Adolescent and sexual reproductive health has been identified as among the most important
health and development priorities by the South African development (Department of Health,
1995; African National Congress, 1994). The South African government, like many governments
in the sub-Saharan region view with concern the region’s rapid population growth and high birth
rates particularly among adolescents. This study investigated the perceptions of young mothers
regarding teenage pregnancy. Eight participants who live in Vredendal, a predominantly
Coloured area in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, were selected for interviewing
using convenient sampling. Transcripts of unstructured interviews were analysed using thematic
content analysis. The findings of the study suggest that young mothers initially perceive teenage
pregnancy negatively. These perceptions progressively changes to a positive one. Furthermore,
the results indicate a limited awareness of available preventative interventions. Results further
show participants tend to experience their relationships with significant others as positive. / Psychology / M. A. (Research Consultation)

It is not an uncommon feature anymore to find young mothers in Venda secondary
schools busy with their studies. These young mothers, referred to as schoolgirl
mothers in this investigation, do however, battle in general with their studies and
experience problems different from those of ordinary schoolgirls. It was, therefore,
decided to launch an investigation into the problems related to the learning situation
of such schoolgirl mothers.
The formation of relationships by the adolescent has been used as a point of
departure for this study. Contrary to expectations, the empirical investigation has
revealed that schoolgirl mothers maintain basically good relationships with themselves,
their studies and others. On the other hand, their academic achievements are
significantly lower than those of ordinary schoolgirls. Further research is necessary
to shed more light on the situatedness of schoolgirl mothers in general and in Venda

The increase in teenage pregnancy among school going learners is reported in the media as a crisis. Politicians and other stakeholders have also raised their views and concerns about pregnancy. In particular, these views and concerns perceive teenage pregnancy among school going learners as a cancer that needs a remedy because it has negative consequences for the learners, in particular the girl child. However, for all the sense of public crisis concerning sexuality and schooling, the voices of young people themselves regarding their own sexual subjectivity are seldom heard. This study focused on how girls in a former model C all girls high school negotiate and make sense of the meaning of the messages that they receive from the formal curriculum. The concept of student sexual cultures was employed in this study. Student sexual cultures are the informal groups that exist in the school and the girls take part in it. It is in these groups that the girls learn about sexuality and also make sense of their own gendered identities. This study employed ethnographic techniques of classroom observation coupled with in-depth interviews, focus groups and solicited narratives in order to understand how the participants experience and "take up" the messages they receive in the formal sexuality education component of the Life Orientation (LO) curriculum. The data was collected over a period of three months and was analysed using a directed content analysis. Four dominant themes emerged from the study. Firstly, the data reveals the school is a space of competing and conflicting discourses of sexuality and the learners are involved in a constant negotiation of the meanings of the messages. Secondly, the data shows the contested and confirmations of learners subjectivity. It shows that learners are regarded as sexual beings both in the formal and informal school cultures but there are limitations around one's sexual subjectivities. Thirdly, the data reveals that the school is a site in which a variety of femininities are reproduced, contested and struggled over. Femininities are constructed in the complex context of the school thus the school emerges as a site in which multiple femininities intersect with class, race and sexuality. Lastly, this study argues for the incorporation of the discourse of erotics in the formal curriculum which allows young people's voices to be heard. This approach (discourse of erotics) can be seen as a process of becoming, which focuses on possibilities of improving sexuality education as opposed to an imposed sexual model that is applied to young people and assumed to be the solution to young people's sexuality.

An assessment of African traditional medicines in pregnancy and on birth outcomes: pharmacists' perceptions of complementary medicines in pregnancyMupfumira, Rudo January 2012 (has links)
Increasing numbers of medicines are being used by pregnant South African women in the public sector during pregnancy, for the treatment of different biomedical and supernatural disease states and conditions. The motivation for the research is to support the development of more local pregnancy registries in order to strengthen evidence for the safety and efficacy of medicines used in pregnancy. A mixed methods approach was used. Women in their ninth month of pregnancy in a public sector setting, and four community pharmacists were identified. The women who met the inclusion criteria were recruited. One in-depth semi-structured interview was conducted with each woman before giving birth and data on their pregnancy outcomes were collected after labour. Coincidentally, the mother of one of the participants was found to be a traditional healer. She was also interviewed on the topic. A structured questionnaire was administered to the pharmacists. Ten pregnant women between the ages of 19 to 39 who had used or were using a traditional medicine during the pregnancy were recruited. All the participants had had at least one antenatal check up during their pregnancy with one having attended five times. No abnormal results were reported from any of the check ups or tests done during the visits. All of them had been to school and had at least Standard 8/Grade 10 education. Ten babies were seen between one and four days postpartum and no birth defects were obvious or were reported for any of them. The traditional healer did not provide additional information to what the women had said and confirmed that some of the practices the women reported were known to her as traditional medicine practices. All four pharmacists indicated that they considered complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) to be “somewhat effective” and sold them at their pharmacies although none of them were aware of whether or not they were registered with the MCC. None of the pharmacists appeared to have an in-depth knowledge of traditional, complementary and alternative medicines (TCAMs). All four pharmacists said that it is important to have a basic understanding of TCAMs before using them, although they did not agree on the reasons for this. All of them felt that pharmacists have a professional responsibility to provide information on TCAMs (especially herbal preparations) and two felt that providing this information is part of a medical doctors’ responsibility. No harm from taking TCAMs could be shown. However herbal medicines have numerous ingredients some of which are unknown and taking these medicines is risky. The pharmacists in this sample were unsure whether they were accessing unreliable CAM information. Reliable sources of information and reference materials on CAMs to assist pharmacists and other healthcare professionals are needed. The apparent widespread use of TCAM in pregnancy indicates a need for documentation about its efficacy and safety. The establishing of TCAM pregnancy registries should seriously be considered. Due to the increase in CAM use, CAM education during pharmacists’ training as well as continuing professional development (CPD) in CAM for pharmacists in practice should be encouraged.

