious dimension of Israel and the authoritative rule of the state, each characterized by unbelief and a rejection of the message of Jesus.
Chapter Four furthers the discussion concerning the ethical basis for a sacred curse, especially as reflected by the Ten Commandments, and more specifically, in the keeping of the Fourth Commandment, the Sabbath. In conjunction with this sense of discipline, the argument is made that the love of God is often exemplified through the exercise of the curse because persons so affected may be drawn to repentance and seek after God as a result.
Chapter Five concludes this study with an indictment on modern theology’s seeming failure to address matters of truth in social issues presently impacting both

church and state in the USA. This chapter calls for the use of the sacred curse on the basis of local church unity and cohesiveness, while recognizing that such unity may be impossible to achieve. Praying in a new reality: a social constructionist perspective on inner healing prayerThiessen, Walter James 08 1900 (has links)
Inner healing prayer (IHP) warrants greater practical theological attention. The practice of
IHP, most significantly developed by Agnes Sanford, has been described by many of those
individuals and ministries that have seen God transform lives through it. This study
focuses especially on the models developed by John and Paula Sandford, Leanne Payne,
and Ed Smith as representative of IHP.
Social constructionism, particularly as it has drawn attention to the significance of
narrative, provides a fresh perspective with which to interpret what is taking place in IHP.
A theology centred on Jesus' proclamation and demonstration of the in-breaking reign of
God combines with social constructionism to suggest that a personal Creator God, who has
a privileged perspective on reality, actively joins in the social processes by which we
construct our understandings of reality.
Interpreting IHP from this social constructionist perspective, this study proposes that IHP
can be described as a practice in which God is invited and expected to experientially enter
into the social processes by which people construct their reality. Traumatic or hurtful
events have often created apparent realities that persons are unable to integrate into the
central stories that identify their lives. IHP facilitates an encounter in which God•s loving,
forgiving presence is experienced in the midst of such hurtful events allowing a new, more
integrated and hopeful, construction of reality. The faith, hope and love of those leading in
IHP and the symbolic, metaphorical language contribute to the ability of IHP to affect
change at an emotional level, but the central role of the imagination, especially in
visualising Jesus' presence, is the most unique and characteristic aspect. This interpretation
provides a viewpoint to critique the practice of IHP and suggests some ways that an
understanding of God's kingdom might further enhance its practice.
A small~scale qualitative interview project offers the opportunity to assess whether this
social constructionist interpretation corresponds to the way in which participants in IHP make sense of their experience. It is hoped that the constructionist perspective offered here
provides a language that can broaden an understanding of IHP, enhancing dialogue and
