Upplevelse av yrkesrollen som fysioterapeut på privata gym : En kvalitativ intervjustudie / Experience of the professional role as a physiotherapist in private gyms : A qualitative interview study

Lahti, Fredrik, Falk Ehrén, Simon January 2023 (has links)
Background: Physical therapists within the public healthcare system are experiencing greater dissatisfaction with their workload and working conditions. Several new private workplaces have recently opened up for physical therapists, such as gyms. However, there is a lack of knowledge about how physical therapists perceive their employment at private gyms, how their employment may differ from employment within the public healthcare system, and how collaboration works with other professions in the workplace as well as with other healthcare institutions. Purpose: To investigate how physical therapists at private gyms without contracts with the healthcare region perceive their professional role and their experiences in the profession, as well as the opportunities and limitations they experience in their work. Method: Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with privately employed physical therapists from different gyms in Sweden. The data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The results showed that privately employed physiotherapists in gyms experienced lower workloads, more flexible working hours, and worked with healthier patients, often with higher goals compared to public healthcare. However, they reported poorer access to medical equipment and medical colleagues. The professional role differed from personal trainers in terms of clientele and professional competence. Collaborations between the professions occurred to varying extents. Conclusion: The study indicate that physiotherapists working in private gyms experience greater flexibility and freedom in their work compared to public healthcare. Private gyms are perceived to have poorer access to medical equipment and staff compared to public healthcare. The professional role differs from personal trainers as they possess different skills and, therefore, work with different clients. More studies are needed on broader populations to draw conclusions on how the work situation can be optimized for physiotherapists in private and public healthcare.
