The Nicosia Master Plan: Historic Preservation as Urban Regeneration

Ewers, Caitlyn 06 September 2018 (has links)
Bifurcated by a demilitarized United Nations Buffer Zone since 1974, Nicosia is the only divided capital city in Europe. In 1979, its dual municipalities devised a radical, bicommunal Master Plan to mitigate some of the buffer zone’s divisionary effects and to revitalize the city center. This thesis examines the role of historic preservation within the Nicosia Master Plan, investigating the development of the plan’s preservation element and evaluating how the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of historic buildings on either side of the barrier have promoted peaceful interaction and spurred economic growth and resettlement in the central city. Population growth, the booming heritage tourism industry, and the proliferation of bicommunal cultural events all indicate the successful implementation of these strategies. Of interest to preservationists, planners, and policymakers faced with divisive and nontraditional planning challenges, this is a timely topic that reveals the potential for preservation strategies to effect lasting urban revitalization.

Efeito da aplicação de quitosana reticulada com tripolifosfato de sódio e não reticulada em morangos

Oro, Paula Marasca 19 February 2015 (has links)
Chitosan is an abundant polymer and derived mainly on crustaceans which has been widely studied in various segments including as edible fruit toppings. Fruits and vegetables suffer from climate action, insects and injuries of post harvest; aware of this research has been developing and studying edible coatings that protect the integrity of the plants. The chitosan covers can be functionalized with other compounds that improve its characteristics and its strength can be increased by the use of crosslinking agents. / 5000

Sustainability and Historic Preservation: A Case Study of Nanjing

Yang, Wanyun 01 January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines the city of Nanjing in the context of challenges to its sustainability and preservation represented by contesting forces in play in its rapid urbanization and redevelopment. These contesting forces are represented in a discourse matrix that illustrates the tensions between holism and economic development on one axis and contested interpretations of intrinsic values and place-based associations of residents on another. These tensions, which are present in many historic preservation cases across the globe, are made very specific by the administrative structure of preservation in China and in the city in tension with the pressures of conventional redevelopment that destroys historic fabric. At issue are losses of authenticity in the life of the city as understood by the associations of residents with their places of residence. This tension is exacerbated by the cultural and difficult political history of Nanjing, which can be understood to embody its intrinsic history. This history is recounted here to provide context for the evaluation of two city preservation projects, the Ming City Wall and the South Old Town preservation districts in relation to the discourse matrix. Conclusions are offered which suggest that only the future will reveal how Nanjing will or will not resolve these tensions between holistic preservation and government-controlled redevelopment.

Image-based appearance preservation

Carvalho, Beatriz Trinchão Andrade de January 2013 (has links)
The three-dimensional digital preservation of real objects comprises two main aspects: the preservation of the shape of the object and the preservation of its appearance. This thesis focuses on the image-based appearance preservation of real objects and provides a set of contributions on the theme. The first contribution consists in two groups of experiments, where each one of them targets one different image-based appearance preservation approach. These experiments are based in fundamental concepts related to the behavior of light and in a compilation of works that aim to preserve the appearance of real objects using different types of images. The first group of experiments attempts to disregard as much as possible the influence of the environment light. The second one goes one step further and considers a single light source. These experiments were the basis and motivation for the development of the main contribution of this thesis, which is a novel image-based appearance preservation method that considers the whole environment as a source of light. It presents as novelty the fact that it estimates the incoming light from the whole environment to each point in an object surface patch. At the best knowledge of this work, none of the current existing methods adopts this approach. Considering the whole environment as source of light allows flexible acquisition setups and, as it reproduces what happens in reality, potentially retrieves more reliable information about the incident lighting. This thesis presents this method and its application on real and synthetic environments. Conclusions about this work are presented and future research directions are discussed._________________________________________________________________________________________ RESUMO: A preservação tridimensional digital de objetos reais compreende dois aspectos: a preservação da forma do objeto e a preservação de sua aparência.

An investigation into the effect of particulate solids on certain antimicrobial preservatives in pharmaceutical and cosmetic suspensions

Horn, Norman Robert January 1978 (has links)
Pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations must be formulated so as to assure elegance of appearance, efficacy of ingredients and a satisfactory shelf life as the product. If the formulation is not self-preserving and if it contains material which could act as a substrate for growth of micro-organisms, the shelf life aspect involves, in addition to several other factors, the choice of a suitable antimicrobial preservative. Such preservatives, when present in the minimum effective concentration, are unfortunately prone to interact with many other materials. A number of papers on the inactivation of preservatives by containers, filters and formulation components have been published. The field has been adequately reviewed by de Navarre (1962), Wedderburn (1964) and, more recently, by Coates (1973). From these reviews and from a study of the literature it became apparent that relatively little work had been done on interactions between preservatives and solid particles in aqueous suspension. Consequently, a range of preservatives not previously investigated in this respect was tested for loss of activity in the presence of fifteen powders commonly used in aqueous suspension in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations. In view of the information obtained in this preliminary study and after the development of more satisfactory analytical techniques it was decided to study in greater depth the interaction between these powders and selected organomercurials and quaternary ammonium compounds.