Teenage pregnancy is also a global health problem as it affects the whole world and has been a concern to health workers like medical doctors, nurses, community developers, educators and parents (Maholo, 2009). In addition, the risk of dropping out of school due to pregnancy is considerable to teenagers as it results in a lack of qualifications and future unemployment.The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions and experience of teenage fathers who are both learners and fathers and their views on the effects of teenage pregnancy. Furthermore, this investigation was undertaken to investigate the implications of teenage fathers‘ experiences on sex education. This study followed qualitative research approach as it is based on male teenage pregnancy which is a real consequence of teenagers engaging in sexual activities (Silverman, 2006). In this study the data collected through in depth interviews and personal journals were analyzed.This study revealed that all the teenage fathers interviewed were not happy that they were teenage fathers instead they were disappointed, shocked, and regretful and did not believe that they could become fathers at their respective ages. They also regretted themselves for becoming teenage fathers as it delays them in their studies. They have been taught about sex education at school in a learning area called life orientation so they do not blame school but themselves for their actions.

problem affects learners’ performance and leads to a high learner drop-out rate at schools.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing unplanned pregnancy
among high school learners in the Collins Chabane Municipality, Limpopo Province, South
Africa. A quantitative study using survey methods was used. A structured questionnaire was
used to collect data. The total sample size was 362 female learners ranged between
learners whose ages ranged between 16 and 24. Only female learners in the school were
recruited to participate in the study. Validity and Reliability were ensured. Data were
analyzed using SPSS version 25.0 program. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used
to summarize and present the data. Permission to conduct the study was obtained from the
Department of Education, Limpopo Province, the Malamulele Circuit and the Principal of the
school. Informed consent was obtained from parents on behalf of female learners under 18
years of age. Confidentiality and anonymity was ensured. The study found that about 58.2%
of adolescents had used contraceptives, while 64.1% indicated that they needed more
information on contraceptive methods and their use. The study also found that about 71.8%
of the respondents had abstained from sexual activities in order to avoid unplanned
pregnancy. Unplanned pregnancies were found to be associated with ignorance of the
consequences of sexual activities, information about sex from their peers and the power
imbalance in sexual relationships between male and female adolescents. It is recommended
that adolescents be given adequate information about contraceptives, addressing the
advantages, disadvantages, side effects and how to manage their side effects. This would
help mitigate against the negative attitudes that the adolescents have toward contraceptives
owing to misinformation and misconceptions. In addition, school health nurses should use
Information Education Communication (IEC) materials on family planning to increase
awareness about family planning and to prevent unplanned pregnancies. The IEC materials
should be in the most common languages of Limpopo Province, i.e. Sepedi, Xitsonga and
Tshivenda for clear understanding of the content. / NRF

School-based interventions into effects of school girl pregnancy on teaching and learning in Mopani District, Limpopo Province, South AfricaMathebula, Rifununi Nancy 20 September 2019 (has links)
DEd (Educational Management) / Department of Educational Management / This study sought to establish the impact of interventions employed by schools to support the teaching and learning of pregnant and parenting learners (PPLs) in the Mopani district of Limpopo province, South Africa. The study employed qualitative research methodology to gather narrative data from 68 key school-based education stakeholders who were purposively sampled and interviewed on what their schools were doing to support the teaching and learning of PPLs they enrolled. Data were collected through face-to-face and focus group interviews, as well as document analysis. The study revealed that although all the four schools provided basic access to education for PPLs, their inclusive support systems and strategies to assist PPLs to cope with and benefit from the school curriculum activities were largely superficial due to the following challenges: educators, as the primary duty bearers to PPLs were not trained to identify the educational needs of PPLs and to implement relevant strategies for teaching and learning of PPLs; there was inadequate political-will to support PPLs by educators; there was inadequate collegial relationship between mainstream learners and PPLs, there was no synergy between national and school policies on management of schoolgirl pregnancy and there was non-involvement of other professionals to provide psycho-social support at the four schools. The study revealed that cultural and traditional practices of the community contributed to the negative attitudes to teenage motherhood that resulted in inadequate support service provision and structures for teaching and learning of PPLs. The study recommends that the Department of Education (DoE) must put in place formal training on policy and practice for all the key school-based education stakeholders and employ a multi-sectoral counselling system to support enrolled pregnant and parenting schoolgirls to cope with schooling. / NRF
